Welcome to Season 2, Episode 12!

In this episode, Jen responds to this question:

“I’m curious about what your conferring notes look like. Do you have conventions or abbreviations that you use find work to communicate between co-teachers? What are you writing down specifically? I would find it helpful to see what proficient conferring teachers’ notes look like.”

Jen has tried (and learned from) several systems, and in the show she shares what she has learned.

This episode marks the last episode of Season 2 of the podcast. Due to unexpected circumstances, we have postponed our end-of-season celebration previously scheduled for December 28 and 29. We apologize for any confusion caused by the late notice.

Thank you for listening to this episode and this season of Teachers Ask Jen Serravallo. We hope it has been helpful and given you ideas to bring into your teaching practice. See you for Season 3!

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 11!

In this episode, Jen responds to two question from Mary. First:

“What kind of professional development do you recommend for reading specialists working with K-2 students?”

    And then:

“When it comes to struggling readers – what should take priority? Skills or time spent reading?”

    Thank you, Mary!

The answer to Mary’s first question is straight-forward: reading recovery training.

The answer to the second question, however is a little more tricky…

On December 28 and 29 The Teacher Learning Sessions is hosting a two-day celebration of the second season of Teachers Ask Jen Serravallo with its first-ever donor drive! Of course, you are invited! We will celebrate the show, connect, and learn together! Please donate to join us!

In this episode, Jen responds to a question from Lisa:

“In a K/1 classroom, what is your ideal balance for guided reading, strategy groups, and conferring during independent reading? I have trouble fitting it all in! my principal really pushes guided reading, so that’s where my focus has been, but I know there is great value in conferring and strategy groups, I just don’t know how to make it all work.”

    Thank you, Lisa!

In this episode, Jen talks about matching teaching methods to instructional purpose and defines several teaching structures to help support kids’ independent and instructional reading goals.

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9!

In this episode, Jen responds to a question from Carol:

“What kind of reading responses would you want students in grades 3-5 to write in their reading notebook during the first few weeks of class?”

    Thank you, Carol!

Carol’s question is specific, but Jen broadens her response to address other grade levels and other times of the school year as well. One key to helping students successfully write in response to their reading is establishing a balance between the two activities.

Teacher Ask Jen Serravallo. Season 2, Episode 8 Nov 30, 2016
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 8!

In this episode, Jen responds to a question from Glenda:

“I work with 2-5 grade LA teachers. One topic that comes up is reserving titles for certain grade levels. I can understand a couple of titles for read alouds, but at some point I feel like it’s unfair to “reserve” a title for a single grade level. I believe that books can be old friends to be revisited multiple times with multiple lenses. Also, it can cause teachers to become stagnant and not search out new titles. It has been suggested that grade levels write down what books they’ve used so that other grade levels don’t use them. How do you feel about this?”

    Thank you, Glenda!

In addition to answering Glenda’s question, Jen shares advice to help when selecting read aloud texts.

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 7!

In this episode, Jen responds to a question from a teacher who wises to remain anonymous:

“Can you share suggestions on how we can include parents in our conversation about how to grow readers and writers? The balanced literacy approach is uncomfortable for many parents. This often leads to frustrated parents that just can’t understand why we can’t teach the way they learned. They want to help their child, but they just don’t know how.”

    Thank you for your question!

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 6!

In this episode, Jen responds to a question from Dani:

“I would love if you could share any ideas on how you do encourage home involvement. That’s really what a reading log assesses, I think. I really don’t want to do a reading log, but I think parents may end up requesting it!”

“I want to assess my students (2nd graders) using our F&P assessment kit to find their current reading levels. What tips do you have to assess them (all 32 of them) in a timely manner? It still takes me a long time per student and the thought of getting all 32 done is overwhelming.”
