54: "Highwayman" by The Highwaymen, w/ David Gborie May 23, 2023

Show notes

This episode is our version of The Avengers: Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson join together to form country music's most iconic supergroup. Though they wouldn't be officially known as The Highwaymen for several more years, their version of the vignette-filled story song not only defined the group but put them all back on the charts. This week David Gborie (All Fantasy Everything, Royal Crackers, Comedy Central) returns to the pod to discuss the enduring greatness and hilariously confusing lyrics of this outlaw classic.
A new bonus episode about the other supergroups and the writer behind "Highwayman" is dropping this week exclusively on our Patreon! Get access to it and more by supporting us on Patreon HERE!

Show notes

On a very special live recording of Take This Pod and Shove It at The Chief Comedy Festival, Danny and Tyler sat down with three of their comedian pals to discuss their gateway song to country music. Christie Buchele talked about the deceptively horny "Fishing in the Dark" by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Aaron Naylor discussed the gritty, lyrically stunning "Charleston Girl" by Tyler Childers. And Zach Peterson discussed the more-outlaw-than-outlaw "Longhaired Redneck" by David Allen Coe.

On today's episode we tried to write some hit country songs using Chat GPT and the results were.......well, you should listen to hear for yourself! Let's just say they were semi-sonic??

Danny and Tyler discuss the rollicking and decidedly-country "Please Don't Bury Me," and also explore Prine's origin story as a Chicago mailman, plus how his first few albums alone changed country and folk songwriting forever.
