    Meet Margarita Lezama, a middle school ESL and ESOL teacher at Brownsville Middle School, part of Miami-Dade Public Schools in Miami, Florida. When she was a child, Margarita and her family fled the political situation in Nicaragua and immigrated to Mexico before seeking asylum in the United states in 1983. She now teaches a large immigrant population and relates with her students on topics like coping with culture shock, learning English, and facing discrimination. Margarita encourages her students to strive for higher education and set goals for themselves to pursue their passions.

    From ELL Student to HS Math Teacher with Priyank Bhatt Aug 11, 2020

    Meet Priyank Bhatt, a lead math teacher at West Side High School, part of the Newark Public Schools in New Jersey.
    When he was a child, Priyank moved from India to the U.S., and learned English with the help of a dedicated ESL teacher and by watching cartoons with his friends. Even while he was struggling with the language barrier, Priyank discovered that math was universal, and began to tutor his friends when they struggled in class. By the time he was pursuing a master’s in education from Montclair State University, he had also begun working in Newark as an urban educator and has been there ever since.

    Amplifying Student Voices with Kelly Harper Jul 28, 2020

    Meet Kelly Harper, a third-grade teacher at Mary Bethune Elementary, part of Fulton County Schools in Georgia.
    After winning the 2019 District of Columbia Teacher of the Year Award and being named one of four finalists for the 2019 National Teacher of the Year, Kelly moved from Washington, D.C., to Atlanta, where she employs social-emotional learning to work toward dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. Kelly champions student voice and has a passion for inspiring a love of reading.

    Overcoming Trauma in Parkland, FL with Sarah Lerner Jun 23, 2020

    Meet Sarah Lerner, an advisor for the yearbook and an English and journalism teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

    On February 14th, 2018, 17 individuals at the school lost their lives to gun violence. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Sarah and her students wrote and published an award-winning yearbook in the space of a few months honoring the victims.

    Sarah is passionate about mental health and advocating for gun reform. She was a finalist for both the Florida Scholastic Press Association Teacher of the Year and the Columbia Scholastic Press Gold Key Award. She also oversaw the publication of the student written anthology Parkland Speaks: Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas Share Their Stories. Follow Sarah on Twitter @mrs_lerner.

    Meet Debra Liese, our very first minisode guest, who met with Noelle to discuss Homeschooling during COVID-19. Debra is a publishing professional with a background in education who, like many parents, has been working remotely full-time while helping to teach her children whose public schools have been shuttered during the COVID-19 crisis. Currently the Curator of Ideas at Princeton University Press, Debra previously homeschooled one of her children, has taught multiple writing courses, and is a certified teacher of high school English with an MFA in writing and a lifelong interest in creative learning environments.
