True Ghost Stories: A Playful Ghost Yanked Greg Off His Feet at Soho House in London Jul 31, 2024
    Show notes

Greg was being a grump on his vacation until he got a little push from the other side....

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey it's Michelle, and this one made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it and then made me think about it for days afterward. Greg from Los Angeles called in with a true ghost story from his summer vacation in London that is unlike almost anything else in the Tell Me A Ghost Story archive. This is not a frightening ghost story. It is a playful one.

Greg was visiting Soho House Dean Street in London with his husband, one of the most historic and atmospherically loaded buildings in a city that has more haunted real estate per square mile than almost anywhere else on earth. Greg had been feeling off all evening. Something about the energy of the building was registering in a way he could not quite name. Two strangers came and sat at his table uninvited. His vibe, as Greg puts it, was a little off.

When it was time to leave, Greg and his husband decided to explore one of the empty floors on their way out. Empty is the key word. The rest of Soho House Dean Street was packed that night. This floor had no one on it at all. Every time Greg turned a corner expecting to find someone he felt the presence of, there was nothing there. The feeling in his stomach said he should not be on that floor. He kept exploring anyway.

Then on the stairs he caught a glimpse of shoes behind him. He turned to finally see whoever had been just out of sight all evening. And at that exact moment something yanked his feet out from under him. Both legs flew into the air. His husband watched him go fully horizontal for a second before he dropped. It was, Greg says, like stepping on a cartoon banana peel. He had had one glass of wine. He knows how to walk. Something did that.

Greg did not feel afraid. He felt like he had been played with by something that had been dead for a very long time and had decided that his vacation was a good opportunity to have some fun. He left London with a giant bruise on his backside that stayed with him for the rest of the trip and disappeared completely on the flight home to California. Greg took that as a message. Come back. Visit again. Your friend in the stairway will be waiting.

One caller. One true ghost story from a historic members club in London where the ghost apparently has opinions about whether visitors are enjoying themselves enough. And a standing invitation to return.

Before you go, Greg hosts his own podcast called Miss Thing which you can watch on YouTube at youtube.com/@MissThingPodcast and listen to on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Go check it out.

True Ghost Stories: Elijah's Neighbor Deborah and the Disturbing Behavior That Had a Supernatural Explanation Jul 17, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode belongs entirely to Elijah, who called in with a true ghost story that starts as a neighbor dispute and ends somewhere considerably more unsettling than any neighborhood conflict has any right to go. Elijah was not looking for a paranormal experience. He was dealing with a difficult neighbor named Deborah. What he eventually came to understand about Deborah's behavior is the part that made him pick up the phone and call this show.

Neighbor stories occupy a specific and underexplored corner of paranormal experience because they involve the particular vulnerability of sharing a building or a property line with someone whose presence you cannot avoid and whose private life you are not supposed to know about. Elijah knew Deborah was his neighbor. He knew her name. He could hear her and see her and observe the things she did that did not add up. What he did not know at first was whether what he was witnessing had a human explanation or something else entirely behind it.

The disturbing behavior Elijah describes built the way the best paranormal accounts in this archive always build, with individual incidents that each have a possible rational explanation and a cumulative weight that eventually makes rational explanation insufficient. Deborah was doing things that neighbors do not do. Then she was doing things that people do not do. Then Elijah began to understand that the question of what was driving her behavior might not have a human answer.

The title of this episode is a statement that Elijah arrived at after everything he witnessed and everything he came to understand about what was happening next door. The Devil's name is Deborah is not a metaphor. It is Elijah's conclusion and this episode is how he got there.

One caller. One true ghost story about a neighbor named Deborah and what Elijah eventually realized was living behind her eyes. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

True Ghost Stories: A Haunted House Hunt in Texas and Michelle's Own Ghost Story from an Old Lady's Pool House Jul 10, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. These calls were later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode is another one where I am not just hosting. I am in it. Alexandra from Texas calls in first with a real paranormal encounter that happened while she was simply trying to find somewhere to live. Then I share one of my own true ghost stories from a period of my life that I have not talked about much on the show. Two women. Two properties. Two experiences that made it very clear that the spaces we move through have histories we do not always get to know about in advance.

Alexandra went house hunting in Texas and found something she was not looking for. Texas has appeared in this archive more than almost any other state, which makes sense when you consider the depth and violence of its history and the way that history has concentrated in its land and its buildings across centuries. Alexandra was not investigating a famously haunted location or visiting a property with a documented paranormal reputation. She was looking for somewhere to live. What she encountered during that search made her decision considerably easier because whatever was in that house made clear very quickly that it was not interested in new tenants.

Then I have to tell you about Carol's pool house. Carol was an elderly woman who rented out the pool house on her property, and I lived in it for a period of time that taught me more about the paranormal than I had bargained for when I signed the lease. A pool house is a specific kind of space. Small. Detached from the main building. With its own atmosphere and its own history that does not always connect in obvious ways to the larger property it belongs to. What was in Carol's pool house with me was aware of me in a way that made the space feel permanently occupied even when I was the only one physically present.

This is one of the true ghost stories from my own life that made me understand on a personal level why the callers who come to this show need to tell their stories to someone who will believe them. I believe Alexandra. I believe everyone who has called in. I have my own reasons.

Two true ghost stories. One from Alexandra in Texas. One from your host. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

True Ghost Stories: Edwin's Haunted Hostel in Ecuador and the Presence That Came With the Building Jul 03, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey it's Michelle, and Edwin is back. If you heard his first two calls about the house in Wanka, Ecuador with the footsteps on the second floor, the knock at the door with no one outside, and the dog who would not stop barking at the stairs, you already know that Edwin has a particular sensitivity to the paranormal and a particular talent for finding himself in spaces that are actively occupied by something that does not show up on the guest registry. This time it was his workplace.

Edwin was working at a hostel in Ecuador when he began noticing that the building had a presence that preceded him and would outlast him. Hostels are an interesting category of paranormal location because of the nature of what they are. Transient spaces where hundreds of people pass through every year, each carrying their own emotional weight, their own histories, their own reasons for being far from home. That accumulated human experience concentrates in the walls and the corridors and the common areas in ways that more static spaces do not, and whatever Edwin encountered in that hostel had been absorbing that accumulation for a long time before he arrived for his shift.

What Edwin experienced working there built the way his previous encounters in the Wanka house had built, gradually and then all at once, with the specific pattern of paranormal activity that starts as something you can talk yourself out of and ends as something you cannot. Edwin has now called in with three separate paranormal encounters from Ecuador and the thread running through all of them is consistent. He pays attention. He notices things. And the things he notices are real.

Ecuador's paranormal tradition is deeply rooted in the intersection of Indigenous Andean spiritual belief and Spanish colonial Catholic practice, two systems that approach the relationship between the living and the dead with an intensity and a specificity that shapes how Ecuadorians across generations interpret what they encounter in haunted spaces. Edwin carries that cultural context into every call he makes to this show, and it makes his accounts of what he experiences richer and more grounded than a standard haunted location story.

One returning caller. One true ghost story from a haunted hostel in Ecuador and a presence that was already there when Edwin arrived. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

True Ghost Stories: An Alaskan Haunting, a Converted Skeptic, and a Ghost in the Shower Jun 26, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. These calls were later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode has three true ghost stories that cover three completely different paranormal experiences in three completely different registers. One is rooted in the landscape of Alaska and the specific supernatural weight of that place. One is about the moment a skeptic runs out of explanations. And one involves a ghost in the shower, which I will just say upfront is exactly as unsettling as it sounds.

The first caller takes us to Alaska with a haunting that is shaped by the landscape itself. Alaska has one of the most distinctive and least documented paranormal geographies in the United States, a vast and ancient wilderness where Indigenous spiritual traditions going back thousands of years coexist with the specific isolation and darkness of a place where winter lasts most of the year, and the land has a presence that visitors describe immediately and consistently. Whatever happened to our caller in Alaska happened in that context, and that context matters.

Then a skeptic calls in. Every ghost story community has a soft spot for the skeptic conversion story because it is the one that carries the most implicit credibility. A person who does not believe in the paranormal, who has logical explanations ready for every unexplained thing they encounter, who has spent years dismissing the experiences of people around them, and who then encounters something that dismantles every explanation they have ever used. Our caller was that person. This episode is what changed them.

And finally, the shower ghost. Someone called in with a real paranormal encounter that happened in what should be the most private and ordinary space in any home, and discovered that privacy means nothing to whatever was sharing their bathroom. The shower ghost is specific enough in what it did and how it made itself known that our caller has not entirely reconciled themselves to the experience and probably never will.

Three real callers. Three true ghost stories from Alaska, a skeptic's last stand, and a bathroom that stopped feeling safe. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

True Ghost Stories: Jasmine Evicts an Elderly Ghost from Her Closet in New Zealand Jun 13, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary, if you want the complete experience.

Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode belongs entirely to Jasmine from New Zealand, who called in with a true ghost story that is unlike almost anything else in the early archive. Most of the callers in this show's history encountered something and then had to figure out how to live with it or leave. Jasmine decided to evict hers.

The ghost in question was an elderly figure who had taken up residence in Jasmine's closet. Not a threatening presence in the traditional sense. Not something that chased her or touched her or appeared at her bedside in the middle of the night. Just an elderly phantom, stubbornly occupying a closet in an otherwise ordinary home in New Zealand, with the specific immovable quality of someone who had been there longer than Jasmine had and saw no particular reason to acknowledge that the living arrangements had changed.

What Jasmine did about it is the heart of this episode, and it is one of the more proactive responses to a haunting that Tell Me A Ghost Story has ever aired. Most callers are on the receiving end of whatever their ghost decides to do. Jasmine took a different approach. She decided the closet was hers, and the elderly phantom was going to have to find somewhere else to be.

New Zealand has a rich and distinctive supernatural tradition rooted in Māori spiritual belief, a living Indigenous culture that understands the relationship between the living and the dead with a depth and specificity that shapes how New Zealanders across all backgrounds tend to interpret and respond to paranormal encounters. The approach Jasmine took to her closet ghost reflects a pragmatism about the supernatural that feels distinctly New Zealand in its directness and its lack of drama. There was a ghost in her closet. She dealt with it. She called in to tell us how.

One caller. One true ghost story about an elderly phantom in a closet in New Zealand and the woman who decided enough was enough. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

True Ghost Stories: Gabby's Haunted House in Texas and Everything That Refuses to Leave May 30, 2024
    Show notes

Here is the fully reoptimized version ready to drop straight into Spotify.

    Updated Title

True Ghost Stories: Gabby's Haunted House in Texas and Everything That Refuses to Leave

    Updated Description

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey it's Michelle, and this early episode belongs entirely to Gabby from Texas, who called in with a true ghost story about the haunted house she is living in right now. Not a house she visited. Not a place she stayed once. The house she goes home to. The house she has to figure out how to exist inside of while something in it makes clear on a regular basis that she is not the only one there.

There is a specific kind of haunting that is different from a one time encounter or a location visit that goes wrong. It is the kind that is woven into the fabric of daily life, where the paranormal is not an event that happens and then ends but a condition that has to be navigated alongside everything else. Getting up in the morning. Making coffee. Going to sleep at night. Gabby is doing all of those things in a house that has activity she cannot explain and cannot avoid because it is her home.

Texas has a deep and wide paranormal geography shaped by centuries of Indigenous history, Spanish colonial settlement, the violence of the Texas Revolution and the Civil War, and the particular intensity of the land itself across its various regions. Haunted houses in Texas tend to carry layered histories that go back further than their current owners know and Gabby's house is no exception. What is happening in her home connects to something that was there before she arrived and that has shown no particular interest in acknowledging that the house changed hands.

Gabby called in because she needed to tell someone who would believe her. That is why this show exists. One caller. One true ghost story about a woman in Texas who is dealing with one very haunted house. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.

If you have a real ghost story of your own, a haunting experience, something you heard, something you cannot explain, I want to hear it. Call 1 (701) 484-2666 or visit tellmeaghoststory.com to share your story.

True Ghost Stories: Paige's Middle School Field Trip to Gettysburg and What She Brought Home With Her May 01, 2024
    Show notes

This is one of the original Tell Me A Ghost Story calls from the early days of the show. Short, raw, and exactly where it all started. This call was later incorporated into a longer compilation episode with full host commentary if you want the complete experience.

Hey, it's Michelle, and this early episode belongs entirely to Paige, who called in with a true ghost story that begins with a middle school field trip to Gettysburg and ends somewhere considerably darker than any school permission slip prepared her for.

Gettysburg is one of the most extensively documented paranormal locations in the United States, and the reasons are not difficult to understand. In three days in July of 1863, more than fifty thousand soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing on that ground. The sheer volume of violent, sudden death concentrated in one place over seventy-two hours created a paranormal landscape that researchers have been investigating and documenting for over a century. Gettysburg is not haunted in the way that an old house or a hotel is haunted. It is haunted in the way that a wound is haunted, pervasively, historically, and with a weight that visitors describe feeling before they know what they are standing on.

Paige was a middle school student on a field trip. She was there to learn about American Civil War history. What she encountered on that battlefield went significantly beyond the curriculum, and what she brought home with her afterward made clear that something on that ground had decided to come along.

The question the original description asks is exactly the right one for this episode. What could go wrong on a middle school field trip to Gettysburg? The answer is that Gettysburg has been answering that question for visitors for a hundred and sixty years, and Paige became one of them on a Tuesday afternoon with her classmates and a packed lunch.

One caller. One true ghost story from the most haunted battlefield in American history and a middle schooler who did not go looking for anything and found it anyway. This is where Tell Me A Ghost Story began.
