Episode 41: How Reinforcement Goes Wrong Sep 16, 2019
    Show notes

Reinforcement is a term that's thrown around a lot however it's commonly misunderstood and misused. Reinforcement is something that comes after a behavior that causes an increase in the probability of that behavior happening again in the future. There are two big warnings signs I see when I think, "This isn't actually reinforcement." When I am told a "reinforcer" doesn't work or when I see a "reinforcer" used before a positive behavior occurs (in hopes that it will), I know this is reinforcement gone wrong.

In this episode, let's explore how reinforcement goes wrong and what you can do to make sure it doesn't with your learners. I absolutely love talking about reinforcement because it's what makes everything work in our classrooms - academics, behavior plans, social skills - it all starts with that ever-important reinforcer!

Episode 40: ABA Myth Busters - Interview with Tameika Meadows Sep 09, 2019
    Show notes

There are plenty of misconceptions and myths about Applied Behavior Analysis. In this episode, Tameika Meadows, BCBA and I are on a mission to debunk the myths. We discuss some situations where something may be identified as ABA but in reality it is not aligned with the best practices and principles of our field.

Tameika and I discuss the misconceptions that ABA teaches robotic skills, doesn’t take into account client preferences, and is working to erase autism. Tameika pulls from her valuable experience in the field as we highlight the BACB’s ethical guidelines that emphasize how Applied Behavior Analysis works to teach socially significant behavior that benefits the learner’s quality of life.

We cover a lot of ground in this episode! We dive into how to select an ABA company, what red flags you be aware of for poor “ABA” services, and tips for collaborating with BCBAs.

Tameika is the creator of the blog & resource website www.ILoveABA.com, which is accessed daily by thousands of people all over the world. Through her website Ms. Meadows provides simple and practical information, strategies, tips, and proudly disseminates the science of Applied Behavior Analysis.

Tameika is also the author of multiple introductory level Applied Behavior Analysis books, such as: “101 Ways to do ABA”, a resource guide for parents and therapists; “From A to Z: Teaching Skills to Children with Autism”, a resource guide for educators; and “A Manual: Creating an Autism Intervention Program”,a resource guide for practice owners. Ms. Meadows has also published multiple ABA e-Books, exclusively available on Kindle.

Episode 33: Work (Step 6 in the 7 Steps for Setting Up a Stellar Autism Room) Jul 15, 2019
    Show notes

Now let's get to the meat and potatoes of your classroom. When setting up your class, what curriculum and activities do you need to ensure your students are learning? There's no quick and easy answer. The idea of developing a set of materials for your students is overwhelming. You may have students that have an extremely wide range of skills. You are working on potty training and pronouns and everything in between. The general education curriculum may not be appropriate for your class. You have two jobs: special education teacher and curriculum developer (but only one salary).

In this episode, we break down this process. One of our team bloggers, Gina and I discuss how to utilize assessments, your IEP goals, and state standards to prioritize, organize, and develop curriculum for your classroom. So before you start laminating away, take a minute to pause and be thoughtful and purposeful about what you are creating for your students.

Yes - data collection needs its own step in the classroom setup process because it is that important. Data should be the backbone of your classroom. You should embed your data collection system into your classroom setup process. Make it something thoughtful and purposeful not an afterthought.

In this episode, we review best practices and tips for setting up academic and behavior data. For academic data, decide if organization by student or by center is best for your (hint: there’s no wrong answer). Organization is key because you need the time between your student doing a behavior to your pen hitting the data sheet to be minimal. For behavior data, learn more about my top 3 tips: keep it easy, keep it central, and make a team endeavor. Whatever stage you are at in the data collection process, this episode will challenge you to make it more efficient and streamlined.
