Matthew: The Death Of John the Baptist & 5,000 Fed (Chapter 14) Apr 04, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, Tim is joined by Theological Professor/Bible Teacher David Klingler to discuss the book of Matthew chapter 14. Today we dive into the understanding of John the Baptist's death and why many believed Jesus was John from the dead. Also, after hearing the news of John's death, Jesus does a miracle feeding 5,000 people. Why would he do that? I guess today will be great for insight into who Christ is to the people. We conclude our discussion by talking about how the Old Testament is so important when it comes to the imagery of the New Testament.
Matthew is the most Jewish-centric of the four gospels. The apostle regularly invoked the writings of the Old Testament prophets to illustrate Jesus's identity as Israel's long-awaited Messiah. Matthew wrote his account of Jesus's ministry to show that Jesus was and is indeed the King, Israel's long-awaited Messiah. Matthew's commitment to grounding the life of Jesus in the Old Testament raised Jesus above the multitude of these false messiahs.
Do you ever feel as though God has deserted you or that He sits in silence in the face of your requests? As we read through the pages of Matthew, not only do we see Jesus Christ revealed as Israel's King and Messiah, but His coming to earth as God in the flesh reminds us of His deep love for us. Now resurrected and ascended, the Lord Jesus will always be with us, even to the end of time. Christ's commission to His followers is still His mandate to us today: "Make disciples of all the nations." Christ's work of building His church is the work He does through each of us.

Jesus sends out disciples to do as he has done, proclaiming the kingdom of heaven is near. He instructs them to go only to the Jews and no other people. While the disciples went on to teach, Jesus heard about John from his disciples, asking, "Are you the one who is to come?" Jesus responds to give back to John that can affirm He is the one. We end our time together talking about the well-known verse, "come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

In this episode, Tim is joined by Theological Professor/Bible Teacher David Klingler to discuss the book of Matthew Chapter 8 and some of Chapter 9. Jesus begins doing miracles, but more importantly, He's beginning to demonstrate himself as the Christ. Many of the miracles in the New Testament have Old Testament symbolism. It's amazing to see how things continually tie back to the Old Testament. Matthew is continually reminding us of the complete journey before Christ and with Christ.
Matthew is the most Jewish-centric of the four gospels. After listening to this episode, the phrase " it is a narrow gate that leads to life might be better understood.
