Franchise Player: Separating fact from fiction with Lane Kiffin and Auburn Nov 14, 2022
    Show notes

If internet rumblings are to be believed, the smoke surrounding Lane Kiffin and Auburn is nearing a fire.

What we do actually know, though? If nothing else, as the Ole Miss Spirit was hearing on Monday, Kiffin is certainly a leading candidate. Auburn appears focused on four: Kiffin, Hugh Freeze, Matt Rhule and Joe Whitt, Jr.

Ben Garrett and David Johnson try to separate fact from fiction in this edition of Franchise Player, a site-crossover podcast of the Ole Miss Spirit (On3) and Inside the Rebels (247).

Here’s a brief exchange in the nearly one-hour conversation.

Ben: Now that Ole Miss’ SEC West title hopes have been dashed after the loss to Alabama on Saturday, (Lane Kiffin’s status) is now the story. Even if they beat Arkansas and Mississippi State, they’re going to go play in an exhibition game in Orlando (the Citrus Bowl).

David: Correct. Just reading and talking to some trusted Auburn reporters, I don’t think there’s much doubt at all Lane Kiffin’s the No. 1 target.

Ben: Don’t think Keith Carter doesn’t have a list. I know he has a list. If the worst-case scenario happens, you’re talking about a week-long coaching search, because December 5 is when the transfer window opens up.

David: He’s working both sides of the coin. He’s doing everything he can right now, I’m sure, to keep Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss. At the same time, he’s got lines out. He’s got to have.

Postgame: Ole Miss is on the precipice. Lane Kiffin just needs to stick around. Nov 13, 2022
    Show notes

Ole Miss football is so close to being an elite team.

The Rebels (8-2, 4-2 SEC) lost to Alabama (7-2, 5-2) on Saturday. Bryce Young is really good. Why Ole Miss didn’t run Quinshon Judkins on its final plays remains a mystery. LSU clinched the SEC West with a win over Arkansas and the Ole Miss loss, meaning the Rebels blew their latest best shot at the program’s first-ever trip to the SEC title game in Atlanta.

But Ole Miss football is so close to being an elite team. As long as Lane Kiffin sticks around.

Ben Garrett and David Johnson discuss in this postgame edition of Franchise Player, a site-crossover podcast of the Ole Miss Spirit (On3) and Inside the Rebels (247).

Mike Clement and the biggest MLB Draft risks in Ole Miss' Top 10 2023 recruiting class Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

Ole Miss baseball on Wednesday signed the No. 6 recruiting class in the country.

The Rebels — who all this week have been celebrating the program’s first-ever national championship won in June — signed 19 high school recruits, including five ranked in the Top 100 nationally by Perfect Game.

Among them is Oxford products Cooper Pratt, an infielder, and Campbell Smithwick, a catcher. They’re also two of the biggest MLB Draft risks, according to Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement.

“The good thing is two of the biggest draft risks are guys from Oxford,” Clement said. “Cooper Pratt is a 6-4, 200-pound shortstop. Kind of a similar body type to (Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez). He has completely shot up draft boards here over the summer and kind of blown up. Was in the (Perfect Game) All-American game. But I think it will take a lot for him not to come to Ole Miss and play.

“Similar to him, Campbell Smithwick, who’s a senior at Oxford High School. Left-handed-hitting catcher. He’s one of the best catchers in the country. Both of those guys are really, really strong on their commitment to academics and coming to school. But that’s easy to say right now. Everybody’s got a price, and that’s the hard part about recruiting top recruits in college baseball. Not everybody shows up.”

A few pitchers are worth following, too.

“On the pitching side of things, there’s a kid named Zander Mueth, from outside of St. Louis, the right-handed pitcher,” Clement continued. “Up to like 98 miles an hour, 99 miles an hour (with his fastball). Big, big arm, who I certainly think will have a chance to be a really good grab. Josh Knoth, a kid from New York that we picked up late, who’s also in the Perfect Game All-American game (and) has a really good arm. He’ll run it up there in the mid-to-upper 90s.

“Those four guys are probably the biggest draft risks that we have, but I think they’re all really, really solid in their commitment and excited about coming to school here, too.”

Clement has the full breakdown of the class in this edition of Talk of Champions, as well as his first-person account of all the festivities this week — the latest being the team’s trip to the governor’s mansion in Jackson on Thursday.

Ole Miss will also close out the fall intrasquad season with the Pizza Bowl on Friday.

Hit That Line: Ole Miss and Alabama isn't quite the SEC West showdown we were hoping for. That's OK. Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

No. 11 Ole Miss hosts No. 9 Alabama in what should be a picture-perfect fall day in Oxford, Miss., for the biggest game of the season for Lane Kiffin's Rebels on Saturday.

Ole Miss is coming off a bye, while the Crimson Tide is licking its wounds after an overtime loss to LSU.

Sure, it's Alabama and big, bad Nick Saban, but this is the first time in 12 years an Alabama team has two losses before the Iron Bowl. Can the Crimson Tide get up for this one? How will the crowd be at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS?

Something has to give here. Ole Miss’ potent rushing attack is going head-to-head against Alabama's Top 10 rush defense.

    Who will be the X-factor?

Will it be Jaxson Dart creating with his legs and making big throw to move the sticks? Will a Rebel defender step up and slow down the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Bryce Young? Or could Jonathan Cruz find himself in a potential game-winning situation?

Zach Berry and Co. have the full breakdown in this edition of Hit That Line. They also provide their 12 locks of the week, as they continue to claw back to try and get to .500 on the year.

Tune in and fade/tail at your own risk.

‘I’ve had this game circled’: Ole Miss looking to maintain contender status against Alabama Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Jordan Watkins received a hero’s welcome in his return to Louisville over the weekend.

No, not the college he left in the offseason to join Ole Miss football.

He was back at his old high school, Butler (Ky.) Traditional, for its playoff showdown with Bullitt East. The Bears, unfortunately, had their season come to an end, but Watkins, throughout, was swarmed by countless kids and other hometown well-wishers.

“That’s always nice,” Watkins said. “It lets me know I made somewhat of an impact while I was there and the home fanbase kind of roots for you a little bit.”

A day later, however, he was right back to work.

Ole Miss (8-1, 4-1 SEC) was off last week, but on Saturday hosts Alabama (7-2, 4-2) at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. The Crimson Tide is fresh off a loss at LSU (7-2, 5-1), meaning the Rebels are looking to keep pace in the SEC West chase rather than seize first-place control outright.

“We all know what’s at stake,” Watkins said. “We got a little bit of a race going on (but) we just want to go 1-0. ‘Bama just happens to be the next team on the schedule.

“Right now we’re playing some really good football. The team’s super focused and super excited to get out and get in this type of environment and go out and perform in front of our home crowd. It’s been about three weeks since we’ve played in front of our home crowd.”

Hear everything Watkins had to say, including the team’s response to recent outside noise, in this edition of Wat’s Life.

‘A must-win for both of us’: Stage set for Ole Miss-Alabama. Back to Powe Corner! Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Jerrell Powe, an all-time Rebel football great, will never be able to bring himself to pick against Ole Miss.

But even Powe recognizes the challenge the Rebels face on Saturday, when they host Alabama at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. While the Crimson Tide isn’t the same dominant force it’s been for almost two decades, Bryce Young and Co. aren’t a great matchup for Ole Miss.

The Rebels have struggled with mobile quarterbacks all year (LSU’s Jayden Daniels put five total touchdowns on them in their only loss of the year), and Young, a former Heisman Trophy winner, is inarguably one of the best in the country.

“We struggle against guys that have mobility,” Powe said, in this edition of Powe Corner, in association with Talk of Champions. “This guy, he can beat you in the pocket or he can get outside the pocket and beat you. We’re going to have our hands full.

“We’ve got to get him off the spot. If we can find a way to get Bryce Young off the spot and contained and those guys do a good job on the back end, we’ve definitely got a chance. But we’re definitely going to have to outscore them. The offense can’t make any mistakes. Every time we take the field, we’ve got to get something positive out of it.”

Powe believes Ole Miss will have to play its best and most complete game of the year to have a chance.

Of course, the Rebels don't really have any other choice but to win if they hope to keep their SEC title and College Football Playoff hopes alive. Ole Miss no longer control its postseason destiny following LSU’s win over Alabama; the Tigers hold the tiebreaker should both teams finish with just one SEC loss.

But Powe is convinced LSU gets knocked off this weekend.

“Arkansas is fixin’ to beat LSU,” he said. “I guarantee it.”

Daytime Fireworks: Something's gotta give between Ole Miss and Alabama on Saturday Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

The pressure is on for Alabama this week, and Ole Miss is fresh off a bye.

    Something's gotta give.

Zach Berry (Ole Miss Spirit/On3) and David Brandt (Associated Press) have the full breakdown in this edition of Daytime Fireworks, including their thoughts on a unique matchup of Ole Miss’ potent rushing attack against an Alabama team in search of answers following an overtime loss on the road to LSU.

Kickoff between Ole Miss (8-1, 4-1 SEC) and Alabama (7-2, 4-2) is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.

Can Lane Kiffin and Co. stay within striking distance? Or will Saturday be just another footnote in the decorated history of Nick Saban, inarguably one of the greatest coaches the sport has ever seen?

The one-two punch of running backs Quinshon Judkins and Zach Evans is key.

Four-star 2023 safety Jamel Johnson could be a pick-up opportunity for Ole Miss football Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

Four-star 2023 safety and Ole Miss priority target Jamel Johnson de-committed from Texas on Monday.

Johnson — who’s ranked as the No. 294 player in the country, as well as the No. 28 safety — could be a pick-up opportunity for the Rebels, as Ole Miss Spirit recruiting analyst Zach Berry explains in this edition of Talk of Champions.

“He’s close with Braxton Myers, Ole Miss cornerback commitment from Coppell, Texas,” Berry said. “I think Ole Miss is poised to land him.

“Just de-committed on Monday, so he hasn’t set an announcement date or anything, but I think Ole Miss, right now, is the team to beat for him. The offer sheet is pretty loud. Ole Miss is in a good spot.”

Ole Miss is also bringing in its most star-studded group of visitors to date, including four-star running back Chris Johnson. The Ole Miss Spirit (On3) has the latest.

Franchise Player: The stakes have changed for Ole Miss' showdown with Alabama. Just win, baby. Nov 06, 2022
    Show notes

So much for a 2014 Ole Miss-Alabama redux.

The Crimson Tide over the weekend lost at LSU, meaning the stakes have changed when Alabama rolls into Oxford on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.

LSU controls the SEC West and holds the tiebreaker over Ole Miss. Even if the Rebels win out, they could still fall short of reaching the SEC title game in Atlanta, Ga., for the first time in program history.

    It's 2003 all over again.

The directive now is to keep pace and get some help. Both Ole Miss (Alabama, at Arkansas, Mississippi State) and LSU (at Arkansas, UAB, at Texas A&M) have three games remaining. The Rebels were always going to have to buck history and win out anyway.

Ben Garrett and David Johnson discuss in this edition of Franchise Player, a site-crossover podcast of the Ole Miss Spirit (On3) and Inside the Rebels (247).

Plus, thoughts on Auburn's coaching search, including the latest on the potential candidacies of Lane Kiffin and Hugh Freeze.
