#340 Apologetics Isn't a Dirty Word: What Everyone Gets Wrong, with Douglas Groothuis Nov 02, 2025

Show notes

Today I’m joined by philosopher and veteran apologist Dr. Douglas Groothuis to tackle the biggest misconceptions about Christian apologetics—what it is (and isn’t), why it matters for evangelism and discipleship, and how to respond when critics dismiss apologetics as mere talking points. We unpack methods (classical/evidential vs. presuppositional), the role of evidence and story, why humility and love are non-negotiable, and how everyday Christians can give reasons for the hope within them with both gentleness and respect.

Along the way, I share updates: a new Unshaken Faith episode where Natasha and I review Jen Hatmaker’s Awake, the release of my Another Gospel?—Student Edition (with new discussion questions and side notes), and details on our final Unshaken Conference of the year in the Dallas area on November 8.

#339 The Dark Side of Deliverance: Pagan Roots and Spiritual Abuse, with Anna Kitko Oct 30, 2025

Show notes

In today's conversation, Alisa Childers is joined by Anna Kitko—a researcher and clinical expert on spiritual abuse—to unpack the historical, biblical, and psychological roots of deliverance ministry. Together they explore how many of today’s practices trace back not to Scripture, but to ancient pagan rituals, and how that can lead to deep spiritual and emotional harm for sincere Christians seeking help.

Drawing from her research into ancient Akkadian medicine, Second Temple Judaism, and modern charismatic movements, Anna explains that Jesus’ exorcisms were unique precisely because only Yahweh Himself could command evil spirits.

Alisa and Anna also discuss:

The four ancient categories of “demons” and what they reveal about how we understand possession

Why much of deliverance ministry functions like spiritualized mental-health care—without accountability or clinical ethics

The concept of iatrogenic harm (when “healing” practices actually wound people)

How Bethlehem’s “SOZO” prayer model parallels ancient pagan rituals and can lead to spiritual abuse

What true, biblical deliverance and spiritual warfare look like—prayer, truth, and faithfulness under Christ’s authority alone

This episode is a sober but deeply encouraging reminder: Christians are delivered when they trust in Christ and are delivered from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God.

#338 The Discreditation Machine: 6 Manipulative Tactics to Silence Truth, with Megan Basham Oct 26, 2025

Show notes

When journalist and author Megan Basham released her book Shepherds for Sale, the evidence she uncovered should have sparked healthy reform and accountability within evangelical institutions. Instead, she watched the entire “Big Evangelical” infrastructure mobilize—using back-room tactics, social pressure, and selective outrage—to discredit her and convince pastors not to read her work.

In this deeply revealing conversation, Alisa Childers and Megan expose the six manipulative tactics that often appear when someone dares to speak truth that challenges powerful networks within the church:

1. Prediscreditation – discrediting before you speak.

2. Moralizing dismissal ("Not our thing, Dear!")

3. Shunning and platform pressure.

4. Seizing on minor errors to discredit the whole.

5. Emotional outrage and tone policing.

6. Misusing Matthew 18 to silence public critique.

Megan also shares a personal update on her battle with stage 3 colon cancer, how God sustained her through the storm, and why she continues to stand firm for truth despite enormous backlash.

Whether you’ve faced rejection for speaking biblical truth in your own church or just want to understand how the “discreditation machine” operates, this episode will equip you to stand firm with courage and biblical clarity.

#337 Dominionism, Third-Way, and the Christian Right: A Friendly Debate, with Jesse Westwood Oct 19, 2025

Show notes

Is deeper political engagement faithfulness—or a fast track to compromise? In this candid conversation, Alisa and Jesse Westwood (Faith Reframed) wrestle with Christian political involvement in the wake of recent events, the rise of Christian nationalism, and the stealthy influence of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).

From Jesse’s Anabaptist “two-kingdom” convictions to Alisa’s case for principled engagement, you’ll hear vigorous disagreement—and real agreement—on essentials: the sufficiency of Scripture, the danger of dominionism (NAR’s “Seven Mountain Mandate”), and why bad theology hurts people. They also distinguish classic postmillennialism from dominionist projects, talk early-church witness, co-belligerence, and why placing political victory over biblical doctrine is a dead end.

#336 John Cooper Goes Off on Third-Waysim: Is the West Worth Saving? Oct 16, 2025

Show notes

After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a lot of masks slipped. In this no-fluff conversation, Alisa sits down with John Cooper (Skillet) to unpack why so many Christian leaders waffle, what “third-wayism” really is, and how subtle, academic-sounding concepts like standpoint epistemology are eroding biblical authority and Western civilization itself.

They trace the ideas, test them against Scripture, and tackle hard questions: Is “neutrality” real? Why does third-wayism always drift left on abortion and justice? How should pastors lead without playing “footsy-cakes” with the culture? Plus: a practical framework for discernment (fear of God over fear of man), why many “normies” are done outsourcing their thinking to evangelical elites, and a hopeful look at what God is doing in this cultural moment.

#335 The Progressive Poison Spreading Through Christian Colleges, with Dr. Everett Piper Oct 09, 2025

Show notes

Are Christian colleges quietly leading the church into deconstruction? In this hard-hitting episode, Alisa sits down with Dr. Everett Piper, former president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University and host of The Rebellion, to unpack how small compromises in the academy become cultural contagions in the church.

Piper traces the pipeline from CCCU “deconstruct your faith” freshman rhetoric to campus policies that smuggle in progressive ideology on sexuality, identity, and “tolerance.”

Alisa also answers a question she’s been getting a lot: Why she can no longer recommend Biola University to Christian parents. She walks through language in Biola’s public statements on sex and gender, concerns about chapel speakers and student life, and why “mission drift” accelerates unless leaders act decisively.

#334 Why Political and cultural Engagement Is Not a social Gospel, with Frank Turek Oct 05, 2025

Show notes

In this episode, Alisa Childers welcomes Frank Turek for a wide-ranging conversation about Christian political engagement, 3rd wayism, and the difference between faithful involvement and a political gospel.

We reflect on the dangers of Christians retreating into neutrality under the guise of “3rd wayism,” and address the misconception that political engagement is the same as preaching a political or social gospel. Frank also shares about his brand-new children’s book on responsibility, offering insights into raising the next generation with wisdom and discernment.

Finally, Frank opens up about how he’s doing in the wake of Charlie’s murder, giving listeners a glimpse into both his heart and his hope during this difficult season.

#333 3rd Wayism vs. NAR: Opposite Errors Threatening the Church, with Jon Root Oct 01, 2025

Show notes

In this episode, Alisa Childers sits down with Jon Root to examine two opposite but equally dangerous influences in the church today: the “3rd way” approach that seeks to keep Christians silent on politics, and the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) with its unbiblical approach to political domination.

Together, we explore why Christians must remain both doctrinally grounded and civically engaged—without allowing politics to overshadow the gospel. The conversation highlights how deceptions today are becoming increasingly sophisticated, requiring deep biblical discernment.

We also interact with a popular podcast that rightly exposed the dangers of 3rd wayism, but whose speaker unfortunately aligns with figures like Paula White and Benny Hinn. This tension underscores why discernment must go deeper than personalities and rhetoric—it must be anchored in Scripture.

#332 Should Christians Pledge Fraternities and Sororities? with Ty Jones Sep 28, 2025

Show notes

Many Christian students face pressure to join fraternities and sororities on campus, but is Greek life compatible with the Christian worldview? In this episode, @TytusJones joins me to dig into the roots and rituals of Greek organizations, explore their historical ties to Freemasonry, and ask tough questions about whether these practices align with Scripture.

You’ll also hear practical advice for parents and students navigating these decisions—how to evaluate the spiritual implications, what red flags to watch for, and how to choose wisely in a culture that often normalizes compromise.

If you or someone you love is considering Greek life, this conversation will equip you with biblical clarity, historical insight, and practical wisdom.

#331 Revival Is Here — And It’s Going to Be Messy. Thoughts about the Charlie Kirk Memorial Sep 23, 2025

Show notes

In this episode, I share my personal reflections from attending the Charlie Kirk Memorial in person.

I talk about the undeniable realities of what took place: the gospel was proclaimed with boldness and clarity to the whole world. There was strong theology in some moments—and some troubling theology in others. I also open up about my ongoing angst regarding worship music and how I experienced the worship at this event.

Ultimately, I believe we are witnessing a genuine move of God—a real revival. And like the Jesus people revival of the early 70's, it’s probably going to be messy.

Finally, I share a new policy regarding my future speaking events. These changes come from much prayer, counsel, and reflection, and I hope they give you insight into my heart and the direction I believe God is leading.
