In the messages, various leaders of Young Republican chapters across the country joked about planting fake stories to smear rival GOP candidates, used racial epithets to refer to black people, and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler. Those implicated in the texts reportedly represent chapters in New York, Kansas, Arizona, and Vermont.

Week three of the government shutdown. Oct 21, 2025
    Show notes

On Tuesday, the federal government shutdown entered its 21st day, with Republican and Democratic lawmakers at an impasse over a deal to reopen the government. The shutdown is now the longest full government shutdown in U.S. history; only the 35-day partial funding lapse in 2018–2019 lasted longer. On Monday, the Senate failed to pass a GOP-backed funding bill for the 11th time.

Trump grants George Santos clemency. Oct 20, 2025
    Show notes

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced he had commuted the sentence of former Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who was serving a seven-year prison sentence for fraud and identity theft. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” adding, “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated.” Santos’s attorney said he was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey, on Friday night. The commutation does not expunge Santos’s criminal record, but he will not be required to pay over $370,000 in restitution to his victims.

Is the Voting Rights Act in danger? Oct 16, 2025
    Show notes

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case challenging the congressional map Louisiana adopted in 2022, the second time the court has considered the case. The challenge centers on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965, which prohibits voting laws or districting practices that give members of a racial group less opportunity than others to elect candidates of their choice. During arguments, the court’s conservative justices signaled their support for narrowing or overturning Section 2.

The conversion therapy case before the Supreme Court. Oct 14, 2025
    Show notes

Chiles v. Salazar. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a challenge to a Colorado law banning “conversion therapy,” or psychiatric treatment intended to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, for minors. A majority of justices appeared more sympathetic to the plaintiff, a licensed counselor practicing conversion talk therapy who says the law discriminates against her based on her views. Other justices indicated their support for sending the case back to a lower court to review the law under a higher standard of scrutiny.

INTERVIEW: Will Kaback talks with CNN's Air Safety Analyst David Soucie Oct 11, 2025
    Show notes

Back in January, there was a tragic incident where an American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. A few days after the crash, we published a special report on the incident. About a week later, we published a deep dive Friday edition about the crash, trying to make sense of how something like that could happen. And one of the people who I spoke to was David Soucie, who is CNN's air safety analyst. He's a former FAA safety inspector and the author of a book called Safer Skies, which is about the past and the future of airline safety. So overall, he is an expert on these questions.

He provided a lot of invaluable insight into the crash when we spoke back in January. But I hadn't heard from him since then. We hadn't had a chance to reconnect. That is until this week when he reached out to me over email to let me know that he had some information about the impact of the government shutdown on the air safety space and the way that it was impacting airlines. So I jumped at the opportunity to speak with him. We had a really interesting conversation about some of the reports that have come out this week of air traffic controllers allegedly taking sick days to get out of work when they're not being paid. And also, more broadly, about whether air safety is actually being impacted by this government shutdown and how it could be impacted if the shutdown continues for days or weeks more.

I'm sure this is a topic that's top of mind for anybody who is planning to fly in the near future. But also if you're just somebody who flies in general, David and I talked about some of the changes that have been made to the air safety infrastructure since the DC crash nine months ago, how he feels the overall infrastructure is in the United States right now, and whether the government shutdown could exacerbate any existing issues. So if you've read any of these reports from airports across the country experiencing flight delays and cancellations because of significant air traffic controller shortages, and you've wondered, it safe to fly right now? David offers a great perspective on where we're at and the level of concern that you should have.
