The Lot of Fortune and Spirit in Astrology Jan 26, 2024

Show notes

In episode 433 astrologers Chris Brennan and Kira Ryberg give an introduction to the the mathematical points in astrology known as lots or Arabic parts, focusing on the two most important lots called the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit. During the course of the episode we explore the history, philosophy, and calculations behind lots, and also analyze some example charts to help bring the concept to life. Here are some key points we discuss in the episode: Introduction to Lots/Arabic Parts: We start by defining lots as mathematical points that mark zodiacal signs with specific topics, similar to how houses in astrology work. Historical Origins: The lots originated as an alternative method to assign significations to the houses, with the Lot of Fortune being the oldest and most widespread. Calculating Lots: We emphasize the importance of understanding the geometric nature of lot calculations, which involve measuring distances between celestial bodies and the Ascendant. Philosophical Underpinnings: The concept of lots is deeply rooted in ancient practices of cleromancy, and we discuss the philosophical dialogue of Plato's "Myth of Ur" to better understand the underlying concepts of fate, chance, and the role of a guardian spirit or daimon. Lot of Fortune vs. Lot of Spirit: We distinguish between the Lot of Fortune, which is associated with the body and material circumstances, and the Lot of Spirit, which is linked to the soul, intellect, and actions. Personal Significance: Lots are highly personal points that offer a unique lens on an individual's chart, revealing aspects of personality and decision-making processes that might not be evident through other astrological factors. Throughout the episode, we stress the significance of lots in providing a nuanced and enriched understanding of an astrological chart. By combining historical context, philosophical insights, and practical examples, we aim to equip listeners with the knowledge to appreciate and utilize lots in their astrological practice. Episode 427 features a conversation between astrologers Madeline DeCotes and Chris Brennan about astrology and death, where we discuss the relevance of astrology in understanding and dealing with issues surrounding mortality, as well as related topics such as how astrologers cope with grief and loss. We open by addressing the question of whether astrology can speak to the topic of death, and talk about some of the different ways that it can, both by looking at a person's birth chart and the charts of people who are close to them. Eventually the conversation delves into the complexities of interpreting astrological indicators of death, as well as the need for caution, sensitivity, and ethics when discussing such topics. The episode is meant to provide a broad exploration of the topic of astrology and mortality, highlighting the ways in which astrology can offer insights into the experience of death and the grieving process, and this lays a foundation for doing more detailed treatments of specific subtopics in future episodes. Astrology Chat with Madeline DeCotes Nov 12, 2023

Show notes

In episode 426 astrologer Madeline DeCotes joins Chris in the studio for a wide-ranging discussion about astrology that covers eclipses, fate vs. free will, and the future of astrological research. We open the episode by discussing the intense past month of astrology with eclipses and world events, the significance of eclipses in ancient times, and the origins of astrology. We also explore the broader topic of negative transits, and how tragic events can sometimes lead to positive outcomes or new beginnings. The conversation delves into the nature of transits and how their manifestation may not always be immediately obvious, but can have long-lasting effects on our lives. The discussion also touches on the personalized almanacs created by the Honeycomb Collective, which provide individualized astrological information and transits. Madeline shares her background in communication and information design, and how she aims to make astrology more accessible and digestible through visualizations and simplified data. Later we explore the different approaches and traditions in astrology, and the challenges faced by new students in navigating the vast array of resources available. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking discussion on the implications of astrology and its worldview. We explore the idea that the universe is alive and imbued with meaning and symbolism, contrasting it with the modern scientific view of a dead and meaningless universe. We also touch on the tension between fate and free will, and how astrology can provide comfort and guidance in navigating life's challenges. The conversation ends with a glimpse into the future of astrology research and the potential for innovation in studying personal charts and experiences. Eclipses That Shaped History: Part 2 Nov 08, 2023

Show notes

In episode 425 astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best do a followup episode on the astrology of eclipses that coincided with major events in history, where we share more examples from around the world. We open the episode by reviewing the main discovery that we made in the last episode, which is that 1) important events in history tend to take place around the time of eclipses, and 2) people born near an eclipse tend to have some of the most important events in their lives coincide with eclipses. We also review the operative range or time frame for eclipses, and what we found is that important events tend to take place within around a week of an eclipse, either before or after. After that we review some recent events that coincided with the eclipses that just took place in October 2023, and then move on to talking about eclipses in the history of many different countries around the world, with many examples sent in by listeners of the podcast after the last episode. In this episode we tried to cover more countries and regions that we didn't cover in the last episode, and also add some additional examples we had overlooked in areas we had covered previously. Astrology Forecast November 2023 Oct 27, 2023

Show notes

In episode 424 we give an overview of the monthly astrology forecast for November 2023, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Austin Coppock. At the beginning of the month we are coming off of an intense eclipse season, where a solar eclipse in Libra square Pluto occurred in mid-October, and a lunar eclipse opposite Mercury and Mars is about to happen on October 28. November continues some of the tense themes, with Saturn stationing direct in Pisces at the beginning of the month, then Mars opposing Uranus around the time of the Scorpio New Moon on the 13th, and Mars squaring Saturn around the time of the Gemini Full Moon on the 27th. This month also features a rare Sun-Mars conjunction that goes exact on November 18, which is unique since it is the first exact conjunction in Scorpio in 32 years. On the brighter side, Venus moves into her home sign of Libra on November 8, and forms a sextile with Mercury that goes exact on November 15. We spend the first hour of the episode talking about news and recent events since our last forecast, and then in the second hour we get into the forecast for November.
