    The Barbless.co Fly Fishing Podcast

Join Hogan Brown and Chad Alderson for honest conversations about fly fishing, the people who shape it, and what keeps us coming back to the water.

The Barbless.co Fly Fishing Podcast brings guides, biologists, conservationists, craftspeople, and fellow anglers together to share what they’ve learned. We get into fish behavior, reading water, tying flies, fisheries, and the decisions that make a difference on the river. Along the way, there are fishing stories, plenty of laughs, and the occasional detour into life beyond the boat ramp.

We’re here to ask better questions, build our skills, and take better care of the fish and places we love. Whether you’re figuring out your first drift or have spent decades guiding others, there’s always more to learn.

    Know better. Fish better.

Father and Son's Fly Angling and Business Ventures - Kelcey, Hunter and Mason Derrick Feb 12, 2018
    Show notes

Kelcey, Hunter and Mason Derrick represent two generations of fly fishermen, and make up three fifths of the local fly tying cooperative Meat Market Flies. The five-member co-op is a part of a growing movement to support locally made items, and also includes Jason Langstaff from Fish First! Fly Shop and Lukas Ferrenburg as partners. The business started as a way for the three Derricks to save up enough money to be able to afford a drift boat. While the business has just launched, they have already gotten their first major order from a guide who plans to use the flies on a destination trip to Alaska. The flies are primarily for bass, trout and steelhead fishing, but they also do pike and musky flies. Hear about the family’s favorite places to fish, why they choose to only sell streamers, and how they get everyone in their family involved in fly fishing, even their three year old brother. Stay tuned to hear some tips from Mason and Hunter on how to get kids like themselves involved in the sport, in particular how they think Cast Hope can help. Mason talks about his participation in the Heritage Trout Challenge and how he has already crushed it. Kelcey also weighs in on how he got all of his kids to fall in love with the outdoors. Later, Hunter gives some tips for anyone who is hoping to score in the brand ambassador world. To listen to The Nature Conservancy Episode check out episode #17! Department of Water Resources on The Feather River - Senior Environmental Scientist Jason Kindopp Feb 05, 2018
    Show notes

On this episode of The Barbless Fly Fishing Podcast, Chad Alderson and Nick Hanna interview Jason Kindopp, Senior Environmental Scientist for the Department of Water Resources (DWR). Jason works on the Feather River, with his crew of 20’s focus being on the Oroville Dam. After studying biology at California State University, Chico (CSUC) in the 1990’s, Jason got interested in fisheries. Incidentally, he got hooked on fly fishing during this time period. Jason completed his graduate work at CSUC as well, looking at Chinook Salmon populations on the Feather River and Butte Creek. He began a job on the Feather River working with Salmonids while writing his thesis. In Jason’s current role, his job is to monitor health of the river with the health of salmonids in mind. The crew changes flows in ways that are beneficial to the system and the fish, and figure out the operations side of things. The department is constantly learning about hatcheries, and modify their methods based on the data. Hear how Auto fish tagging trailers have transformed the way fish data is collected. Dirty Jobs-DWR-Episode on Amazon, Season 2 episode 6. Newsletter that talked about the episode (page 24). Listen up for Jason’s perspective on how spawning behavior has changed over the last 10 years, the ways that hatchery strategies have changed over time, and of course the striper debate. Jason also gives some food for thought on different areas that could be explored as fisheries. Stay tuned for some fun tidbits, like how you can tell a Fish’s age by their ear bones. An Introduction to NOAA - Biologist Monica Gutierrez Jan 22, 2018
    Show notes

Monica Gutierrez is a Fisheries Biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), which is a branch of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). Her work is focused on San Joaquin River Basin. Born and raised in Woodland, CA, Monica has always been interested in helping animals. She thought she would become a vet, but decided conservation and sustainability was just as important to her as the animals themselves, so NOAA was a perfect career path. She studied fish and wildlife biology during her undergrad. Monica interned at NMFS during college, and has now worked there for about 10 years. NOAA is a part of the Department of Commerce. NOAA, while most well-known for the National Weather Service (NWS), is actually an umbrella agency, with various branches relating to climate, the ocean, weather and coast. NMFS is a branch under NOAA. NMFS is responsible for ocean resources and habitat. Monica uses data to influence policy and make decisions, but does not often do field work. Much of the work that NMFS does helps us with endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Hear more about Monica’s background, details about the Endangered Species Act (ESA) including which fish species in California are listed, and what other NMFS offices accomplish. Also hear about some of the more notable projects Monica’s office has worked on including Fish screen projects. Monica explains the different types of screens out there, including cone and drum screens. An example- GCID project from early 2000’s. Monica also talks about other restoration projects she is working on and how recovery plans work. Of course, Chad and Nick had to ask Monica’s thoughts on Striper. Hear a biologist’s perspective on this controversial issue. More info from NMFS: West coast region website westcoast.fisheries.noaa.gov

On this episode of the Barbless Fly Fishing Podcast, join Nick and Chad as they interview Chuck Ragan and Hogan Brown, best buds who spend their time guiding, playing music, and giving back to the community through Cast Hope. Chuck Ragan is a singer and songwriter, who plays solo and in the band Hot Water Music. Fly fishing has been a massive part of Chuck’s life as long as he can remember; his father moved them around a lot at an early age since he was a pro golfer. Coincidentally, most of the places Chuck’s family moved to were prime fishing spots. Because of this, Chuck was pleasantly surprised with the fishing scene when he moved to Northern California. Hear the funny story about how Chuck and Hogan met, and judge for yourself whether one of our hosts is to thank. Stay tuned for a few tips that these busy guys follow to balance all of their commitments. In particular, life will be out of balance at various times - find a way to get it back to balance. If you have the desire to pull, you will always bring it back to the center. Learn the story of how Cast Hope was the main driving force that got Chuck into guiding. He plans to use it as a retirement plan, since it is tough, yet rewarding. Hogan encouraged him, and showed him Cast Hope. Chuck related with the organization, fell in love with the whole idea of it. Steven Fry is a fly fishing guide based out of the Redding Fly Shop. Steve’s guiding career started with a buddy of his, who was a pig hunting guide. Inspired, Steven started off as a hunting guide himself. After awhile, his guiding repertoire expanded to include fly fishing, where he landed at the Redding Fly Shop. He quotes Nick Fasiano, “if you guide in the Redding area, you are going to end up at the Redding Fly Shop”. Steven definitely paid his dues, he started working receiving in the shop, and is now on their full-time guide staff. Hear about Steven’s experience on the Lower Sac, favorite season on the Upper Sac, and his favorite flies to tie. Listen as the guys discuss all of the changes they have observed due to the flooding last year. Also hear the hilarious story of how Chad and Steven met. Yuba River Fly Fishing - Guide Jon Baiocchi Jan 04, 2018
    Show notes

Jon Baiocchi has been fly fishing and tying flies since 1972. Jon is an experienced guide, author, blogger and award winning public speaker. He was born in San Jose and raised in Paradise, CA. Reminisce with Jon about his home waters back in the 70’s, which he considers the glory days of fly fishing for the area. Jon answers questions about whether Deer Creek really had better fish, and the presence/absence and general quality of fish such as brook trout and salmon. Jon gives some great advice for bloggers starting off in the fly fishing space. Listen up to hear his top 4 pieces of advice for guides wanting to create their own blog. Chad, Nick and Jon have some serious discussion about Czech style nymphing (also known as Northern California high sticking, among other names), including talking about whether this is a trend. This discussion is partly inspired by Jon’s article recommendation, which he calls The Last Word on High Stick Nymphing on his blog. Chad also brings up the Truckee fly fishing festival presentation with Doug Oullete (episode 20), which was a demo on high sticking, which talked about the differences between different short lining techniques and the nuances of presentation. Jon later talks about the changes he has observed along the Yuba River, from under the Highway 20 bridge downstream to the UC Davis campus, upstream past sycamore ranch campground. Water has changed so much that his favorite spots are now gone. On the flipside, there are new areas to fish now. Look out for Jon’s article coming out about the “Newba” River. He will Compare the river before and after major floods, with the changes he observed during high water and everyday changes. Hear about the changes Jon suggests need to be made to preserve the river, and how the South Yuba Citizens League is the only organization paying attention to the side channels. If you haven’t yet, read the related article from Chico State - Saving the Salmon. Jon lived in Truckee in the 80’s while he dipped his toes in professional Snowboarding. He fished the Truckee river in his spare time. There were not a lot of people there yet, and he did not even fish the Little Truckee or Glennshire then. Hear Jon’s favorite time of year guiding in Truckee at the moment, depending on client needs and preferences. For further reminiscing, listen to the changes Jon has observed at Lake Davis and Frenchman’s Reservoir in Plumas County. Also hear the history of Lake Davis, including the controversy with Northern Pike. If all of the stories were not enough for you, make sure you give Jon’s Tribute to Jay Fair a read. Lost a lot of habitat, food. Lance’s website- Lance Gray and Company (Willows, CA).
