    Show notes

Samantha Josephson, a 21-year-old University of South Carolina student, was murdered in March 2019 after mistakenly getting into a car she believed was her Uber outside a Columbia bar. Nathaniel Rowland, the driver, activated childproof locks to trap her, then kidnapped and stabbed her more than 100 times, later dumping her body 65 miles away in rural South Carolina. Rowland was swiftly arrested and convicted of murder, kidnapping, and weapon possession, receiving a life sentence with the judge calling the attack one of the “most severe” he’d ever seen. The case spurred major safety reforms for rideshare apps nationwide, including the creation of “Sami’s Law”.

    Show notes

His crimes left at least six dead and many wounded, but he was never caught or identified. The killer famously sent a taunting letter to the local newspaper, claiming he’d spare any household playing jazz music on a particular night—prompting New Orleans to fill the streets with music in one of history’s strangest attempts at appeasing a murderer.

55 | Dukes of Murder: Tara Grinstead Mar 26, 2019
    Show notes

Tara Grinstead, a 30-year-old high school teacher and former beauty queen from Ocilla, Georgia, vanished from her home in October 2005 and wasn’t found, sparking one of the biggest missing-person searches in the South. In 2017, Ryan Duke was arrested and confessed to breaking in to steal money for drugs, strangling her when caught, and—along with former classmate Bo Dukes—burning her body in a pecan orchard. However, Duke later recanted, blaming Dukes instead, and at trial Duke was acquitted of murder and convicted only of concealing Grinstead’s death, receiving a 10-year prison sentence while Dukes got 25 years for helping cover up the crime and burning Tara’s body. To this day, some details remain unknown and most of Tara’s remains have never been recovered.
