Paul Maurice resigns as Winnipeg Jets head coach, NHL Olympic participation on thin ice, Multiple Choice Madness, and more Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

First, Ian and Hailey are joined by The Athletic’s own Murat Ates to talk about Paul Maurice’s surprising resignation as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets and discuss whether this kind of amicable split could become a template for other coaches around the league, what’s next for the Jets with Dave Lowry behind the bench, Mark Scheifele’s defensive lapses, whether an all-Canadian division could make a return or not, and Murat shares a great Paul Maurice anecdote.

Then, Ian and Hailey discuss the NHL’s increasingly unlikely participation in the Olympics as more games get postponed amidst a resurgence of positive COVID-19 tests around the league, if the NHL will make exceptions for players like Alex Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos who still might want to play in Beijing, if now’s the time to let World Junior players take over, how the women’s national teams could be impacted by all of this, and more.

Plus, they close things out with a couple of end-of-year questions in Multiple Choice Madness, including what was hockey’s biggest non-COVID-19 story in 2021 and who earned Villain of the Year honors.

Next, the guys, who were both in attendance at Team USA’s WJC camp, give their initial impressions of the team, and talk about Thomas Bordeleau’s unfortunate exit due to COVID-19, Logan Cooley’s role, Luke Hughes and Jake Sanderson as the real strength of the team on both sides of the puck, the pressure on Drew Commesso to be great in goal, and more.

Plus, to close things out, the guys answer listener questions including if it was a fluke that seemingly more “homer run” franchise players were drafted in the first decade of the 2000s as opposed to the second, Corey’s confidence in Conor Geekie’s NHL projection, the absence of CHL players on Russia’s WJC roster, expectations for Brock Faber at World Juniors, which pro league is best for developing forwards age twenty or older, standouts from Detroit’s “army of Swedish prospects”, which NHL teams will either make or miss the playoffs in the next few years because of their prospect pool, and early picks for WJC All-Stars and leading scorers.

Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks is good for the game. Bill Guerin named GM of Team USA, COVID 19 outbreak in the NHL; again and the Arizona Coyotes pay their bills Dec 14, 2021
    Show notes

Craig Custance and Sean Gentille return with a new The Athletic Hockey Show: the Americans. The boys get set to welcome Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras as their special guest this week, but before they do that, they go in-depth on the comments that John Tortorella made on ESPN on Friday night, on if Zegras' creativity and boss pass is great or bad for the game.

Ducks forward Trevor Zegras joins Sean and Gentille's arch rival, The Athletic Hockey Show Monday co-host and known Canadian, Hailey Salvian. Zegras, fresh off practice and a bunch of media commitments in Anaheim discusses the 'Michigan' pass to Sonny Milano, a play which has been viewed over 50 million times on social media, John Tortorella's analysis of the goal, the bounce back season for the Pacific leading Ducks, his friendship with Jack Hughes and Trevor gives us his scouting report on the US roster for the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Sean and Hailey also dissect the very fluid situation with possibly another COVID-19 outbreak on the brink of taking over the NHL schedule again.

Sean and Craig also address Team USA announcing Bill Guerin being named the General Manager of Team USA at the Olympics, and if players will get cold feet and not go to Beijing with COVID-19 ramping up again. Plus we hit on the Coyotes failure to pay their bills, and where they might play next season and Gary Bettman's proclamation that he has no plans to retire.

Vancouver Canucks feeling the Bruce Boudreau Effect, does the NHL need to redefine “clean hits”?, Matthew Tkachuk vs. Brady Tkachuk and other listener questions, Multiple Choice Madness, and more Dec 13, 2021
    Show notes

First, Ian, Hailey, and guest cohost Dom Luszczyszyn, talk about the weirdest or saddest things to do when on a roadtrip alone, and then discuss whether the Vancouver Canucks can make the playoffs with the “Bruce Boudreau Effect” in full effect, the Minnesota Wild and Nashville Predators sitting 1-2 in the Central division standings, where things have gone wrong for the New York Islanders so far, if there needs to be a change in checking rules after a few huge, technically clean hits resulted in bad injuries over the last week or so, how Dom and Sean Gentille create their power rankings, and more.

Then, the group answers listener questions including if the Anaheim Ducks are for real, whether Matthew or Brady Tkachuk is the better player right now, and if the Ottawa Senators top line can turn into one of the best in the league, biggest national team snubs, and favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors.

Plus, to close things out, Ian, Hailey, and Dom run through a series of Multiple Choice Madness questions about which John Tortorella comment from his time at ESPN so far was most bothersome, if the 8 current Eastern Conference playoff teams are locks to make the playoffs, and if the group will give Bobby Orr a follow on Twitter after the NHL legend joined social media over the weekend.

Then, the guys deep dive into Corey’s terrific A1 feature on future NHL star Matvei Michkov and discuss just how dangerous a player he could be, how his recent 5-year contract extension with SKA Saint Petersburg complicates his draft position in 2023 and beyond, and much more.

Plus, Corey’s dispatch from the 2021 Capital City Challenge including thoughts on Calum Ritchie, Zach Benson, Brayden Yager, and Matthew Wood, as well as 2022 NHL Draft eligibles Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie.

And, to close things out, the guys answer listener questions about when a draft pick is the most valuable as a trade asset, what Matvei Michkov would have to do to go No. 1 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, if Cole Perfetti would benefit from attending World Juniors, and whether Owen Power or Jake Sanderson will have the biggest impact in the NHL.
