The Assembly Call IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show

Following your Hoosiers is always more fun with friends. Come hang out with us after every Indiana basketball game, and every Thursday night, as our team of hosts — Jerod Morris, Andy Bottoms, Ryan Phillips, and Brian “The Coach” Tonsoni dissect every angle of IU basketball, as we’ve been doing since 2011. We are equal parts unabashed fandom and objective analysis, with plenty of laughter along the way. If you’re looking for knee-jerk analysis and hot takes, this is NOT the show for you. But if you want a show that isn’t afraid to critique play while always staying supportive of players, then this is the place for you.

IU-UNLV 1987 Rewatch Postgame Show: Hoosiers Outrun the Runnin' Rebels Apr 05, 2020
    Show notes

On Saturday night, we rewatched Indiana defeating UNLV in the 1987 Final Four. While some experts thought Indiana should slow it down against the nation's most explosive offense, Bob Knight and Steve Alford had other ideas.

    — Why the play of the bench was so important to Indiana winning.
    — The many ways in which the concept of Indiana being a "slow it down" team was misguided.

    — And much more.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.

IU-Kent State 2002 Rewatch Postgame Show: A Shooting Performance for the Ages (But How is Coverdale's Ankle?) Mar 30, 2020
    Show notes

On Sunday night, we rewatched Indiana delivering one of the greatest shooting performances in the history of college basketball as Dane Fife, Kyle Hornsby and the Hoosiers made 15-19 from deep in an Elite Eight victory over Kent State. Tom Coverdale played an incredible first half, but then was lost to an ankle injury, which did cast a cloud of concern over the postgame celebration.
On the mics: Jerod, @IUArtifacts, and Scott from Crimson Cast -- and we stay "in character" for the first two segments, as if we just watched the game live in 2002.
    Among the topics discussed:
    — Dane Fife's incredible clutch 3 in the second half and his defense and leadership throughout
    — Why Tom Coverdale's first half performance is one of the best halves of basketball an IU guard has ever played in the NCAA Tournament.
    — The play Jared Jeffries made in the 2nd half that was the best individual basketball play of the night.
    — The understated brilliance of Kyle Hornsby.
    — Kudos to Mike Davis for a well-coached game and a smart offensive gameplan.
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, hand out our game balls, and discussed what aged the best and worst from this game and season. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.

IU-LSU 1992 Postgame Show: Calbert Cheaney Leads Indiana Past Shaq and LSU Mar 23, 2020
    Show notes

On Sunday night, we rewatched the 1992 Round of 32 game between Indiana and LSU. Shaq was the most dominant player on the court, but Indiana was by far the better team. Calbert Cheaney led the way, the rest of the frontcourt made shot after shot, and Damon Bailey hit two huge second half 3s.
After the rewatch, our crew broke down the game in detail.
On the mics: Coach, Ryan, and Scott from Crimson Cast
    Among the topics discussed:
    — Calbert Cheaney's greatness.
    — Indiana's defensive strategy against Shaq, and why it was smart even though Shaq had a dominant statistical line.
    — Indiana's incredibly efficient offense.
    — How Damon Bailey and Jamal Meeks stepped up during an off night for Greg Graham.
    — What aged the best and worst in the 28 years since.
    And so much more ...
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.

IU-Oklahoma 1998 Rewatch Postgame Show: Andrae Patterson Prevents Total Late-Game Collapse Mar 21, 2020
    Show notes

On Friday night, we did our first rewatch of a classic IU NCAA Tournament game -- the 1998 first round battle against Oklahoma.
The Hoosiers led by 19 at one point in the second before collapsing, but they were able to pull out the win in overtime. Without Andrae Patterson's strong play down the stretch, Indiana likely would have lost in the first round for the fourth straight season.
On the mics: Jerod, Andy, and Galen Clavio from Crimson Cast
    Among the topics discussed:
    — Why it was so heartening seeing Andrae Patterson play such a well-rounded game in such a big spot as a senior.
    — The scintillating offensive strengths and frustrating defensive limitations of A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker.
    — Why William Gladness was so valuable as a role player.
    — The depth issues of the 1998 team, and why it was a microcosm of the biggest issue that plagued the final years of the Knight era.
    — What the hell happened to Michael Lewis in the second half?
    — Who is the better play comp for Devonte Green: Recker or Patterson?
We also point out a few meaningful moments you may have missed, go inside the numbers, and hand out our game balls. All of that, and more, on this edition of The Assembly Call.
