Holiday Bonus- Synanon: Drug Rehab Turned Dangerous Cult Dec 21, 2022

Show notes

On the 20th day of Christmas your true loves gave to youuuuu, an unreleased episode of TSFU Presents: Culty California!
We had originally planned for our third season of TSFU Presents to be centered around cults that originated in California, but then we took some interesting turns to Gruesome Gals and Feisty Festivals instead! In this special, and only, episode of TSFU Presents: Culty California, Ash is joined by badass survivor Jen Carole, whose parents were murdered by Josef DeAngelo aka the Golden State Killer. Jen grew up during the 60s and 70s in Southern California, when are where Synanon began. Synanon started out as an alternative to AA, a rehab program for "dope fiends", but quickly turned into a sinister and deadly cult. Synanon was also the basis for many of the programs that we see today in the TTI (troubled teen industry).

Holy f'ck y'all this is a fun one! Happy holidays!
First we've got some wild December rituals for you. Then we move onto the Peruvian Christmas fight club, Takanakuy... need we say more? And then the gals wrap things up with a Japanese festival called Kanamara Matsuri, which revolves around worshipping giant steel phalluses!

TSFU Throwback: Ep. 60- Death and Maiming: The Whakaari/White Island Volcano Disaster Dec 17, 2022

Show notes

We're re-releasing former co-host Cameron Dexter's detailed account of the 2019 White Island Volcano disaster, in coincidence with yesterday's release of "The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari" on Netflix. "Survivors' and rescuers' accounts and minute-by-minute footage fuel this gripping documentary about the deadly 2019 volcanic eruption in New Zealand."-Netflix
Cam covers the fatal eruption of the New Zealand White Island volcano on December 9, 2019. Forty-seven adventurous souls said yes to a once in a lifetime opportunity to hike to the crater of a beautiful volcano in a remote paradise. What they didn't know is that they were hiking straight into the belly of the beast – an active volcano that had just been elevated in eruption risk. But no one told the tourists of the extra risk that they'd be taking that day, and only 25 of them would survive to tell the horrific tale.

Ep. 122- Haunting: The True Story Behind "The Conjuring" Dec 16, 2022

Show notes

This week, Ash tells Michelle about the real story behind one of the scariest movies ever (at least in Ash's opinion), "The Conjuring". When the Perron family moved into what they thought was their dream home, they were greeted by what seemed like benevolent spirits. But their experience would soon change into an absolute nightmare that they'd be stuck in for years.

Best of 2022 #3: Ep. 92- Cult Leader: Jared Leto... Yes, Jared Leto Dec 15, 2022

Show notes

We've asked the people and looked at the stats to see which episodes were y'all's favorite this year. Coming in third was Jared Leto, if you missed this oldie but goodie with former co-host Cam, make sure to check it out! And if you've already heard it, we think it's definitely worth a re-listen.
Ash covers the allegations that Leto is running an actual cult and that he's been accused of sexually abusing minors for decades. You probably know him from Requiem for a Dream, The Dallas Buyers Club, or his band Thirty Seconds To Mars. But the internet is great at hiding things and while Leto has been preying on girls as young as 14 for decades, and hosting weird retreats for his fans where performances are called "Church of Mars", all of this has managed to be swept under the rug. His fans call themselves the Echelon and Leto the Prophet. Many went to a 2019 Croatia retreat where Leto walked around looking like Jesus and all of his fans followed him around, also in white garb. This cult gathering is scheduled again for this year. Get ready for a weird ride. Remember, this is all "allegedly", don't sue us Leto.
