Trump survives an assassination attempt. Jul 15, 2024
    Show notes

The Trump assassination attempt. On Saturday, former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Around six minutes into his remarks, gunshots rang out and Trump grabbed his right ear, dropping to the ground as Secret Service agents swarmed him. Moments later, Trump stood up surrounded by Secret Service with blood covering his ear and running down his face, raised his fist to the crowd, and mouthed “fight” multiple times. He was quickly led off stage and taken to a local hospital. On Saturday night, Trump posted on Truth Social “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.” He was otherwise uninjured.

Welcome to my TED talk. Jul 11, 2024
    Show notes

A few months ago I flew to Vancouver to give a talk at TED2024 in Vancouver. I'd call something like this a "bucket list" item, except I never actually imagined it was something I'd get to do. The invitation was more like a monster surprise, a major career achievement, and a really fun way to spread the word about what we're doing here at Tangle.

Anyway, when I made the trip, we announced it in the newsletter. Predictably, thousands of readers asked about how to watch or listen to the TED talk, so we decided to highlight the video in the newsletter once the final version was released. It took a few months, but my talk has finally been published.

In it, I discuss Tangle’s mission, the work we are doing, and the current state of U.S. polarization. Anyone who reads Tangle should find it interesting, so we’re sharing the talk with everyone here in lieu of a regular newsletter. While you're there, I ask that you please leave a comment (tell people to go read Tangle!) or "like" the video, which will boost it in the YouTube algorithm and hopefully encourage TED to promote it. These simple actions will drive new readers to Tangle and would be very helpful for us.

Finally, I want to give a special shoutout to a few people: Tangle Managing Editor Ari Weitzman, who wrote the first draft of the talk and deserves much of the credit for how well it turned out. Cloe Shasha Brooks from TED, who helped us refine and edit it several times over — she is incredibly good at her job, and also a regular Tangle reader, which makes me like her even more. And Chris Anderson, the president of TED, who shared some of our initial coverage of the war in Gaza and then responded to my direct message on Twitter, which is how I ended up getting involved with TED. You guys all rock, and I appreciate you.

As always, if you have thoughts about anything we write or that I say, feel free to let us know. But most of all: Please engage with the video and then share it, which will help us spread the word about Tangle!

The Republican party platform. Jul 10, 2024
    Show notes

The Republican Party’s platform. Over the weekend, the Republican party released its 2024 campaign platform, the first time it has released a party platform since 2016. The document — titled “2024 GOP Platform Make America Great Again!” — includes 20 promises and 10 chapters outlining the governing priorities for a Republican president. Typically, the Republican and Democrat parties release their platforms ahead of their national conventions, and this year’s release precedes the GOP’s national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that will start on July 15.

The surprise French election results. Jul 09, 2024
    Show notes

The French elections. Over the weekend, a leftist coalition called the New Popular Front (NFP) won a plurality of seats in the 2024 French legislative election in a surprise upset over a right-wing movement that was expected to dominate the election. However, the New Popular Front failed to win a majority, leaving open the possibility of a hung parliament, which would be an unprecedented outcome in French history.

Should President Biden drop out? Jul 08, 2024
    Show notes

Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. In the eleven days since President Joe Biden’s widely criticized performance in the first presidential debate, a growing number of donors, allies, and Democratic lawmakers have called on the president to drop out of the race. Several polls released in the last week show former President Donald Trump’s lead over Biden increasing, adding to Democrats’ fears that the president’s reelection effort is failing with Election Day less than four months away (though a Bloomberg poll released on Saturday showed Biden leading Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin for the first time). Biden has reportedly acknowledged that the coming days will be critical to salvaging his candidacy.

We covered the first Biden-Trump debate of the 2024 campaign in a special Friday Edition.

SCOTUS allows laws against homeless encampments. Jul 03, 2024
    Show notes

City of Grants Pass v. Johnson. On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 along ideological lines to uphold ordinances in the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, that outlaw sleeping and camping in public places while using materials like blankets, pillows, or cardboard boxes for warmth or shelter. The decision overturns a lower court’s determination that such laws are unconstitutional and grants greater authority to local governments to address homelessness in their communities. The Supreme Court’s decision returns the case to the lower courts, which will consider separate arguments about Grants Pass’s laws.

We covered the 9th Circuit’s ruling here and recapped oral arguments at the Supreme Court here.

SCOTUS grants Trump partial immunity. Jul 02, 2024
    Show notes

Trump v. United States. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that former President Donald Trump is entitled to immunity from federal prosecution for his official actions while in office. The decision is the first Supreme Court ruling to assert that former presidents are shielded from criminal charges for actions deemed to be within their constitutional authority, though it also clarified that presidents do not have immunity for unofficial acts. The ruling, which fell along ideological lines, left open the possibility that special counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election can continue. Lower courts will now decide whether Trump’s conduct in that case constituted official or unofficial acts, but the decision makes it unlikely that Smith’s case concludes before the presidential election.

You can read our coverage of this case — including the previous rulings and a recap of oral arguments — here, here, and here.

SCOTUS overturns Chevron. Jul 01, 2024
    Show notes

The end of Chevron deference. On Friday, the Supreme Court overruled the court’s 1984 decision in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, which deferred to the judgment of federal agencies in interpreting statutory text to create regulations based on ambiguous laws. The 6-3 ruling fell along ideological lines, with the court’s six Republican-appointed justices in the majority. The decision is expected to shift the balance of power between the executive and judicial branches while compelling Congress to more specifically address policy issues when creating new laws.
