We are in the 3rd week of diving deeper into Homemaking Pillar #3, Rhythms & Routines.

We’ve talked about the difference between a rhythm and a routine. We’ve talked about starting our homemaking from a place of rest, and last week we discussed the importance of establishing a rhythm of worship in the home.

Today we are going to tackle the topic of work. How do we create healthy rhythms of work when we live in our place of work? How do we learn to prioritize working on First Things First when we'd rather be doing secondary things?

    NOTES & RESOURCES

Questions to Consider: (Send me a text with your thoughts!)

    • How well are you attending to First Things first in your homemaking?
    • Which areas are most often neglected?
    • How could you better attend to those neglected First Things in a way fitting to your personal values, strengths, talents and resources?

Send me a text about this episode!

In this episode I am chatting with newbie homemaker, Mallori Tinkler. After working a while as a nurse, Mallori came home full time when her daughter was born.

We talk about the challenges of going from 2 incomes to 1 and the importance of a budget that both husband and wife can faithfully participate in.

We discuss unrealistic expectations for postpartum life (based on social media comparison) as well as our tendency to overcorrect one way or the other with the “Just a homemaker” and “superwoman” mentalities.

This is a lovely conversation filled with all the usual stories of Mallori’s influences, strengths & weknesses, wins, fails, and favorite resources.

Hello Homemaker! After a little update on what I was doing last month on my podcast break, I've got a brand new In-the-Trenches Homemaker Portrait for you!

About today's guest, Emily Baxter: She’s a busy homeschool mom of 5, she’s a writer and a lover of all things home and homemaking. Emily has a passion for creating beauty in her home and cultivating a space that is a welcoming and peaceful place to land. WE chat about her life at the edge of an 80 acre forest in upstate New York, including tapping maple trees for sap to make syrup, how bravery in homemaking is skill and what it’s like to be married to a lineman who is called out at all hours, day or night to literally keep the lights on for their community.

Send me a text about this episode!

Welcome to Season 24 and Year 5 of The Art of Home! 🎉

Do you ever wonder why we make a months-long celebration out of the Incarnation of Jesus at Christmas, but barely give a weekend to commemorate His sacrifice and resurrection from the dead at Easter?

What do we do with a holiday that centers around the death and resurrection of our King? How do we integrate that into our homemaking?

Today we are going to tackle how we can cultivate an environment of remembrance and rejoicing during this holiest of weeks by declaring with food, words, candles, music, flowers, fabric---whatever resources you have that He suffered and died for our sins AND that He is risen! He is risen indeed!

It’s spring time and at our house that means lots of birthday celebrations. Whether you have a big family or several birthdays in one season, elaborate celebrations and gifts can quickly turn something meant for joy into a burden and a chore.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good party with themed decor, food, the works, but I don’t feel the need to pull out all the stops with every celebration, especially when my kids were little.

In today’s Monday Motivation, I want to share some of the simple ways we celebrated and continue to celebrate birthdays in our home.

Today’s guest was nominated by her daughter, Sydney, who wrote on the nomination form, "My mom has given her entire life to raising me and my six siblings. Five of us were adopted, many with trauma that needed special attention. She has shown strength and dignity through it all. She is an inspiration to me as I am a brand new homemaker and I believe her wisdom will be a blessing to many others."

I am so thankful that Sydney nominated her mom, Heather Price, who has been keeping a home full time for 30 years with her husband. They have raised 7 and fostered many more and God has refined Heather through all the challenges of adopting traumatized and special needs kids. We talk about God’s faithfulness, the need to stay flexible, and to constantly remember His unchanging character and what He has done in the past.

We cover all the usual ground of expectations, hospitality, fails, wins, and many more aspects of Heather’s homemaking journey over 3 decades.
