That Record Got Me High Podcast

Are you a music obsessive? Can you sit down for an hour or so poring over an album you love, digging deep into the lyrics, musical references and ‘secret sauce’ that makes it so special to you? Then this just MIGHT be your podcast!
Each week your host – rock-n-roll lifer and recovering punk Rob Elba – sits down with a special guest to dissect a record that – metaphorically – got them high.

S1E26 – Felt – "The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories" w/Holly Tavel Sep 22, 2018
    Show notes

Holly Tavel calls in on a rotary phone from a distant galaxy to discuss the mysterious Lawrence and his band Felt. We try and keep up with L and his compatriot Maurice Deebank through the course of their third album, although it is admitted that our chisels don't make much of an impact on the edifice, impressive and vexing though it is. The haunting daylight mystery remains unscathed.

    S1E25 – Guided By Voices – "Propeller" w/Derek Hyde Sep 13, 2018
    Show notes

Rob and guest Derek Hyde take turns piloting the river boat up the Great Miami River to Dayton, Ohio, home of the prolific, erratic genius Robert Pollard. The cargo is Guided By Voices' 1992 album Propellor, the album which PROPELLED them into great acclaim and a career in the wider spaces. Barry is allowed to look at the scenery but is sent below deck like Lurch in The Addams Family when he makes comparisons with another 1992 musical act. Rob and Derek come ashore, erect their temple, set about adoring St. Robert, and distributing smallpox-infected GBV mix tapes to the gentle natives they find there. Long Live Rockathon! So sayeth we all.

S1E24 – The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society – w/Marianne Spellman Sep 06, 2018
    Show notes

Broward County's lovable(?), voluble dullards manage to rope in an actual authority to discuss the very very English Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks. Marianne Spellman, who travelled with and photographed The Kinks on their early 1980s tours, brings her lifelong love and knowledge of Ray, Dave et co. to our ribald den of cobbled together bullshit, and elevates things considerably.

    S1E23 – Butthole Surfers – "Independent Worm Saloon" w/Tim Moffatt Aug 30, 2018
    Show notes

We follow Dorothy (Tim Moffatt) down the Yellow Brick Road to hell, as he espouses a "unique" conspiracy theory regarding Butthole Surfers' 1993 Independent Worm Saloon. By the end we are all in for human sacrifice and special Kool Aid.

    S1E22 – Black Sabbath – "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" w/Brandon Samdahl Aug 23, 2018
    Show notes

The Sabbs emerge from the potent sludge of Vol. 4 with a decidedly nuanced effort, featuring synths and orchestration, but with some of their heaviest riffs as well. Rob, Barry, and guest Brandon Samdahl get into their teenage costumes and travel back to when they first heard the metal masterpiece, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. thatrecordgotmehigh.com trgmh33@gmail.com

S1E21 – Nick Lowe – "Pure Pop for Now People" with Garry Messick Aug 16, 2018
    Show notes

Garry Messick comes aboard the leaky submarine of That Record Got Me High and mans the pump, keeping Rob and Barry from plummeting into the crushing inky depths. We also talk about Nick Lowe's "Jesus Of Cool" via its (actually better) US counterpart, "Pure Pop For Now People." All they said 'get in', get in. thatrecordgotmehigh.com trgmh33@gmail.com

S1E20 – "Modern Lovers" – with Steve Michener from Big Dipper Aug 08, 2018
    Show notes

Steve Michener phones it in, just like we asked him to, to talk about his favorite album of all time: Modern Lovers by Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers. Rob and Barry drink and interrupt, and offer poorly-sourced opinions and historically inaccurate anecdotes. Steve did great though, and everything he said is 100% true, according to him. thatrecordgotmehigh.com trgmh33@gmail.com

S1E19 – Elton John – "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" Aug 02, 2018
    Show notes

Rob picks a childhood favorite and waxes eloquent about the contents thereof. Barry is along for the ride, and provides humorous asides a la W.C. Fields. Email us at trgmh33@gmail.com or visit our website for links and artwork at thatrecordgotmehigh.com

S1E18 – Bikini Kill – "The CD Version of the First Two Records" Jul 29, 2018
    Show notes

Hello That Record Got Me High Listeners! You might have seen this, from our first season, discussing a somewhat difficult-to-find (try Youtube) album at the very top of our most-listened-to episodes. There's an explanation for that! Soundcloud has no effective procedures for monitoring bot activity, and once bot activity is detected, no recourse for the hapless, paid in full user of Soundcloud Pro. So, thanks to some middle-eastern IP addresses trying to get us to pay for listens, our least listened to episode has become our "most listened to" episode. There's no reason to not listen to this one, as it is a ROCKING Bikini Kill CD, but just know that we now have over 150 other episodes available for your listening enjoyment, and if I do say so myself, we have upped our game. Thanks for your attention. You can support That Record Got Me High on Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH

    S1E17 – Angry Samoans – "Back From Samoa" Jul 21, 2018
    Show notes

When our big-league guest got sidelined by a family emergency, we had to scramble for a suitable subject that we could dissect without a lot of fuss. Back From Samoa to the rescue! Angry Samoans 1982 hardcore punk classic in all it's 17:49 glory. Songs about Hitler's cock, serial killers, you name it, it's an all-purpose romp through the "twisted mind" of Metal Mike and Co.
