The Assembly Call IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show

Following your Hoosiers is always more fun with friends. Come hang out with us after every Indiana basketball game, and every Thursday night, as our team of hosts — Jerod Morris, Andy Bottoms, Ryan Phillips, and Brian “The Coach” Tonsoni dissect every angle of IU basketball, as we’ve been doing since 2011. We are equal parts unabashed fandom and objective analysis, with plenty of laughter along the way. If you’re looking for knee-jerk analysis and hot takes, this is NOT the show for you. But if you want a show that isn’t afraid to critique play while always staying supportive of players, then this is the place for you.

[491] IU-Wisconsin Postgame Show: Romeo Delivers Final Dagger as Hoosiers Survive in Double-OT Feb 27, 2019
    Show notes

On Tuesday night, Indiana took a double-digit lead in the second half, then saw Wisconsin erase it quickly, and ultimately survived through two overtimes -- thanks to a number of timely buckets from Romeo Langford -- to snap a five-game losing streak. After the game, our crew broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.
On the mics: Jerod, Andy, and Ryan
    Among the topics discussed:
    — Why Romeo's final bucket was exactly what we've all been wanting to see from him in clutch situations (and why, at times, that isn't what occurs)
    — The tremendous lift provided off the bench by Race Thompson
    — The curious decision by Archie Miller to pull Rob, Romeo, and Juwan all off the court at the same time, which coincided with Wisconsin's second-half run
    — Questions about some of Indiana's late-game offensive execution ... but also some plaudits for the coaching staff for getting this season turned around post-Minnesota
    — The understated but stellar night from Rob Phinisee
    — What are we to make of this performance from Juwan Morgan?
    And so much more.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.
(Music provided by Bob Thompson -- die-hard Hoosier fan and longtime Assembly Call listener.)

[490] Banner Monday: Mailbag, Big Ten Roundup, and a Repetitive Wisconsin Preview Feb 25, 2019
    Show notes

On this week's edition of Banner Monday, Jerod and Ryan answer your questions, Mike DeCourcy takes us around the Big Ten, and then Jerod offers up a preview of the Wisconsin that will sound a lot like the Purdue and Iowa previews.
    • [3:10] Jerod opens by looking ahead to next season and identifying the one stat that may make the difference in whether Indiana becomes an NCAA Tournament-caliber team again. Then Ryan joins to answer your questions in this week's mailbag, including one about how much long-term damage Archie Miller is doing to his relationship with IU fans during this losing skid.
    • [29:38] Mike DeCourcy stops by to discuss his thoughts on IU's loss to Iowa and provide insight on the rest of the Big Ten -- including the new leader of his power rankings.
    • [57:08] Then Jerod closes with a short preview of the Wisconsin game, which isn't very complicated. If Indiana can do a couple of things they haven't done consistently well, they'll have a good chance to win the game. If not, it is likely to end as so many other games have ended in Big Ten play this season for the Hoosiers.

In today's edition of Banner Morning:
    • What does Indiana need to do to avoid a Wednesday game in the Big Ten Tournament?
    • How bad has the Hoosiers' 3-point shooting been in Big Ten play? THIS bad. (Historically bad.)
    • And happy birthday to five IU legends (of varying degrees), plus a future Hoosier who hopes to one day stand alongside a couple of them in the record books.

[489] IU-Iowa Postgame Show: Hoosiers Play Well, Shoot Poorly, Lose Again Feb 23, 2019
    Show notes

On Friday night, Indiana brought the same intensity and togetherness to Iowa City that they had Tuesday night against Purdue. Unfortunately, the Hoosiers also brought the same shooting and late-game offensive execution; and thus the final result was the same. After the game, our crew broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.
On the mics: Jerod and Ryan
    Among the topics discussed:
    — The play that gave Indiana a six-point lead late ... and what went wrong thereafter for the final result to be a loss.
    — Why the late-game officiating actually mattered in this one.
    — Rob Phinisee's strong performance, and why his absence in overtime may have cost Indiana the game.
    — What Indiana should have done differently on offense late to get better shots.
    — Indiana's excellent 3-point defense all night long ... even on most of those crazy Jordan Bohannon shots late.
    — The importance of Evan Fitzner and Race Thompson in giving Indiana a chance to win.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.

[488] The 7 Reasons Why Indiana Can't Shoot This Season (Again) Feb 22, 2019
    Show notes

This week on Assembly Call Radio, we take a deep dive into the many factors behind Indiana's second straight season of woeful outside shooting. Perhaps more importantly, we gaze ahead to offer some reasons for optimism that the shooting will get better starting next season. And much more.
On the mics: Jerod, Andy, and Ryan
    • [00:28] In Segment One, Jerod delivers his Banner Moment about IU's sterling defense against Purdue, Andy recognizes Juwan Morgan in his opening statement, and Ryan rants about ... something. Then we talk Comfort Option (with new sound drops!) before diving into keys to victory over Iowa.
    • [17:46] In Segment Two, we highlight the seven reasons why this IU program has fielded two straight teams that are among the nation's worst in outside shooting.
    • [36:53] In Segment Three, we look ahead and discuss some reasons for optimism that the shooting will improve moving forward.
    • [46:31] In Segment Four, we answer your questions about the NIT, Race Thompson, and whether Archie's first recruiting class should still be viewed as a foundational class.
And in the bonus time after the outro (52:23), we briefly touch on where IU's talent and experience stacks up against the rest of the Big Ten.
All of that and more -- including new music from our loyal listener Bob Thompson! -- on this week's edition of Assembly Call Radio.

[487] IU-Purdue Postgame Show: Drastic Change in Effort But Same Crushing Final Result Feb 20, 2019
    Show notes

On Tuesday night, Indiana turned in an intense and physical performance, and certainly played their best defensive game of the season. But a sputtering offense fell one score short in a crushing home loss to Purdue. After the game, our crew broke it all down on The Assembly Call IU Postgame Show.
On the mics: Jerod, Andy, and Ryan
    Among the topics discussed:
    — Romeo Langford's terrific overall performance, and why his missed minutes to start the second half were crucial.
    — Why the offensive struggles in this game fall squarely on the coaching.
    — Archie stressed the need for "drastic changes" after the Minnesota game ... did we see them?
    — The outstanding defense of Al Durham, who harassed Carsen Edwards into one of his worst nights of the season.
    — How De'Ron Davis took over the game at a key point in the second half.
    — Why Juwan Morgan took a few too many 3's and didn't get enough good looks in the post.
    — How Indiana, again and again, seems to be on the wrong side of the tough shots and bouncing balls during this losing streak.
    — A few words about the erroneous narrative that the packline defense doesn't defend 3-pointers well.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.
