    How can we ensure access for all students in the math classroom?

    Today on the podcast we’re joined by Amy Lucenta and Grace Kelemanik. Amy and Grace are co-authors of Routines for Reasoning: Fostering the Mathematical Practices in All Students. Amy and Grace are big proponents of helping students develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills, and say that building routines into math instruction is one way to do that.

    We confer with our students in reading and writing, but why isn’t it as common during math?

    Today on the podcast, we’re joined by Jen Munson, author of In the Moment, and Faith Kwon and Mary Trinkle, teachers from East Palo Alto California in whose classrooms Jen conducted much of her research for the book. Jen, Faith, and Mary believe that talking to students about their work, while they work, is a powerful way of supporting learning. While conferring in math takes ques from reading and writing conferences, its structure is unique.

    So we wanted to know: Why is conferring in math important?

Sue says that many of us were taught math in ways that focused on memorization, and regurgitation. But that doesn’t necessarily lead to deep understanding. To foster true fluency, she says we should start by taking some tips from literature and find ways to contextualize math problems so kids can make sense of them.

Harper currently serves as the Robert Quartermain Professor of Gender & Sexuality Research in Education within the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. He is the founder of the Trans Educators Network, a community building group aimed at supporting trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming Pre-K-12 educators in the United States and Canada.
