"Baila, Baila, Baila"...Tamarindo's Music Episode! Oct 15, 2019
    Show notes

On this special musical episode of Tamarindo, we have not one, but two very talented #WOC artists that are blending genres, while honoring their R & B roots to create some beautiful sounds.
Before we get to our interviews with our special guests Abrina and Malia, we reflect on the #Urban Latinx music takeover that is fully entrenching itself in mainstream American culture at the moment. We also throw a few Latinx songs in the basura that we think are a little tooo played out. Let us know if you agree with us or what you would put in the basura instead!
    About our guests:
Abrina is a singer-songwriter, originally from San Diego, who’s upcoming EP “Sunset Cliff” opens with a Latin trap single and is followed by nostalgic tracks that bring together the influences of SoCal R&B, Hip hop, and Latin music. Find her on all streaming platforms and on instagram: @abrinamusic
Malia is an alternative soul/r&b singer, guitarist and songwriter. Her last project ‘Late Bloomer’ has amassed millions of streams and has been featured on the Fox show “Star” with Queen Latifah and the upcoming ‘Truth be Told’ starring Octavia Spencer. She’s toured with Syd from The Internet and is a part of the artist collective Soulection. Her sounds are often called healing and her newest EP titled Ripe is one of her rawest and most soulful deliveries yet. Find her on all streaming platforms and on instagram: @maliavibes

We Belong! Mental Health Access in the Latinx Community Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk about #therapy and how it can help when we experience #trauma, a timely conversation with recent events that have targeted the #LatinxCommunity.
On August 3rd, the people of El Paso experienced one of the most harrowing attacks in recent history at the hands of a White supremacist that specifically targeted immigrants and Latinos.
We pause to reflect on that tragedy and other recent policy changes that are adversely affecting our community. As we referenced, this article outlines how the Trump Administration is deliberately attempting to change the face of America so it looks less....well...brown.
At a time when folks in the White House want to tell our community that we don't belong, we know how important it can be to access mental health resources. As part of our commitment to our community's well being, we talk to the creator of the #LatinxTherapy podcast and directory, trauma Psychotherapist, Adriana Alejandre. We discuss trauma, the barriers to accessing therapy, and how Adriana's work is building a community of practice for Latinx therapists.
You'll hear us talk about #affirmations, which are statements that are designed to create self-change and how using these can remind us all that #WeBelong. We're including a link on how to create and use affirmations so you can try it out for yourselves: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/smart-relationships/201403/affirmations-the-why-what-how-and-what-if
Latinx Therapy, is an internationally recognized directory and bilingual podcast that destigmatizes #mentalhealth & provides education to combat stigma through technology and mental health services.
Lastly we are excited to announce our first Tamarindo Calma event! We will be leading a #free #workout and #meditation for our LA listeners on Saturday, September 14th at Vista Hermosa Park. To RSVP, just click on the link.

Reproductive Rights for All! Jul 01, 2019
    Show notes

On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk about what is at stake when it comes to #reproductiverights if we don’t take action to stop the intentional work taking place to dismantle #RoevWade. We feature Danielle Perez, stand-up
comedian, writer, and actress who is leveraging her platform to protect #AbortionAccess. She tells us about the YellowHammer Fund: yellowhammerfund.org which provides funding for anyone seeking care at one of Alabama’s three independent abortion clinics. Brenda also references many resources from the National Organizations for Women or now.org so check them out for ways you can protect reproductive rights for all.
And since all this talk about Republicans rolling back the clock on women’s rights can produce anxiety, for our #calmamoment, Ana Sheila shows us how to get started with #journaling, a powerful tool that can improve overall well being and combat anxiety and stress.
Lastly, we announce that Tamarindo is taking a short summer break. Ana Sheila will be taking a mini-sabbatical in Mexico while Brenda gears up for the UnidosUS Annual Conference happening August 3-6 in San Diego. Keep up with us on our socials (handles below) as we’ll be doing some appearances in our stories and instagram-live! Why #Latinx Representation is More Important Than Ever! May 23, 2019
    Show notes

We asked Dr. Ana-Christina Ramon, co-author of the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, Director of Research & Civic Engagement, UCLA Social Sciences, what letter grade she would give Hollywood on their representation of Latinx characters and stories and surprise surprise, Hollywood flunked! She says it she would give Hollywood a D+. “Out of the top 8 roles in films and TV, 5 to 7 percent are portrayed by Latinx actors,” Dr. Ramon says. She goes on to say that “When 18 percent of the population is Latinx, this significant underrepresentation is inexcusable!” We agree with Dr. Ana-Christina Ramon, and so on this episode of Tamarindo, Ana Sheila and Brenda talk about why #Latinx representation is important and share examples of Latinx stories to celebrate and some that make us cringe. We are especially excited to drop this episode today when trailblazing STARZ Original Series VIDA is back for its second season! #VIDA is a show for the Latinx community and we know you’ll love it. We even heard a little bit about her experience as a writer on the show from Jennifer Castillo. We hope you enjoy this episode of Tamarindo and share it with a friend!

Then we introduce you to our good friend, Rebecca Pleitez, Deputy Director of Grassroots advocacy for the California Primary Care Association, and mommy-in-chief of two, with one on the way.

Although Rebecca has only been a mom for a few years, her experience is unique in that she’s at times been an entrepreneur, military mom, traveling mom, stay at home mom you name it. As you’ll hear, Rebecca is one of the most authentic people we know so we invited her to keep it real with you'all about #momlife.

A lifelong advocate, Rebecca has been involved in #healthpolicy work and local government, most recently supporting California Assemblywoman Carrillo’s entry into office.
