Teacher Quit Talk

Episode 49: Recess Aug 17, 2023

Show notes

Recess is a win-win-win. The kids are winning because they're getting their wiggles out and it's good for their brain and body. The teachers are winning because they get more planning time. And then the district is winning because both those things will drive scores. So then why is recess getting shorter and shorter?

Episode 48: Teacher Icks Aug 09, 2023

Show notes

Welcome back. We're doing something a little different today. Well, it's not a different 'cause we're literally just talking shit, but it's in a little bit of a different format: we're purely talking shit versus having a topic to talk shit about.

So today we're gonna do teacher icks. When we say teacher “icks”, we mean that in whatever your interpretation is. Icks in regards to teacher actions that we think are icky because we don't think they're good for students, icks for things administrators do or say. Here's a list of things we hate. Enjoy!

Episode 47: Jerkenstocks Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

We’re reading some of the most unhinged correspondence you’ve received. Plus we’ve got an update on “Key Gate.” We’re unpacking hard hitting questions like “Is it illegal to send a kid to school in an Uber?” and “Why was that kid hoarding expired food in his locker?” Listen through the end where we share about the times we just couldn’t hold it together in the classroom (in a good way!)

Episode 46: Key Confetti Jul 26, 2023

Show notes

Thank you, thank you Patreon people! We couldn’t do this show without you. Today we’re reading submissions from the Patrons. There are some bananas principals out there and it’s pretty incredible what they can get away with. C’est la vie, I guess that just means we’ll get more letters to read (that was sarcasm).

Episode 44: The Social Studies Struggle Jul 12, 2023

Show notes

We’re starting a community college! Ok, not exactly. You asked us to do deeper dives and we heard you! Going forward, the show’s going to be a little different. We’re going to change gears and get into the nitty-gritty nerd stuff. We’ll still have guests but the episodes will be more topic-focused.

For our first episode in the new format, we’re talking about social studies. Obviously this subject is near and dear to our hearts. Let’s get into the outdated materials, what standards really mean, censorship, and more!

Episode 40: OMG, the US is a Cult Jun 15, 2023

Show notes

Please take care when listening. Honestly, content warning for basically everything on this one. We list them out at the top of the show.

Lauren is autistic, queer, and adhd. A year ago she left her teaching position in rural Indiana amidst an utter shitstorm of bigotry and bureaucracy. More than half of all proposed anti-lgbtqia+ bills are in education so we asked her to come on the show today to talk about some of these bills as well as her lived-experience with queerness and neurodivergence in the school system.
