The Wisdom Of Putting Things Together As Parents | 170 Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, David and I took a few days to head up to the mountains to pray and plan about the next few months. We do that regularly, for everything we do runs through our house– as do a whole lot of teenagers and young adults. Getting away is honestly the only way we can effectively plan it feels like. One morning, David shared with me what he had learned in his devotions that morning and by pulling on a few extra threads, so to speak, in his study, and I convinced him to chat with me about it today, for it’s all about how we can pass on wisdom to our children by helping them put things together. There is some GREAT, super practical information for parents. Podcast Sponsor: Today’s podcast is sponsored by AOP. Homeschooling empowers parents to give their children an individualized education like no other educational setup can provide. With AOP, you can teach your children in the way they learn best while keeping homeschooling fun and full of excitement as you discover new things each day. Choose from multiple curriculum options to fit your child’s strengths, learning style, and needs. These shoeboxes give us a wonderful way to participate in the gospel going all around the world as each child who receives a gift also hears about Jesus' love for them and gets a copy of The Greatest Journey, which is connected to a discipleship program they are invited to participate in. Today, we’re talking about how you can discipline and teach a strong-willed child who doesn’t seem to care about the consequences. We’ll also spend some time chatting about the lessons parents of strong-willed kiddos get to learn and how God uses those children to refine and sanctify us along the way. This week, Leslie will to talk to you about something that’s been on her heart for a while, and that’s the importance of living in community with one another. God created us and called us to be part of a body of believers, but she talks to so many who are isolated, often by choice. Prioritizing community always seemed like a foreign concept to Leslie. As a deeply introverted person by nature, she never saw the need to invest in community at all. Has God ever changed her heart and my focus through the years! This week, we’re going to look at community through both Biblical and practical lenses. We’ll be discussing several agreed-upon benefits of community and marveling at how God’s plans for us truly are always best. TTD events and resources have been used by the Lord to impact countless homeschool families just like yours by encouraging their hearts, refocusing their minds, and helping them find joy and order in what God has called them to do. It is truly a JOY to get together with thousands of others who are making decisions that put the hearts and minds of their family first. These past couple of years have been challenging in so many ways and our culture has changed immensely and quickly. The reality for our children is a lot different than they were for us when we were growing up. So how can we help them learn to roll with changes in their lives, and how can we help them bounce back when they’re disappointed? Beyond even that how can we silence the voices of doubt and failure in our own minds and find our own resiliency as parents? Today’s episode is one that I recorded in 2021, and I thought was incredibly relevant and helpful for us today. I'm joined by a favorite around here Dr. Kathy Koch. Dr Kathy is one of the most knowledgeable and insightful people I know. She loves people, and it shows. On her heart right now is helping children and adults to be resilient, and she recently published a book on the subject called Resilient Kids: Raising Them to Embrace Life with Confidence. Strength and Hope Out of Tragedy | 163 Oct 20, 2022

Elizabeth Groff grew up in an orphanage in Ukraine, and had a really rough childhood. But God didn’t leave her in her difficult situation. She received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox and heard the Good News of God's love for her. Not too long after that, she was adopted and moved to the US. While in college, she started an Operation Christmas Child club and throughout her life, she has participated in packing thousands of shoeboxes. As you’ll find out later in this episode, Elizabeth has recently reconnected with her sister who she hadn't seen since childhood and has had the opportunity to show her Jesus’ love in very practical ways as well. Meet the Podcast Guest:Elizabeth Groff was born and raised in Eastern Ukraine. She grew up in a broken family and ended up in an orphanage when she was only 7years old. While she was in the orphanage, Elizabeth received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift. Because of the shoebox, she began to have hope that God would not leave her at rock bottom, but that He would meet her there, and become her family. At the age of 13, Elizabeth was adopted into an American family. While a student at Virginia Tech, she enjoyed getting people involved in her Shoebox Club on campus. She went on to earn her master’s degree in Public Health and now works in the health care field. Elizabeth continues to encourage people to pack shoebox gifts wherever she is.Podcast Sponsor: Operation Christmas Child demonstrates God's love to children worldwide by delivering gift-filled shoeboxes and the good news of Jesus Christ! Each shoebox is an opportunity for a child to hear the Gospel and be invited into a 12 lesson discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. Since 1993, more than 198 million children have received a shoebox gift and since 2010 more than 30.9 million children have been discipled. Children are now praying for and sharing their faith with family and friends. As a result of this ever-expanding witness, new churches are starting and communities are being transformed! Together we are working to see “a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9-10).
