Today's (161) episode features Ed Latson, CEO, Austin Regional Manufacturers Association. Ed and Bingham Group CEO A.J. discuss the recent of the CHIPs and Science Act, and the economic implications for Central Texas. The bipartisan bill includes more than $50 billion in incentives for manufacturers of semiconductors, or chips, to build domestic semiconductor plants. The semiconductor industry has had significant and growing presence in Austin and Central Texas for over 30 years. This includes Samsung's 2021 announcement to build at $17 billion semiconductor factory in Taylor. And recently last month the company filing paperwork with the state suggesting it could build 11 chip-making facilities in the Austin area over the next two decades. According to the U.S. Census, the city grew from a populations of 5,000 in 2000, to just over 52,300 (and growing) in 2020. First elected to Kyle City Council in November 2019, Council Member Ellison was re-elected in November 2019. Located just 30 minutes south of Austin on the booming I-35 corridor, Kyle also sits in Hays County, one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. Elected Mayor in May of 2021, Mayor DeLisle previously served a three-year term as Place 4 on the Leander City Council. Located just 30 minutes northwest of downtown Austin, Leander has experienced substantial growth in its population over the past decade. In May 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Leander, Texas was the fastest-growing large city in America between 2018 and 2019. Today’s episode (154) features Jason Alexander, Chief of Staff to the Austin City Manager. Appointed in January 2022, Jason has a nearly 18‐year career with the City, which in addition to the City Manager’s Office, includes Parks and Recreation, Human Resources, Emergency Medical Services, and the Fire Department. Jason and Bingham Group CEO A.J. discuss his role, a first for City Manager Spencer Cronk (but not new for the city), Jason's path to the public sector and journey to his current role. As Chief of Staff, Jason is responsible for the administrative functions of the City Manager’s Office, and provides leadership and oversight to the City’s Equity, Innovation, Sustainability, and Resilience Offices. Austin operates under a “Council-Manager” system of government. In this model, the Mayor and City Council are responsible for all legislative functions of the City. They appoint a professional City Manager who operates much like a CEO in private-sector businesses and who is tasked with carrying out City Council’s legislative and policy objectives. Today’s episode (152) features Elijah John Bowdre, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Cryptocurrency Task Force. Created in May 2021 (led by the efforts of Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins), the Task Force is comprised of eight industry-expert appointees who shall work to study the possibility of incorporating cryptocurrency as a form of payment for County taxes, fees, and services and other recommendations that may be beneficial to Miami-Dade County.
