"When you think about that perspective of what Asian Americans are experiencing as well as our African American and Hispanic Latino communities are still under-represented. There's progress made in some areas, in some communities, but overall, as a system, we're failing. We're failing our kids and failing those communities that continue to have strong advocates that are supporting kids, but also don't have the shared experience that some people do that come from marginalized communities."

Erika has been an educator for over 20 years, currently serving as the Assistant Superintendent in the Ashland School District. A special educator at heart, she is passionate about supporting all students through individual support to reach their limitless potential. She is excited about her new book, co-authored with Tiffany Burns, Connecting Through Conversation: A Playbook for Talking with Students.

Tiffany loves working with kids. In her two decades in education, she taught elementary, middle, and high school students, and worked as an instructional coach, curriculum writer, and university adjunct instructor in Oregon, Alaska, and Mexico. She loves her current role as an elementary school principal where she gets to lead, learn, and play with her favorite people–kids and their grown-ups.

    • The book every teacher needs to construct day-to-day interactions and conversations to build a culture of connection in our schools.

    • Tools needed in our schools that go against instinct.

"I would encourage all of the Ruckus Makers listening to really focus on how each interaction you have with a student or a fellow educator is serving to build a connected relationship we're learning. Know and give yourself grace. It's not always instinctive or easy. Oftentimes it is really hard. So, prepare, write it down, make a plan. We got into this because we love kids so use your conversations to make sure that they feel that every single day."

Why do students struggle? I'd argue that they lack access to quality instruction, but think about it. That's totally out of their control. What if there was something we could teach kids there was something within their control that would help them be successful in every class? It's not a magic pill or a figment of your imagination.

When students internalize Executive Functioning Skills they succeed.

Ben Jones knew he was going to be a principal when he was in 3rd grade. His entire school career, while a bit tumultuous at times, gave him experiences that helped him become an impassioned educator. After graduating from the University of Georgia in December of 2002, he began teaching at Carson Middle School in Greene County, GA.

After getting married in 2004, Ben and his wife moved to Forsyth County, GA where Ben began teaching at Liberty Middle School. In 2010, Ben became the Graduation Coach at LMS where he supported students, parents, and teachers. In 2012, he had the privilege of being named one of the Assistant Principals at SilverCity ES. 4 years later, he was named AP at South Forsyth Middle School. • The importance of passing the leadership baton.

"'I don't affect anybody else. I don't have any power over anything. My actions don't matter.' That couldn't be farther from the truth. We're all connected in some way to our kids, our staff, our community. Every choice we make, every time we show love and kindness, every time we show respect, every time we're selfless, every time we serve, it means something."
