What is Country Music's Obsession with Blue Jeans?? with Ben Kronberg Jun 06, 2022

Show notes

The boys met up in comedian Ben Kronberg's (The Denver Comedy Lounge, Late Night with Seth Meyers) home in Denver to discuss a curious question: what is the deal with singing about blue jeans in modern country music? Danny, Tyler, and Ben attempt to identify the origins of denim in country, and trace how it turned into a full-blown, bro-country cliché by the mid-2000's.
They even put together a blue jeans playlist, if you dare to listen.

Show notes

Yeehaw! Take This Pod and Shove It has been around for 6 months! While we might've been doing this regardless of any listenership, hollering desperately into the digital void like a coupla mangy coyotes howling at the night sky, we are very thankful for all the support and encouragement from our listeners. We love ya, Shovelos!
In addition to giving some thank you's to our Shovelos and Patreon subscribers, Tyler and Danny cover some wild news involving Dolly Parton and Taco Bell, plus they introduce a new segment called SOME SONGS CONSIDERED, in which the boys give some recommendations for their favorite new music of the last year (some country music, some not!). Listen to the last half to hear what new tunes have caught their ears.

Show notes

This week Danny and Tyler are joined by Ashley Ray (@theashleyray, TV I Say with Ashley Ray podcast, HBO, Adult Swim) to discuss Beyoncé's venture into country music with "Daddy Lessons" from her groundbreaking album Lemonade. They also discuss the impact, power, and badass-ness of Beyoncé teaming up with The Chicks for the incredible "Daddy Lessons" remix.

Ashley—an expert on Beyoncé and Lemonade—breaks down how the album is about many things, including black womanhood, Beyonce’s roots in the South, finding independence, and healing the wounds caused by generational trauma. And "Daddy Lessons," uses country music to not only take on some of these themes, but to take us back in time to Bey's childhood. We also talk about Reba a lot!
Of course you know Beyoncé, but here's some recs from Ashley and your hosts:

22: "In The Jailhouse Now" by Webb Pierce, w/ Michael Timlin May 16, 2022

Show notes

This week Danny and Tyler discuss forgotten country superstar Webb Pierce, and his hit version of "In The Jailhouse Now." They're joined by comedian and Webb Pierce fan, Michael Timlin (Work Sucks, I Know! Podcast). Webb Pierce may be a new name to many, but the dude basically owned country music radio in the 50's, so there's a lot of fun stuff to unpack and talk about.
The boys discuss Webb's (in)famous extravagance, faking it 'til you make it, and the illusive origins of "In The Jailhouse Now."
Enjoying the podcast? We're listener supported! Support us on Patreon HERE!
Webb Pierce had almost 100 charted hits, so here's a few songs to recommendations to narrow things down, if you're new to Webb:
A Thousand Miles Ago (not on streaming!)
There Stands The Glass
Walking The Streets
Wondering
You’re Not Mine Anymore
I’m Walking the Dog
