The Art of Engaging Small Talk Toolbox Nov 07, 2022
    Show notes

In today’s episode, we cover talking to strangers with AJ and Johnny.

You never know what friend, business partner, or love interest you’ll meet by striking up a conversation with strangers in your daily life, but how do you create engaging conversations with anyone, what two things do you need for great conversations, and how do you make an unforgettable first impression?

    What to Listen For

    • Introduction – 0:00
    • How is technology harming our ability to hold conversations and how do we overcome it?
    • Why is it important to your health and social life to make small talk with strangers?
    • Simple Techniques for Talking to Strangers – 23:16
    • What tips can you use to have fun conversations with strangers?
    • How do you know what to talk about with strangers?
    • How do you give a compliment to a stranger?
    • The Art of Charm Conversation Formula – 37:05
    • What is the formula for great conversations?
    • How do you have a good conversation with anyone?
    • What are the two things you need to have great conversations?
    • Why is vulnerability important in conversations and how can you be vulnerable without being too vulnerable?

Small talk is important because it helps us to get to know other people, learn about new things, and build relationships. It can also help you feel more connected and socialize when you may be feeling lonely or isolated. To know what to talk about with strangers, think about the setting you’re in and try to find a common ground or interest that you share. The formula for great conversations is simple: ask open-ended questions, listen attentively, and then share something personal about yourself. Having a good conversation with anyone is all about being vulnerable and letting your guard down a little bit. Don’t be afraid to share some of your own experiences or feelings, as long as you do so in a way that isn’t overwhelming or off-putting.

    • The Gender Pay Gap is a Parenting Gap – 59:07
    • What is the reason for the gender pay gap?

Masculinity is not a dirty word. It’s time to reclaim it and redefine it for the modern world. We can start by teaching our children what mature masculinity looks like, modeling healthy behavior ourselves, and creating spaces where men can gather to discuss these issues. Together we can shift the paradigm of toxic masculinity and work towards a more inclusive society that celebrates all forms of masculinity.

    • What can you do to give great feedback people will listen to?

Leaders are not born but they are made. You can become a better leader by taking the time to journal your thoughts and experiences from a leadership perspective. This will help you develop an understanding for what motivates you and how you can motivate others. When it comes to giving feedback, make sure that you take the time to understand the person’s perspective before offering any criticism. Feedback is most effective when it is specific, actionable, and positive.

3 Ingredients to Build Empathy and Foster Deep Relationships | Geoffrey Cohen Sep 05, 2022
    Show notes

In today’s episode, we cover the concept of belonging with Geoffrey Cohen. Cohen is the James G. March Professor of Organizational Studies in Education and Business, professor of psychology and, by courtesy, at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, and the author of Belonging: The Science of Creating Connection and Bridging Divides.

Humans are social creatures and our health is tied to our social bonds, so what happens when we lose the sense of belonging, what can you do to improve your ability to foster that connection with others, and how do you develop the empathy necessary to connect with people from all walks of life?

    What to Listen For

    • Introduction – 0:00
    • What does it mean to belong and what happens to us when we don’t feel a sense of belonging?
    • Situation Crafting – 20:48
    • What is situation crafting and how can you leverage it to accomplish your goals?
    • What simple tricks can you use to accelerate your progress toward changing or improving your behavior?

    • How to connect with people across different beliefs – 45:10
    • What obstacles get in the way of connecting with people who have different beliefs than your own?
    • How do you develop empathy for cultures or belief systems you have no experience with?

We all want to feel like we belong, that we are a part of something larger than ourselves. When we don’t have that sense of belonging, it can be damaging both mentally and emotionally. But what if there were ways to create a sense of belonging for yourself? What if you could use the power of situation crafting to your advantage? There are simple tricks you can use to get started on this journey and develop empathy for cultures or belief systems that are new to you. The bottom line is that developing a sense of belonging is crucial to our well-being as humans. With the right tools and information, you can find belonging in even the most difficult situations.
