Don't Panic - It's most likely spam mail Mar 12, 2019

A new tactic in trying to separate you from your money, or just another iteration of the same old scam. Somehow people really want to take your money online by hacking you, or pretending you hack you. This morning I got a call from an old client who was worried his e-mail had been hacked.

Your best defense against this stuff? Educate yourself more about your email, web services, social media accounts, etc.

Currently I'm in Casa Grande Arizona. I'm staying at one of the parks I'll be working with this week. I decided to sign up for a week with Airbeam for WiFi in the park. Unfortunately, the service doesn't work well at all. Actually, the word I'd use is "unusable."

Where I used to spend my childhood evenings on the lake with family and friends playing board games and card games, today we find folks in front of portable computing devices "gaming." The Abandoned Airstream Jan 11, 2019

Okay, the Airstream isn't abandoned, but I have been feeling some guilt over moving out of it. It's been my home for over a decade. All week long I've come up with excuse after excuse to go and pay it a visit.

I'll adjust, I'm sure. And there will be Airstream trips in 2019. So, looks like I've got to get over feeling bad about exiting the Airstream, and start looking forward to the adventures ahead.

There are many drone job websites out there for Part 107 Drone Pilots. The big question is pretty simple. Can you make money with these websites, or are the client requests undervaluing your work?

The answer? It depends on where you're located I believe. It also depends on whether or not the jobs are located in places way off the grid, or in busy metropolitan areas.

Tech Companies and Customer Care...or lack of care Jan 09, 2019

These days it seems like many tech companies are "getting to big for their britches." Do people still say that? Well, today I have a positive experience to share about the tech company Anker. Great customer support, and confirmation that I will continue being a happy customer.

Sadly, other companies that I have liked over the years are starting to fail when it comes to customer support, honesty in marketing, and getting people to pay for something that is unfinished.

Every time I hear "AI" I fear Skynet Jan 08, 2019

Seriously......Skynet. It's only a matter of time, the machines will take over. Fortunately, if you look at the Artificial Intelligence software today you'll feel secure in the knowledge it's not any time soon.

Companies touting "AI" features aren't really delivering on actual artificial intelligence. Often it's a flimsy marketing technique and nothing more. We'll talk about 2 software developers both offering AI, and the failure to really deliver.

Making a small business website is easy, right? Jan 07, 2019

Here we are back to the regular schedule for the podcast! And we're recording from the new studio room.

So, last week I had a conversation with one of my Udemy students about web building. She realized that my class (Wordpress & X Theme for Beginners) didn't cover big parts of web development. In the class I teach people how to make a website with Wordpress and X Theme. I don't teach creative writing, photography, graphic design, podcasting, video content creation, full Search Engine optimization, and more. There's a lot that goes into building a professionally crafted website, which is why there are so many web developers out there.

It's a big job! And most likely, if you're a small business owner, you've already got a job. So while you can build and maintain your own website, you might just want a professional to help you out. Honestly, I'm glad my student came away realizing she needed to hire a professional designer for her business. It means the class demonstrated there's a lot more to this.

Handholding in the creative process - Are Presets the death of creativity Dec 18, 2018

I've been learning a lot from the feedback of several of my online courses. Some students really want you to walk them through the exact process of website layout. Others want to get information about how to build their websites, and then branch off relying on their own creativity. What type of student are you? Today I'd like to start a regular conversation about creativity, learning, and mirroring the works of others. Many photo editing programs out there now come with "Presets" for photo editing. Drop your photo in, use someone else's developing knowledge, and call your new image a masterpiece. For me, I like learning from others, but then experimenting with my own looks. Which process is right, which is wrong? Is there such a thing as a "correct" photo or painting or website layout? Are we killing creativity and inviting cookie cutter designs from all corners? Everything old is new again! New life for an old Macbook Pro Dec 17, 2018

It's amazing how some things last and last. In technology that's not usually a thing. But when it comes to older Apple products you can really find long lived systems out there. I can't say the same for recent Apple products unfortunately. Last week it was pretty clear to me that my 2013 Macbook Pro was on its last legs. I couldn't even record an audio podcast to it without it saying my disk write speed couldn't keep up.....with audio. Wow! So I made a decision to take a risk and swap out the old hard drive with a new SSD drive. Voila! The old Macbook is now running like a new one again. Just amazing! I wish Apple would do a little self examination, and realize that allowing customers to upgrade their own RAM, hard drive, etc, isn't such a bad thing. I buy Apple products for their OS, not the new slick hardware. But that's just me I suppose. Tech Talk Friday - Honest online reviews Dec 14, 2018

Yes, I missed yesterday's podcast. But that's okay, today's makes up for it I promise. Today's episode is also number 99! One away from one hundred! This morning I watched another overview of Luminar with Libraries from a favorite photographer. And I thought the overview was a little disingenuous. At one point early in the video the photographer said, "Try not to think about the things that it's lacking....." WHAT??? Online reviews and tutorials are great. But keep in mind many of them are sponsored videos. Paid advertisements and often people fail to mention that part during their review. Keep that in mind whenever you're looking for totally honest opinions. Tech Talk Tuesday - Luminar 3 Photo Editor - An audio podcast for a visual program Dec 11, 2018

Can you really do an audio review of a photo editing program? Sure you can. I've been working with Luminar for quite some time now. And as an editor I really enjoy the software. The latest feature which will be available in a few short days is a new Library for Luminar. You can now save your images into Luminar itself, which is a great leap forward. For many people, the hope is that Luminar can become a replacement for Adobe's Lightroom. Today it is not that replacement, but it may become a contender in the next 6 months. At present for my purposes, I'll continue using Lightroom as my photo management platform of choice. And I'll continue using Skylume's Aurora HDR and Luminar 3 as plugins to Lightroom. Do I like Luminar? Yes. Do I think the new version with libraries will assist in my current photo editing workflow? Web Design, Graphic Design, Social Media, & SEO are not all the same thing! Dec 07, 2018

Before getting into today's show notes I want to share an anniversary with you. 45 years ago on December 7th, 1973 my mom underwent the start of her bone marrow transplant. She would have died without it. So on the anniversary of her transplant I wanted to take a moment to remember her and to be thankful that I had her in my life 25 years longer than I was supposed to. For today's show we're talking work in the digital realm. I recently applied for a part time job with a company here in Arizona. They're looking for a Graphic Designer. I am not a graphic designer. So why would I apply for the job? Well, the job description includes website design, Search Engine Optimization, Social Media expertise, photographic expertise..... oh, and some graphic design. I'm not kidding you. The job description encompasses 4 actual full time jobs easily. And they're looking for 1 person part time to do it all. Unrealistic? Yes. But also an opportunity for me to help educate them on what their priorities are, and see if my skill set could fit in with them. Am I hopeful about getting a call back? 50 / 50 really. I might be a little over qualified, and often I've found here in AZ that if you look over qualified you don't even get a phone call back. We'll have to wait and see. Tech Talk Thursday - Solar Power for your new RV Dec 06, 2018

Today's episode was inspired by visiting many RVs yesterday while waiting on my Airstream repair. So many new RVs include solar pre-wire setups. But the question is, are these solar setups good enough to run all the amazing tech inside new RV's? The short answer from my time looking in so many new models is no. If you're shopping for a new RV and plan on camping off grid, get your questions ready for your RV dealership. Be sure to get educated responses to your solar questions. And if you don't get them, do some more up front research before making your purchase decision.

My inbox has been over flowing with special deals. "Only 5 hours left....only 4 hours and 45 minutes left......" You get the idea. I'm thinking that we're going over the top with these emails, and they're actually turning me off to companies that I like! Have Black Friday and Cyber Monday turned you off to companies you like? Are you finding that even after unsubscribing from a company's email list you still get email from them? How much is too much in your mind? How much does it cost to develop an App? Nov 26, 2018

That's the question I was asked yesterday. I always enjoy open ended questions like this. Well, not really. Questions always come to mind. "What does the app do? Do you want it on iOS and Android? Is it an interactive app? Is it a location based app......?" I think you get the idea. But often times people want to jump right to price before specifying what it is they want. "What's the price of a car? What's the price of a new home?" Well, the answer to both of those questions is that it depends on many things. You can get a broken down car on the cheap. You can build a 20 x 20 building with no windows and doors on the cheap. But is that what you really wanted? Probably not. Blowing up Granite and Bending iPads....Fun times, fun times. Nov 19, 2018

A late episode, but an episode all the same. And the news in today's podcast was very interesting to me. First, the Daily Courier (local newspaper) had a story about widening Route 89 through the Granite Dells. Not long ago I posted a video on YouTube about the increase in traffic from north of town and Chino Valley. Full Time RVers and YouTube - Making an income with social media? Nov 08, 2018

Recently I watched a favorite full time RV couple's YouTube video about needing some help from their audience. They were looking for testimonials from viewers to share with potential advertisers. Bottom line? They're trying to earn their full time living with their YouTube channel about living in an RV. Nothing wrong with that. We've all got to earn a living. I wonder though how many viewers actually make buying decisions based on their favorite Full Time RVers. See, a lot of RV channel followers aren't RVers yet. They're dreaming about it, learning about it, and enjoying following along with other people. But they aren't actually in a position to buy RV related items because they're not in an RV. In my case, I'm monetizing this podcast and my YouTube channel by offering classes on things that reach a larger audience. And no, I'm not making a true living at it yet. But hard work, plugging away, and slowly growing are part of my strategy. Tech Talk Tuesday - Oh Apple Nov 06, 2018

Apple's recent event left me a little underwhelmed. The new iPad Pros, the new Mac Mini, and the updated Macbook Air. In the end my response could be summed up in one word. Meh. I've never considered myself a "power user," but I do a lot of things other Apple buyers don't do. I podcast, edit videos, created 3D drone maps, edit photos, and more. So I suppose from that perspective I'm more of a power user than most. And the recent updates to Apple's lineup just aren't crying out to me. Here's hoping by the time I have to replace my current computer Apple will get back on track and start really innovating once again. Drones and your small business Oct 23, 2018

Over the weekend I spent some time flying over a new house for sale in Chino Valley Arizona. I also photographed the new home, and shot additional interior and exterior video as well. In the end? I just landed a new client that will need me to image over 30+ homes in 2019. Fantastic! Today's episode was inspired by the work I did this weekend. Drones are finding many uses in our economy, and the industry will continue to grow over the next few years. Concerns over privacy invasion are over blown in my opinion. Drone pilots have more of an interest in growing their businesses, and invading people's privacy doesn't create a new revenue stream, it only serves to aggravate the public. The cheapest price doesn't mean the best product Oct 22, 2018

Why is it so many business owners go after the lowest bid instead of the best product? I have never heard of a fantastic experience getting the cheapest service. As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." If you're a small business owner, or even a mid-sized business owner I'm sure you've learned offering the lowest price doesn't get you the best client pool. You need to respect your value that you offer, and your clients should also respect the value of the work you do. If it all comes down to the lowest cost solution I have a feeling you won't enjoy working with your client for long. In the case of one App development my friend and potential client ended up spending a lot more than he wanted to because he was focused on a low hourly rate rather than a quality product. Over the past few weeks and months I've found myself having more fun with photography again. The frustrations of photography mounted over the years as I felt undervalued in the industry, which is part of the reason I walked away from the gallery and studio years ago. Too many requests for free advice, too many lookers and not buyers....you get the idea. So I'm thrilled that as I've been assembling new courses on Udemy for Lightroom, Drone Photography, and Landscape photography the joy has come back into my photographic work. So Many Software Updates - Are they all worth it? Oct 18, 2018

The latest version of Adobe's Lightroom Classic has been released. And after checking it out and doing some testing all I have to say is "Meh." Companies are on such aggressive update cycles. A new iPhone comes out and there are already leaks about the next version. A new Note phone comes out and there are already leaks about the next version. It's never ending. And for highly mobile workers living out of RVs, vans, or flights all over the planet these updates do little more than eat up bandwidth and time. Security updates are one thing. But constant software updates that offer little to no new benefits are getting old! Stock Photography and Video - A Full Time RV Travel Revenue Stream? Oct 15, 2018

A few episodes back I talked a little about stock photography and video services, and the fact that I joined up with Blackbox.global. Things have been going well so far, and the exercise reminded me that I might have some more images for stock photography sites as well. Years ago I signed up with Dreamstime (link below), and submitted less than 300 photos. And over the years I've made nearly two thousand dollars off of those images. That's over a decade, so not earth shattering numbers, but it's still passive income. Since we had a rainy weekend I decided to go through my old images and see what else I could send. Bottom line? Small Business Owners - It is not cool to "Shop" your competitors Oct 12, 2018

So you're building a small business. Maybe you're starting your own portrait studio. You've got several potential competitors in the area. So you decide to call them pretending to be a customer and learn more about their price model and services. Not cool! Over the years I've been "shopped" more times than I care to count by other people looking to compete in the market space I'm in. I have no problem with competition, but I do have an issue when people pretend to be customers thinking they'll get more information out of me. Seriously folks, if you're starting up your small business, messing with other business owners time is not the right foot to set forward. If you need help starting up your business you'd be surprised how many "competitors" might just be willing to talk to you about their business. I've talked to many photographers and web designers over the years about what I do, and what they want to to. 9 times out of 10 they're no threat to my market space, and often I find what they're doing interesting as well. So, if you're starting up don't be a tool and "shop" your competitors. The 1 Minute iMac 2017 Repair. My BS detector is going off! Oct 11, 2018

A week ago I dropped off my 21.5 inch 2017 iMac with Geek Squad here in Prescott AZ. The system was booting up super slow, hanging up, crashing when more than one program was on, and making sizzling electric sounds randomly from the speakers. I purchased the iMac at Best Buy less than a year ago, and also purchased the Apple Care as well. The agent saw the computer was booting super slow (more than 5 minutes and a few extra minutes before you could open programs) and made the decision to send it off for repair. Apparently, whoever the computer was sent to has super powers. They booted, diagnosed, and repaired my computer in under 1 minute. That's right, 1 minute. I want their super powers! Is the system really repaired? Does Apple care more about their iPhone and iPad customers than their computer customers? Traveling with a Tablet Only - iPads and Androids for all your computing needs? Oct 09, 2018

Are today's tablet devices up to the challenge of being your only computer while on the road? Maybe..... It depends on your needs. In my case, I need more screen real estate. I also use a lot of peripherals. USB microphones, SD card readers, CF card readers, external hard drives, a keyboard, and a mouse. My job is very computing intensive. In the case of other travelers, my setup might be over kill. And a tablet may be all you need. You need to decide what it is you really need, and what you can live without. A Long Weekend and a Family Visit! Oct 08, 2018

My sister, her husband, and my 3 nephews arrived in Prescott on Saturday. Go figure, bad weather for their whole weekend here while tent camping. That's just part of travel though. Today's episode I talk about the long weekend, my camping evolution, and my family's visit. The dumpster fire that is my 2017 iMac - The first time Apple has disappointed me in a big way Oct 05, 2018

Glad to say I actually purchased Apple Care with my 2017 iMac. I don't usually do that. Maybe I doomed myself. Since getting my 2017 iMac I have experienced something I've never experienced with any other Apple product. Extreme disappointment and issues. Today I'm brining my computer "into the shop" again. Yes, this isn't the first issue, but it's the final one for me. Electric sizzling sounds from the speakers randomly, blue tooth disconnecting, Wi-Fi disconnects, programs freezing randomly, and more issues as well. Seriously, I recorded this podcast on my Macbook Pro (2014) this morning. Glad that little system still runs (albeit slowly). Tech problems happen, and sometimes you have to waste a day or two to get them dealt with. Wish me luck. HDR Photography & Aurora HDR 2019 Software - Enhanced Landscape Photography! Oct 04, 2018

Skylum has released their latest version of Aurora HDR software. So this morning I downloaded the latest version and started experimenting with it. I've been doing High Dynamic Range Photography for over a decade now. I started out with Photomatix Pro, and last year tried out Aurora. There are some things I like, and some things I don't. I've used HDR for my landscape photography and travel photography for a decade now. HDR has come a long way, and Skylum might be on the right track. We're already at Episode 29 here at the Airstream Chronicles Podcast. I have to say, I'm extremely excited that this channel is coming along so well! Why Hello Game Changer! DJI's Mavic 2 Pro first impressions Aug 30, 2018

Okay, okay. Another drone podcast? Heck yeah, it's part of my business that I run out of the Airstream. And wow, if you're interested in a small portable and powerful drone platform to bring along with you in your RV, backpack, etc, I'm thinking the Mavic 2 is it. I've gotten a couple of flights in now. And I can say for a fact that the still images coming out of the new sensor are stunning. My medical rant - Stop misplacing my paperwork folks! Aug 29, 2018

This has been a summer of doctor appointments. General practitioners, endocrinologists, allergists, ear nose and throat docs, neurologists, and a ton of misplaced paperwork. How is it that I can hand deliver paperwork to a physician's office and then receive a call weeks later that the paperwork is lost. And also that my GP needs to redo my authorization to see a referral as they misplaced that too? It doesn't inspire confidence. Not at all. As we move forward into the 21st Century I sincerely hope that we can see improvement in the medical community, it's a pretty big mess from my perspective. Early 2018 my friends Josh & Leigh visited one of my favorite locations in Arizona. The Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. They had the opportunity to visit "The Wave," and camp near The Wave at State Line Campground, right on the AZ / UT border. I can't tell you how surprised I was to get text messages and photos from them. See in years gone by there was no mobile communication from the area. It left me feeling like that super remote wilderness experience was somehow now diminished. The park was not completed at the time, nor is it today. 44 sites out of more than 100 sites have full hookups at the moment, and to help fund the continued construction of the park those sites are open. The Mavic Pro and Pro 2 - RV Sized Drones Aug 21, 2018

If you're looking for a super portable drone platform to use in your travels I can't recommend the DJI Mavic Pro enought. And hopefully soon I'll be recommending the Mavic Pro 2 as well! Flying the Mavic Pro for the last year I can say I'm extremely satisfied with the drone overall. I only have 2 major gripes. No aperture control, and the fact that my sensor leans to the "cool" side in color temperature. Just because you're a full time RV'er, or you work for yourself, or you run a small remote business with employees scattered across the country, what you do has value. Don't devalue what you bring to the table because of the lifestyle you've chosen. Today's topic comes up after a conversation with a friend about someone wanting to use one of their photos in a new book. The book's author is contacting people on Instagram and other platforms looking for free images for his new book, which he will be charging money for. The offer is he'll give photographers "Exposure" for their portfolios in his book. Nice right? That's like offering the Home Depot "Exposure" for giving you free wood for your new home build! Secretly like watching YouTube videos? Google knows all of your favorites. True privacy these days means totally unplugging. If you have a networked device using a Virtual Private Network, the people running that know where you are and what you're searching on still. How much information do you want out there? Since the Airstream first hit the road in 2006 there have always been Apple products in it. I hit the road with a MacBook Pro in 2006. Years later I purchased my second MacBook, and finally the Macbook Pro that I've had since 2014. I'm not an Apple "fan boy." The products have worked well for me for years, especially while being highly mobile. Today I'm beginning to have concerns when it comes to Apple's direction with the laptop and desktop market. I think they're focusing more on "form over function," and I think that's a dangerous road. With so much focus on iOS, and think they're losing their vision on "development grade" equipment. Creating a podcast episode with the iPhone and Anchor Aug 09, 2018

Today’s episode was put together with my iPhone 8 and Apple’s AirPods. During the recording I kept calling the AirPods air buds. Whoops! I wanted to test the audio quality with the Anchor app and the AirPods. Listening to an excerpt I’m not super happy with the audio quality provided by the AirPods. Live and learn. That’s part of experimenting with tech that’s new to you. Also in this episode I talk about turning off notifications and how that can help your concentration and work. My favorite way to procrastinate happens to be instagram. So I have notifications turned off on it so I don’t spend a lot of time on it every day!

This week won't be my typical work week. Two days are totally shot this week due to some medical issues and visits to doctors. Part of the reason I'm building my own business is to allow me the flexibility to deal with some medical problems that have been going on for over a decade now. And this summer has been very trying due to those issues. In order to address the medical stuff I really have to be very flexible about my work hours, and working for myself allows that flexibility.
