Talk Heathen 07.24 with Richard Gilliver and Doctor Ben Jun 19, 2023
    Show notes

In today’s episode of the Talk Heathen, Richard Gilliver and Doctor Ben sort out patterns that look like creation, free will based determinism, and the reliability of Paul’s writings.
Guru in India argues that god must exist because we would not be around if god did not exist. Does the creator need to be a living thing? Why do we need a living being to create us? Instead of using the term, “created”, why don’t we just use the term, “come into existence”? Where in a rock is there evidence of creation? We don’t know what caused this process to happen, but it is a stretch to conclude that this is the same as when humans design things. In order to maintain the idea of a living creator, one must have a shallow mindset. Redefining examples does not make your original point correct. Not everything that has a pattern, has to have a creator.
Chris in WV claims that relativity tells us the future existed at the moment of the big bang and we also existed during the big bang so therefore we have free will existing with destiny which means god is not responsible for atrocities. There are some cases where humans have no choice because there are biological factors leading up to their decisions. If god is the one who made brains work in antisocial ways such as not feeling guilt, how does god have the right to punish these people? How do these people have complete free will? When these people are not in the equation, does the argument still work? How can you make a spiritual claim and then say, “scientifically speaking”? No matter how you cherry pick, religion still has harmful things within it. Why doesn’t the moral instructional book or religion tell us not to own slaves?
Christian in GA, asks what standard of evidence the hosts use to see if the Gospels are reliable. We take the approach where we don't accept it to be true until we see evidence and the baseline is not believing. How do we know that Paul’s trip to Demascus happened and not some other kind of trip? When hallucinating, do things happen the way they are described? Validity is not affected by how many people believe something or how many times it is said. What is it that convinces you that the gospels are true? What evidence substantiates the rising from the dead? Wouldn’t people have known about tactics writers used to convince us? People dying for their beliefs do not make the claims true. Can you apply the same level of scrutiny to the Bible that you apply to the Quran?
Jim in OH asks Richard about a past call involving Buddhism. This is more of a philosophy than a religion. Richard clarifies his position by stating that there are some gods within this system, just not creator gods.
Thank you for tuning in and please remember to thank our essential workers! Question of the week is: What would you have ordered at The Last Supper and why?

    SHOW NOTES
Hello and welcome to Talk Heathen! This week, Doctor Ben and Jimmy Jr. are here to do Satan’s work!
Solomon from CA, a former Jehova’s witness, has seen the recent decline of religion by younger generations and wants to know where our hosts see religion going in the future.
Felix from GA is calling to argue that Christianity is actually a progressive religion. While it's nice that certain denominations or churches are adopting progressive messaging and stances, Christianity as a whole isn’t pushing the boundaries of progressive values. Is it really progressive, or just a means to survival?
Cam from MI wants to know if pride month really is necessary outside of a historical remembrance context. As long as there is someone who thinks the world would be a better place if we went back to a time when queer people’s voices and needs in society were out of sight out of mind, then pride is absolutely necessary.
Kathy from IL wants to discuss their experience visiting a Unitarian Universalist church and how different it is from every other more traditional church.
Zabi from MI is a former theist and wants to discuss how their deconversion altered how friends and family view them.

Talk Heathen 07.20 with Secular Rarity and Tom Benson May 21, 2023
    Show notes

In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Secular Rarity is joined by Tom Benson. You can find more from Tom at https://howeverwegothere.com/
First caller is John in TX and asks why we do this show. Talking to callers like you! We want to engage in conversations to affect change. The call morphs to John claiming god is a philosophical, not scientific, conversation. Well, religion causes actual harm in the world. We just don’t have any good reasons to believe in any god.
Matt in CA announces the Secular Student Alliance National Conference on June 16-18 in St Louis, MO on the University of St Louis campus. Get your tickets NOW at https://secularstudents.org/conference/2023conference/
Nathan in FL presents instinctual evidence of a god. He claims that people, even atheists, calling out “oh my god” is evidence of a god. That is a very localized expression, other religions often call out something different. Those religions are often contradictory to christianity.
Rob in CO doesn’t understand why theists have difficulty seeing the bad stuff that comes with their religious beliefs. People tend to lean to simple answers that don't take much work. All we can do is challenge those beliefs and hope we can make a change.
Jay in the USA asks who or what is responsible for world wide education. People have passed along methods to further education and eliminate fallacious thinking.
Rob in NC brings up examples of the fine tuning argument. Science communicators tend to tone down their public presentations and minimize insider jargon when presenting to the public. We don’t understand everything about the universe and postulate hypotheses to investigate.
Thank you for tuning in today! The new question of the week is: If god favors humans, why are they so _____ ?

Mike from Canada claims there is reason to believe that Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is coming true.
Sven from WA asks if all metaphysical beliefs are by their property of not being physically judged, are intellectually dishonest.
Xavier from FL asks if the story that God stopped the sun for Israel is a claim that is falsifiable. Ummm, no. No, it isn’t.
Muji from Europe claims that Islam is capable and required to solve all world problems, even if the religion isn’t true.
Alex from CA wants to know if the hosts have a goal, subconscious or intentional, to convince people into becoming Atheists.

Talk Heathen 07.17 with ObjectivelyDan and Blind Limey May 01, 2023
    Show notes

Blind Limey makes his live debut in the studio today with Objectively Dan! They appeal to the higher power of AI when dealing with street preachers who tell us the origin of morality while being possessed by relatives.
Janet from FL knows we don’t have evidence for Christianity but believes because there has not been something that has convinced her not to. Introspection is hard and the fact that you have engaged in this already is fantastic. What does it mean to have not seen evidence to not believe? Just because we can’t tell you how the universe started doesn't mean that we default to the Christian reason.
Lisa in Canada asks why we are tempted to believe there is some sort of special involvement when something unusual happens. Superstitions that point to our need for survival, self preservations, and hierarchies that we have developed cause us to tend to think that we are being helped in some way.
Arlindo in the UK asks about Chat GPT. We defer to those with more knowledge than us as one of our arguments. Chat GPT is just a language model that puts together words that we like, and not some form of intelligence with beliefs.
Matias in Finland lets us know there are many street preachers that are obviously foreign operating in Finland, and wants to know what to do with them. You may try street epistemology, but you might find they are not worth your time. Sometimes, when these people go to Europe to preach, it can be a step in the right direction if you engage in a conversation with them, eventually leading to deconversion.
Chris in PA asks how morality is found by atheists. Morality is something that comes naturally and from our ability to community, thrive, and survive. How do you determine that your god actually is moral? If god were to kill a bunch of people unnecessarily for them not being up to his standards, would that be a bad thing to do? Christianity justifies terrible things because they feel an obligation to a god. If any other authority threatened you with death to get you to obey, would you accept it? If Hitler were your dad, would you still follow Biblical law and “honor” him as your father?
Gabriel from the audience asked what the dumbest thing was that someone thought atheists believe. Blind Limey said someone thought he was afraid of the truth. The funniest thing that happened to Dan was that a flat earther thought he was paid by NASA to say the earth is round.
Harry in South Africa believes he saw a relative possessed by an ancestor. How can you tell that it was not a delusion or act? Anytime anything like this has been investigated, it has turned out to be a natural explanation or a sham.
Thank you for tuning in this week! The question of the week is: What is a little known reason god sends people to hell?

Talk Heathen 07.16 04-23-2023 with Richard Gilliver and Doctor Ben Apr 23, 2023
    Show notes

    SHOW NOTES
In today’s episode of the Talk Heathen, Richard Gilliver and Doctor Ben take on callers with a broad spectrum of topics.
First caller is Erin in FL who views god pragmatically, does not believe Occam’s Razor is a great argument when uncovering the truth, and believes the idea of an afterlife is good. It is not always a good idea to use Occam’s Razor because we need to be aware of unlikely things. Could you see some problems with someone believing in an afterlife that doesn’t exist? Could this belief be used to avoid making real life decisions? The time to believe something is when we have sound evidence for it.
T in MO would like to talk about how the atheist response to the look at the trees argument validates any presumptions that theists might have about atheists being mean spirited people. Sometimes, the people who use this argument don’t realize how poor the argument is and in those cases, it is a good methodology to meet them where they are at. Most of the time, those who use this argument are practiced apologists who are using sleight of hand to dismiss any atheist response which is why you see the hard push backs from atheists against these arguments. Not everybody that wants to work together to discover the truth and there is a time and place to use aggressive responses.
Ray from IN wants to explain energies and let us know some secrets that we were all once great warriors that cycled through heaven because the devil made it to where death could come through heaven. Where do you find out about these things? Why do you think the Illuminati are fallen angels and what evidence do you have that they are not human beings?
Phoebe Rose in England has a friend that wants her to officiate their pagan handfasting wedding next week and as an atheist has no idea how to respond to this friend. Do you feel like you want to do this regardless of their beliefs? As long as you are comfortable doing this, there may not be a need to draw a hard line.
John in MT describes a study that shows how brain chemistry can influence every decision that we make and is evidence against the existence of the soul. If someone is claiming that the soul is supernatural and has influence on the natural world, there would not be unaccounted for brain chemistry. Having a debate on souls to begin with is granting far too much.
Zak in OK recently came out to their coworkers via email as trans. Some of the kids still use the term “miss” and draw Jesus symbols to place right next to the pride flag that was a gift from another student. The most fair thing to do is to leave up both symbols without letting the student gain control of everything.
Thank you for tuning in this week! The question of the week is: I know we aren’t intelligently designed because______.
