58 – The Hippie Years (Commune Life w/ Justin Starkweather) Aug 27, 2020
    Show notes

We've finally arrived at the long-awaited Hippie Years episode in the 3-part series on Melody's father Justin Starkweather. (Part 1 is Episode 44 and Part 2 is Episode 55.) Justin gives us the scoop on life in the late 60s/early 70s at Twin Oaks, a commune in rural Virginia, USA. He discusses commune life, the division of labor and how people lived. We talk sex, drugs and rock n roll, and a number of interesting accompanying characters. Of course, as in Justin's other episodes, we encounter celebrities too - Patch Adams and Glenn Frey, to name a couple. There are also cockroaches, skinny dipping, giant snakes, yummy yeast, parties, and a lot of hard, hard work. Oh! And we finally learn the story of why Justin changed his name from John. What a guy; what a legend! Note: Melody's recipe for Golden Gravy, recanted from memory, was a bit off - find the recipe here: https://www.food.com/recipe/golden-gravy-312205 If you would like to support the podcast, please subscribe, rate and review us (positively, pretty please) on your favourite podcast platform! Or head over to patreon.com/teachmetigerpodcast to throw us a couple bucks. We appreciate all of your love and support in whatever form it may take!

56 – Evil Geniuses? (Roman Polanski and Leni Riefenstahl w/ Melody & Liz) Jul 30, 2020
    Show notes

Melody and Liz are back at it, nerding out on another research project for your listening pleasure. This week we're talking about some seriously problematic filmmakers: Roman Polanski, Leni Riefenstahl and even a touch of the Woody Allen. Undeniably talented, they all have experienced huge levels of success in their careers. Polanski (and Allen) have gone on to work with A-list actors and receive accolades and major awards still to this day. Leni Riefenstahl, AKA Hitler's Filmmaker, didn't make another feature film after the war was over, despite her huge success before and during WW2. There's a lot to dig into and a lot of for these filmmakers to dig themselves out of. The Roman Polanski AP Timeline Liz referred to can be found at https://apnews.com/e087fdee79e74caf99caa27edd8a8887/A-timeline-of-Roman-Polanski's-4-decade-underage-sex-case If you enjoy the show, please tell your friends about us, rate, review and subscribe, or toss us a toonie at patreon.com/teachmetigerpodcast. Thank you!

55 -Trying Different Things (Life After Dance w/ Justin Starkweather) Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

Melody's Dad is back in the New York groove. Justin Starkweather is the star of this episode, which picks up where we left off in 1960s NYC in Episode 44 - My Daddy Is A Ballerina. (If you haven't yet listened to 44, we'd recommend starting there.) In this period of soul searching and "trying different things," Justin gets into Sufi whirling, or Dervish turning, where he searches for his deep self....and finds it. Although meditation didn't come naturally at that time, it plays a prominent role in his contemporary life and comes up a lot throughout our chat. In this period, he also tries his hand at a couple of different careers in the arts. He gets into puppeteering and is given an opportunity to meet the then unknown Jim Henson, but regrettably says, "nahhhhh." And he has some adventures and success in filmmaking - but ends up saying "nah" to that too. Books, having greatly influenced a lot of his interests are what brought him to Montessori. He trained at a convent under Mother Isabel, who learned from Maria Montessori herself. But then came the teaching, and in practise, it got another big "nah." If you can believe it, there's another huge life change looming on Justin's horizon, sparked by yet another book, that involves long hair, a strange beard and a bunch of hippies - but we will get into that in our next installment. Enjoy this glimpse of the past from the coolest guy ever (seriously tho, the COOLEST), Justin Starkweather. I LOVE YOU DAD!
