Binge or Bust?- Ep. 14: Jesus Camp Apr 07, 2023

Show notes

Ok so this came out in 2006... think about where we are in our country right now as you watch and TRIP TF OOOUUUTTT with me!
"Jesus Camp follows Levi, Rachel and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's Army". The film follows these children at camp as they hone their "prophetic gifts" and are schooled in how to "take back America for Christ". The controversial film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America's political future.” - Amazon

Black Dahlia Breakdown: Full Series- Part I: Episodes 1 & 2 Apr 05, 2023

Show notes

This season was A LOT. So many people, places, incidents, etc. to keep track of, especially over the course of a month. Here we've taken out the intros and outros from episodes 2, 3 and 4 so that you can just follow the story straight from start to finish. You didn't ask for it, but we think you'll really enjoy a re-telling in a more straight forward and easy to follow manner! The full four episodes were too long to upload together so we've split it into 2, easy to listen to in a row, episodes.
This season was based on one of Ashley's favorite podcasts of all time, Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia. As the title explains, the podcast is about the murder of Elizabeth Short (aka "the Black Dahlia"), as well as the Hodel Family.
In this season, Ash and Megan, from Give Us Morgue, explored the man behind the mystery of who killed Elizabeth Short, George Hodel, and the generational wake of terror and destruction that he left, causing members of his own family to name the podcast the "Root of Evil" after him.
-In their first episode, Ashley and Megan, dug into the murder of the Black Dahlia and introduced the man who killed her, George Hodel.
Trigger warning for graphic details of sexual assault, torture, and mutilation.
-In their second episode, Ashley and Megan, dug further into Elizabeth Short's murderer, George Hodel. Hodel was a genius, with an IQ one point higher than Einstein- he was literally an evil genius. A highly regarded doctor who allegedly raped and murdered multiple women.
Trigger warning for sexual assault and incest.
Listen to the Part II to hear episodes 3 and 4!
Special thanks to Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile for allowing us to tell their family's story. We respect the hell out of these incredible women.

-In their second to last episode, Ashley and Megan talked about George Hodel's daughter Tamar and the legacy of pain that she left behind her after her father's treatment of her. They also talked about Tamar's first daughter, Fauna, who she had to give up at birth. Fauna had a traumatic upbringing with her adoptive parents, but that may have been her saving grace, because life with Tamar was a living hell for her kids.Trigger Warning: Incest, child abuse, sexual assault and child sex trafficking.
-In their last episode, Ashley and Megan talk about George Hodel's obsession with the surrealist art movement, which seemingly dictated his values and how he lived his entire adult life. Mark Nelson, author of The Exquisite Corpse, described surrealism as “an interplay of irrationality, eroticism, and violence…recurring in a broad array of writings and art.” Those sound like excellent themes to live by!Trigger Warning: Generally explicit material.

Bonus Episode- Interview with Philip Fairbanks, Author of "Smash, Smash, Smash" Mar 31, 2023

Show notes

While Ash looks for a new co-host, we'll be releasing some material that we had banked up! This interview was done on Instagram, so please excuse the poor audio quality, but the content is excellent!
Ashley and former co-host Michelle talk with author, and personal confidant of Caleb McGillvary, aka "Kai the Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker", about his book Smash, Smash, Smash: The True Story of Kai the Hitchhiker. Kai's story was intensely misrepresented in the smash (sorry y'all can't help a good pun) hit Netflix documentary, The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.
In our episode we tell the whole story, including Kai's side of it, which was completely left out of the documentary. Philip is here to answer some lingering questions that I think we all had.If you haven't yet listened to our episode on Kai, make sure to go listen to it before you listen to this interview!

Episode 136- Cult: Branch Davidians aka Mass Murder at Waco Mar 23, 2023

Show notes

Ashley and Michelle discuss the tragedy in Waco, Texas in 1993.
Ashley talks about the history of the Branch Davidians, how David Koresh became their leader and the incident at Ruby Ridge preceding the initial raid at the Branch Davidians' compound. She also talks about the events that unfolded over the historic 51 day siege and the extremely tragic end results. The government basically tortured a bunch of women and children to death, so trigger warning for that.

Ep. 135- Fcked Film Sets: The Wizard of Oz and The Exorcist Mar 17, 2023

Show notes

This week Ash tells Michelle about one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of our time, The Wizard of Oz, and the horrors that people endured while making it. Not to mention some of the ill fates that befell the cast and crew afterwards, particularly Judy Garland. She also re-visits the 1973 horror film The Exorcist (originally talked about in episode 36 in season 3, which will soon be Patreon exclusive!). With a total of nine deaths during production, as well as several injuries and a heap of other problems, this movie has been surrounded by mystery and conspiracies since its release and remains one of the highest grossing horror films of all time.
