Today's episode features returning guest, Austin City Council Member Jimmy Flannigan (District 6). He and A.J. discuss the member's omnibus resolution, Item 91, developed in response to the dual impact of SXSW's cancellation and COVID-19. Set for Council consideration and vote on March 26, the resolution would direct City Manager Spencer Cronk to: (1) Develop programs and consider options to support the small and local businesses and workers impacted by the cancellation of SXSW and the additional subsequent measures taken to address COVID-19; and (2) Authorize the waiver or suspension of resolutions related to programs and policies cited in the resolution as necessary to effectuate this resolution. On today’s episode Bingham Group CEO A.J. speaks with Marissa Patton, Associate Legislative Director, Texas Farm Bureau. Marissa provides an update on the state of Texas’s hemp policy following the passage of HB 1325 (Relating to the production and regulation of hemp) in 2019 during the 86th Texas legislative session. She also details the challenges faced in moving HB 1325 to passage, and what lies ahead in this nascent agricultural sector. UPDATE: Following a rulemaking process, last week (March 16, 2020) the Texas Department of Agriculture opened up a portal for hemp growing license and permit applications process opened online on March 16, 2020. Link below About Marissa Patton Marissa joined the Texas Farms Bureau in August 2013 where she monitors issues and legislation pertaining to eminent domain, agricultural commodities, wildlife, rural affairs, land use authority and appropriations. She was raised in Stamford, Texas, where her family maintains a small farming and ranching operation. She is a graduate of Stamford High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University. Prior to joining Texas Farm Bureau, Marissa worked in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Senator John Cornyn. She also worked in Austin for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA). On today’s episode Bingham Group CEO A.J. speaks with Erica Blue, CEO of The Austin Sunshine Camps (ASC). Founded in 1928 by the Young Men’s Business League of Austin (YMBL), ASC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has opened a world of possibilities to the youth of Central Texas by providing free week-long summer camps to low-income families. Campers must qualify for the Texas public school free and reduced lunch program to be eligible to attend.). Located inside Zilker Park near Barton Springs Pool, ASC, under the supervision of experienced counselors, offers activities such as swimming in Barton Springs or Deep Eddy pool, fishing, canoeing, handicrafts, nature study, hikes, games, and a ropes course with a variety of elements including a team wall, and trust fall. Transportation to camp and three meals a day is included. Campers take home increased confidence and leadership abilities, better problem-solving skills, and friendships that last a lifetime. They learn to resolve conflicts, value diversity, and to share in the success of the group. Fun becomes the foundation on which courage, self-respect, cooperation, and leadership are built. A.J. serves as board Past President of the YMBL and ASC boards, and in 2019 served as President of both. Bingham Group is proud to support the Camps. Lorenz has formed and served as managing general partner of numerous partnerships involved in the development and redevelopment of downtown properties, with a recent emphasis on inner city residential projects. He, with partners, has developed more than 1000 condominium units in mixed use projects throughout Central Austin, including Spring, BartonPlace, Este, The Pedernales, Saltillo Lofts and The Independent.

After running a nonprofit for former Mayor Maynard Jackson, Howard served three years in the administration of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. He spent another five years with DeKalb, Fulton and Jefferson County governments. Howard has led dozens of successful campaigns for leaders like Atlanta City Councilmembers Kwanza Hall and Amir Farokhi, Atlanta Board of Education Chair Jason Esteves, State Senator Jason Carter and Meridian, MS Mayor Percy Bland, DeKalb Solicitor Sherry Boston and Fulton Solicitor Keith Gammage.
