There’s A Right And Wrong Way To Celebrate Juneteenth | EPISODE 133 Jun 14, 2023
    Show notes

On June 13, 2023, Illinois became the first state to ban book bans. The new law, which was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker, makes it illegal for school districts to remove books from their libraries simply because they are considered to be controversial or offensive.

The law was passed in response to a growing trend of book bans across the country. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of school districts removing books from their libraries, often at the urging of parents who object to the books' content. The new law in Illinois is an attempt to protect the first amendment rights of students and to ensure that they have access to a wide range of viewpoints.

On June 14, 2023, Anita Baker announced that she was removing Babyface from her upcoming tour. The two singers were scheduled to co-headline a tour in support of their new albums, but Baker said that she had made the decision to remove Babyface after he made "insensitive" comments about her weight.

In an interview with Essence magazine, babyface said that he had made the comments in jest, but that he understood why Baker was upset. He apologized for his comments and said that he hoped that Baker would reconsider her decision to remove him from the tour.

On June 15, 2023, Tyler Perry announced that he was buying BET. The deal, which is reportedly worth $2.5 Billion, will make Perry the sole owner of the network.

Perry said that he bought BET because he wanted to "give a voice to the voiceless" and to "create a platform for black excellence." he also said that he wanted to make bet more relevant to the current generation of Black viewers.

The deal is expected to close in early 2024.

    Don't Be Good Be Great! | EPISODE 131 Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

Donald Trump has been indicted on seven counts of felony obstruction of justice and two counts of making false statements to Congress. The charges stem from Trump's attempts to obstruct the Special Counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
DC Young Fly gave a very heartfelt speech at the funeral of his “partner” Jacky Oh. Jacky Oh was a close friend and collaborator of DC Young Fly, and his death was a major loss for the comedy community. DC Young Fly's speech was a moving tribute to his friend, and it showed the deep love and respect that he had for Jacky Oh.

Prosecutors are seeking a 13-year prison sentence for rapper Tory Lanez, who was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot last year. Lanez was found guilty of one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. Prosecutors argued that Lanez's actions were reckless and dangerous, and that he should be held accountable for the injuries he caused Megan Thee Stallion.

The Supreme Court has blocked a new Alabama law that would have made it more difficult for Black voters to cast ballots. The law would have required voters to show photo ID at the polls, and it would have eliminated same-day registration and early voting. The Supreme Court ruled that the law would have disproportionately impacted Black voters, and that it violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Amanda Seales discusses these and other topics on her latest episode of The Amanda Seales Show. She is a funny, intelligent, and engaging host who always has something interesting to say. Tune in for a laugh, a learning experience, and a dose of inspiration.

    Show notes

The town of Nutbush, Tennessee, is preparing to build a statue in honor of Tina Turner. The statue will be located in the town square and is expected to be completed in early 2024. Turner was born in Nutbush in 1939 and grew up there until she was 16 years old. She is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and actress who has sold over 200 million records worldwide.

Ralph Yarl, the 17-year-old boy who was shot by a 84 year old man outside of his home in January, is showing signs of progress. Yarl attended a fundraiser for brain injury resources on May 28 and was able to speak to the crowd. He is still recovering from his injuries, but he is making progress.

A 28-year-old woman named Dr. Eli Joseph has become the youngest black professor to simultaneously teach at Columbia University, New York university, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Howard University will be hosting a girls’ lacrosse camp this summer thanks to a donation from Nike. The camp will be free for all girls who attend and will be led by current and former Howard lacrosse players. The camp is part of Nike’s breaking barriers initiative, which is designed to empower girls and women through sports.

In addition to these topics, Amanda Seales also discussed a variety of other topics on her podcast, including the importance of self-care, the need for more diversity in Hollywood, and the challenges of being a Black woman in America.
