    TRANSCRIPT:

the existence the physical universe is

basically playful there is no necessity

for it whatsoever it isn't going

anywhere that is to say it doesn't have

some destination that it ought to arrive

at but but it is best understood by

analogy with music because music as an

art form is essentially playful we say

you play the piano you don't work the

piano why music differs from say travel when you

travel you are trying to get somewhere

one doesn't make the end of a

composition the point of the company of

the composition if that was so the best

conductors would be those who played

fastest and there will be composers who

wrote only finales people go to concert

just do one crashing chord because

that's the end say when dancing you

don't aim at a particular spot in the

room that's where you should arrive the

whole point of the dancing is the

parents now but we don't see that as

something brought by our education into

our everyday conduct we've got a system

of schooling which gives a completely

different impression it's all graded and

what we do is we put the child into the

corridor of this grade system with a

kind of comma on kitty kitty kitty and

yeah I go to kindergarten you know and

that's a great thing because when you

finish that you'll get into first grade

and then come on first grade leads the

second grade and so on and then you get

out of grade school you've got high school

and it's revving up the thing is coming

then you're going to go to college and

by jove then you get into graduate

school and when you're through with

graduate school you go out to join the

world and then you get into some racket

    where you're selling insurance and

they've got that quota to make and

you're going to make that and all the

time this thing is coming it's coming

it's coming that great thing the success

you're working for then when you wake up

one day about 40 years old you say my

god I've arrived I'm there and you don't

feel very different from what you always

felt by expectation look at the people

who live to retire and put those savings

away and then when they 65 they don't

have any energy left they're more or

less impotent and they go and rotten and

old people senior citizens community because we've

simply treated ourselves the whole way

down the line we thought of life by

analogy with a journey with a pilgrimage

which had a serious purpose at the end

the thing was to get to that end success

or whatever it is or maybe heaven after

you're dead but we missed the point the

whole way along it was a musical thing

and you were supposed to sing or to

dance while the music was being played

The Dream Of Life - Alan Watts | A Watts Wisdom Classic Oct 09, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the Alan Watts Audio Experience; an Alan Watts Podcast for fans of one of the greatest philosophical geniuses of all time. Todays Watts Wisdom Classic is titled 'The Dream Of Life' - one of Alan's most listened to and adored clips ever.

    TRANSCRIPT:
    [music plays]

[Alan Watts:] If you awaken from this illusion

and you understand that black implies white

    self implies other

    life implies death

or shall I say death implies life

    you can feel yourself.

Not as a stranger in the world.

Not as something here on probation.

Not as something that has arrived here by fluke.

But you can begin to feel your own existence

    as absolutely fundamental.

    [music plays]

I'm not trying to sell you on this idea

in the sense of converting you to it.

I want you to play with it.

I want you to think of its possiblities.

I'm not trying to prove it

I'm just putting it forward as a possibility of life to think about

    So then...

Let's suppose that you were able every night,

to dream any dream you wanted to dream.

And that you could for example have the power

within one night to dream seventy five years of time.

Or any length of time you wanted to have.

And you would naturally, as you began on this adventure of dreams,

you would fulfill all your wishes.

You would have every kind of pleasure.

    And after several nights

of seventy five years of total pleasure each,

you would say "Well that was pretty great!"

    "But now let's - let's have a surprise".

"Let's have a dream which isn't under control".

"Where something is going to happen to me

but I don't what it's going to be."

    [music plays]

    And you would dig that

And come out of that you'd say

"Wow that was a close shave wasn't it?"

Then you would get more and more adventurous

and you would make further and further gambles

    to what you would dream.

Finally you would dream where you are now.

You would dream the dream of living the life

that you are actually living today.

That would be within the infinite multiplicity

of choices that you would have.

Of playing that you weren't God.

Because the whole nature of the God in you

according to this idea, is to play that he's not.

So in this idea then, everybody is fundamentally

the ultimate reality, not God in a politically kingly sense,

but God in the sense of being the self.

The deep down basics, whatever there is.

    And you're all that.

    Only your pretending your not.

    [music plays]

Falling In Love - Alan Watts | A Watts Wisdom Classic Oct 08, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the Alan Watts Audio Experience; an Alan Watts Podcast for fans of one of the greatest philosophical geniuses of all time. Todays Watts Wisdom Classic is titled 'Falling In Love' - one of Alan's most listened to and adored clips ever.

    TRANSCRIPT:
well now really when we go back then to

falling in love and say it's crazy

falling you see we don't say rising in

to love there is in it the idea of the

fall and it is goes back as a matter of

    fact two extremely fundamental things

that there is always a curious tie at

some point between the fall and the

    creation

taking this ghastly risk is the

condition of their being life you see

for all the life is an act of faith and

    an act of gamble

the moment you take a step you do so on

an act of faith because you don't really

know that the flaw is not going to give

    under your feet

whoever to take a journey what an act of

faith the moment you enter into any kind

    of human undertaking in relationship

what an act of faith see you've given

yourself up but this is the most

powerful thing that can be done

    surrender

see and love is an act of surrender to

    another person

    howdy

    I kept myself

    take away anything you like

    so

that's quite mad because you see it's

letting things get out of control all

    sensible people keeping control

    watchin watchin watchin security

    vigilance

watch it please watch it guards watch it

so actually therefore leading the cause

of wisdom what is really sense is to let

go is to commit oneself to give oneself

up and that's my man so we come to the

strange conclude that in madness lies

The Mind - Alan Watts | A Watts Wisdom Classic Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the Alan Watts Audio Experience; an Alan Watts Podcast for fans of one of the greatest philosophical geniuses of all time. Todays Watts Wisdom Classic is titled 'The Mind' - one of Alan's most listened to and adored clips ever.

    TRANSCRIPT:
so then let's consider first of all what

is a mind in the grip of vicious circles

well one of the most obvious instances

that we all know is the phenomenon of

worry the doctor tells you that you have

to have an operation and that has been

set up so that automatically everybody

worries about it but since worrying

takes away your appetite and your sleep

it's not good for you but you can't stop

    worrying and therefore you get

    additionally worried that you are

    worrying and then furthermore because

that is quite absurd and you're mad at

yourself because you do it you are

worried because you worry because you

work that is a vicious circle

    [Music]

so now can you allow your mind to be

quiet isn't it difficult because the

mind seems to be like a monkey jumping

up and down and jabbering all the time

once you've learned to think you can't

stop and an enormous number of people

devote their lives to keeping their

    minds busy and feel extremely

    uncomfortable with silence when you're

    alone nobody's saying anything there's

nothing to do there's this there's worry

this lack of distraction I'm left alone

with myself and I want to get away from

myself I'm always wanting to get away

from myself is why I go to the movies is

why I read mystery stories that's why I

go after the girls or anything that you

do or get drunk or whatever I don't want

to be with myself I feel queer

so well why do you want to run away from

yourself what's so bad about why do you

want to forget it is why do you want to

become because you are addicted to

    thoughts

    it's a drug we'll take it

positive thinking that on and on and on

    it's a habit so there's a difficulty

about stopping that activity and you

really have to stop it if you want to be

seen because if I talk all the time I

don't hear what anyone else has to say

and I'll end up in the situation of

having nothing to talk about but my own

    daughter

was there an exactly the same way if I

think older I won't have anything to

think about except thoughts so in order

to have something to think about there

are times when you simply must stop

thinking well how do you do that

the first rule is don't try to

because if you do you will be like

someone trying to make rough water

smooth with a flat iron and all that

will do will stir it up so in the same

way as a muddy turbulent pool quiets

itself when left alone you have to know

how to leave your mind alone it will

    quiet itself

The Real You - Alan Watts | A Watts Wisdom Classic Oct 07, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the Alan Watts Audio Experience; an Alan Watts Podcast for fans of one of the greatest philosophical geniuses of all time. Todays Watts Wisdom Classic is titled 'The Real You' - one of Alan's most listened to and adored clips ever.

    TRANSCRIPT:
If you ready to wake up, you gonna wake up

and if you're not ready you're gonna stay pretending that you're just a 'poor little me'.

And since you all here and engaged in this sort of inquiry and listening to this sort of lecture,

I assume that you're all on the process of waking up.

Or else you're teasing yourselves with some kind of flirtation with waking up

    which you're not serious about.

But I assume maybe you are not serious, but sincere

that you are ready to wake up.

So then, when you're in the way of waking up, and finding out who you really are,

what you do is what the whole universe is doing at the place you call here and now.

You are something the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing.

    The real you is not a puppet which life pushes around;

the real, deep down you is the whole universe.

    So then, when you die,

you're not going to have to put up with everlasting non-existence,

    because that's not an experience.

Lot of people are afraid that when they die,

they're gonna be locked up in a dark room forever,

    and sort of undergo that.

But one of the most interesting things in the world - this is a yoga, this is a way of realization

try and imagine what it will be like to go to sleep and never wake up.

    Think about that.

    Children think about that.

It's one of the great wonders of life.

What will it be like to go to sleep and never wake up?

And if you think long enough about that, something will happen to you.

You will find out, among other things,

that it will pose the next question to you.

What was it like to wake up after having never gone to sleep?

That was when you were born.

    You see, you can't have an experience of nothing;

    nature abhors a vacuum.

So after you're dead, the only thing that can happen is the same experience, or the same sort of experience when you were born.

In other words, we all know very well that after people die, other people are born.

And they're all you, only you can only experience one at a time.

Everybody is I, you all know you're you

and wheresoever beings exist throughout all galaxies, it doesn't make any difference.

    You are all of them.

And when they come into being, that's you coming into being.

    You know that very well,

only you don't have to remember the past in the same way you don't have to think about how you work your thyroid gland,

or whatever else it is in your organism.

You don't have to know how to shine the sun. You just do it, like you breath.

Doesn't it really astonish you that you are the fantastically complex thing,

and that you're doing all of this and you never had any education in how to do it?
