A Deep Dive Into Wildland Firefighter Culture with Matt Carroll and Jody Jahn, PhD Sep 26, 2022
    Show notes

Wildland firefighters are a unique bunch... Especially when it comes to the culture, and how we interact with "outsiders", our mission, and with each other...

That's why we have Matt Carroll and Jody Jahn on the show today to talk, more in depth, about the "Deep Dive" project by the USFS and how it can reveal some insights about why we make the decisions that we do...

About Matt: "Matt Carroll works as an Organizational Learning Ambassador with the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station’s Office of Innovation and Organizational Learning (IOL). His focus is on piloting forward-looking learning projects in and beyond the physical safety realm using the practices and philosophies developed in the Facilitated Learning Analysis (FLA) process. Currently he is imbedded with the Forest Service’s Work Environment and Performance Office (WEPO) to build capacity for learning in the anti-harassment program.

Prior to his role as a Learning Ambassador, he worked for three years at Acadia National Park as the Interagency Zone, Assistant Fire Management Officer (AFMO) for the North Country Interagency Fire Program, responsible for the 37 U.S. Fish and Wildlife and 22 National Park units within the 6 New England states.

Over half of Matt’s career was spent as a primary wildland firefighter. He began in 2000 working on the Baker River Interagency Hotshot Crew out of western Washington. He then spent 11 years as a Smokejumper with the McCall Smokejumpers based out of Idaho. Concurrent with his time as a firefighter he took on a number of detail assignments including to the Wilderness and Wild and Scenic Rivers program at the Washington Office, as the R4 Fire and Aviation Management Diversity Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator (FAMDORC), on an R5 team developing a region-wide assessment to inform forest level plan revisions, and with the Forest Service’s International Program (IP) in Brazil and
Peru to develop methods and curricula for teaching wildland fire suppression and chainsaw safety to a wide range of local actors including settlers, indigenous communities and ranchers.

Matt’s academic background is a mix of biophysical and social science at community centered schools with interdisciplinary curricula including an Associate’s degree from Paul Smith’s College, a Bachelor of Arts from College of the Atlantic and a Master’s of Forestry from Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies."

About Jody Jahn (Researcher, CU Boulder): " Jody Jahn, PhD: Jody is an associate professor of Organizational Communication at University of Colorado Boulder. Her research looks at how wildland firefighters learn about hazards through integrating codified knowledge (e.g., 10 & 18, safety documents) with their embodied experience. This research program builds from 8 seasons of wildland firefighting and two seasons of work in Antarctica.

Both of these folks are some heavy hitters on why we make the decisions that we do on the line... And they are determined to make it a safer, more efficient, and more inclusive environment for future generations of wildland firefighters.

Science, Education, And "Life With Fire" With Amanda Monthei Sep 19, 2022
    Show notes

Today on the show: Former wildland firefighter, Amanda Monthei, stops by to discuss her wildfire podcast with a podcaster and former wildland firefighter, who podcasts about wildfire...

Its like inception, but with wildland fire podcasts? 🤣

But seriously, a lot has changed in the last three and a half years since Amanda was last on the Anchor Point Podcast - And she has changed the game in regard to the availability of science based, educational, and easily understood information of why wildfire is rapidly evolving...

Here's a little more about Amanda, with a little insight into her sense of humor (PS - She wrote this bio):

"Amanda is a washed up hotshot who lives in Bellingham, WA. In a (thus far unsuccessful) attempt to replicate the glory of working in fire, she now spends a lot of time avoiding reality and cell service in the backcountry. She also enjoys catching tiny fish, playing banjo badly, writing about fire and making a podcast about, you guessed it, fire. It’s called Life with Fire, you should listen to it."

Although she doesn't like taking praise for her work with the "Life With Fire Podcast" - She is widely recognized as a pioneer in the realm of asking the difficult questions about fire; and having subject matter experts, academics, and professionals of wildland fire explain them in a very digestible way...

"From: Drop Out - To: Tanker Pilot" With Zach Sullivan Sep 06, 2022

That's why we have Zachary Sullivan on the show today - To tell his story of his unique experience of his career path into fire aviation!

"Zachery Sullivan took an unconventional path from being being a wildland firefighter to becoming a tanker pilot. After dropping out of high school, Zachery made a career our of running heavy equipment for various excavation companies in the midwest. In 2003 his career brought him to the Colorado Mountains where he began his introduction to wildland firefighting with a volunteer organization. At age 24 Zachery made a career change from heavy construction to career wildland firefighter in Northern Colorado.

Since making that leap, Zachery has worked for various municipal, county, and federal agencies over the coarse of the last 18 years. In 2020 Zachery turned his interest from fighting fire on the ground, to becoming a Single Engine Air Tanker pilot for CO Fire Aviation. Most recently Zachery completed the National Aerial Supervision Academy and has begun the path of becoming a qualified Air Attack.

When Zachery isn't fighting fire he enjoys spending time with his wife Ruby and their 150 pound English Mastiff Maddie...

Ruby and Zachery can be found at their home in Loveland Colorado or at their property in The Snowy Mountain Range of Wyoming. Zachery is an avid snowmobiler and when the fire season completes; he can be found fly fishing on the Platte River."

Fire Lunches SUCK! - Fire Nutrition With Michelle Yurick Jul 24, 2022
    Show notes

Dialing in your nutrition can be extremely challenging for a tactical athlete, especially for a wildland firefighter during the fire season - The lunches absolutely suck, MRE's are probably nutritionally devoid, and you oftentimes find yourself eating a bunch of gas station food like a raccoon eating out of a dumpster...

That's why we have Michelle Yurick on the show today to talk about nutrition, needed improvements, and some simple life hacks to get more quality in your diet while on the road.

Michelle Yurick is a Dietician, NDTR, and former Zig Zag Hotshot. She currently lives in Ohio and is working for an arborist outfit to keep her saw skills sharp, and keep that outdoor career alive...

Here is a little more about Michelle:

"I'm an adventurer, part-time nomad, former wildland firefighter, registered dietetic technician, current tree-climber-in-training, coffee addict, and occasionally I write things.

I have a B.S. degree - My formal education is in the nutrition field, which has come in handy multiple times, including being a sort of health "guru" throughout several seasons in wildland fire.

I live an unconventional life. I drive a blue VW van with boards, boats, and bikes stacked on top. I've been all over the U.S., calling many different states "home" for short periods of time. I've been north of our borders as well as south, and I've even been across the pond to Africa. The people, along with the different cultures and experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today.

I'm passionate about health and nutrition, holistic wellness, fitness and human performance, protecting and accessing public lands, anything dealing with wildland fire...and finding the best local coffee shops wherever I happen to be..."

AWE And The Smokey Generation With Bethany Hannah Jun 20, 2022
    Show notes

Wildland firefighters tend to be a magnanimous, larger than life, and compassionate crowd... Our stories, legacies, triumphs, and tribulations are oftentimes passed along through a very tribal, and (almost exclusively) verbal means.

That's where The American Wildfire Experience comes in... To catalog and preserve this verbal history through digital storytelling...

The American Wildfire Experience is a nonprofit organization who's roots are deep within the wildland firefighting community. Its primary mission is to support the wildland firefighters, and the communities they serve, by capturing the story of wildfire through digital media...

Today on The Anchor Point Podcast: We get to hear the history of the AWE and The Smokey Generation's start, its purpose, its future projects, and we get to announce the winners of the 2022 Smokey Generation Micro-Grants.

    A little about Bethany:

"Bethany Hannah is the executive director of the American Wildfire Experience and founder of The Smokey Generation. She has been involved in the wildland fire community since 1998 and has a passion for empowering others to take bold action.

The American Wildfire Experience (AWE) is a small non-profit rooted in understanding, examining, and telling the story of wildland fire. Our mission is to support wildland firefighters and the communities they serve."

Congratulations to all of the recipients of the AWE/Smokey Generation Micro-grant award winners this year! I look forward to seeing all of the projects come to fruition, and preserved in a digital space.

Also, I want to say: "The Anchor Point Podcast would like to thank the AWE, it's board members, and Bethany Hannah for the honor of being awarded the 'AWE 2022 Ralph Langlois Impact Award' for mental health focus... This is a huge honor, and my gratitude is beyond measure!

In honor of the people that, both past and present, lived and breathed the hardships of fighting wildland fire - I would like to dedicate this award to the people that struggle, or have struggled, with mental health challenges and the darkness that you may have experienced... I especially wish to honor and dedicate this award to the friends, mentors, and fire family that are no longer with us.

For everyone out there: Always know that there are many peaks and valleys in our journey of life... And as my good friend, Ben Strahan, has said before: 'The valleys are a dark and low place... But, what's the strange beauty of the dark and lowly valley's of our lives? Well, the only place we can look from there, is up'.

In acceptance of this award - I will be donating the full amount of the grant back to the AWE so that someone else may be able to build upon the foundation of this project that preserves the legacy, and tells the story, of the many wildland firefighters across the globe who go unrecognized in their efforts..."

    You know the drill...

    Stay safe, stay savage...

    Enjoy!
