Florida's African American Studies debate. Jan 25, 2023
    Show notes

On Friday, the Florida Department of Education said it will not allow an Advanced Placement (AP) class on African American Studies to be taught in the state's public schools. The class was developed by the College Board as one of its many classes high school students could take to gain college credits. The Department of Education says the class violates a Florida law which Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) introduced to fight what he describes as "woke indoctrination" in schools. Plus, a follow-up story on Rep. George Santos (R-NY) and some good news for veterans' health.

    Show notes

Last week, a committee in San Francisco released a reparations proposal for the city that includes $5 million for each qualifying Black resident of the city. The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee (AARAC) was formed in 2020 and was asked to develop a plan to address institutional harms African Americans have had to face. Plus, a question about being scared to air my "real" opinion and an important story the Supreme Court leak.

More Biden classified documents. Jan 23, 2023
    Show notes

Biden's classified documents. We first covered this story on January 12. Hours after we published that piece, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Biden's handling of classified documents, creating a historical anomaly where both the current and former president (Donald Trump) are now under simultaneous special counsel investigations. Plus, a correction, some reviews from Friday, reader feedback and a question about the fentanyl crisis and efforts to address it.

A gas stove ban (or not). Jan 19, 2023
    Show notes

Gas stoves. Last week, Richard Trumka Jr., a commissioner on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said his agency was considering a ban on gas stoves amid rising concerns about harmful indoor air pollutants. “This is a hidden hazard,” Trumka Jr. told Bloomberg. "Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.” The comments set off a firestorm.

Rep. George Santos (R-NY). In the November election, Santos flipped New York's 3rd District red, defeating Democrat Robert Zimmerman. But the newly elected member of the House is now facing increasing pressure to resign after revelations that much of what Santos told the public about his life was untrue or cannot be verified. The debt ceiling, explained. Jan 17, 2023
    Show notes

The debt ceiling (or debt limit). During the recent debate over the next Speaker of the House, one of the key impending issues was the debt ceiling, or debt limit. Several conservative House members used the upcoming deadline to raise the debt limit to leverage a commitment from Kevin McCarthy to force spending cuts by Congress. Since being elected Speaker, McCarthy has confirmed that Republicans won't raise the debt limit without changes to federal spending, including programs like Social Security and Medicare.
