    Show notes

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 82-72 win over Cornell at the JMA Dome on Wednesday night on Syracuse basketball postgame presented by Crouse Health.

Freshman Donnie Freeman (23 points+12 rebounds) and Elijah Moore (19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 3's) stepped up big for SU against the Big Red with SU's veterans struggling.

Brent also plays a clip from Syracuse coach Adrian Autry who was clearly irritated with his team's defensive effort and discusses how Eddie Lampkin's back issues will continue to be something to monitor on how Autry fills out his lineup. Lampkin did not start against Cornell in an effort to ease those back troubles.

Don McPherson on the past, present and future of SU football; Was Coach Jack right to call out fans? Nov 25, 2024
    Show notes

On this episode of Syracuse Sports presented by Crouse Health, Brent Axe addresses SU women's basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack calling out SU fans for not going to the JMA Wireless Dome in bigger numbers to support her team. Brent discusses if she was right to call out SU fans and what solution there is (if at all) to get more fans to the games.

Brent also chats with Orange QB legend Don McPherson, who finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1987. Axe and McPherson discuss Kyle McCord's seismic impact on the Orange in just one season, how SU will move on from the record-setting QB and if alumni relations with former players is improving under Fran Brown. Brent and Don also share memories and stories of former SU coach Dick MacPherson, who was recently inducted onto the Ring of Honor at the JMA Dome.

Kyle McCord continues to set records as Syracuse football gets by stubborn UConn: Bring on Miami Nov 24, 2024
    Show notes

Brent Axe and Chris Carlson chat live following Syracuse football's 31-24 win over UConn at the JMA Dome on Saturday.

SU quarterback Kyle McCord continues to chase down records. McCord broke the record for passing yards in a single season on Saturday (3,946). He is 54 yards away from becoming the program's first 4000-yard passer. He also tied the single-season record for passing TDs (26) and passed for 470 yards against UConn. That mark was just 13 aways from breaking SU's single-game passing mark (482).

Brent and Chris also discussed an odd "deception" penalty called on SU WR Trebor Pena on the sideline that wiped away a TD, why UConn was able to stay in the game, the upcoming big matchup against Miami (Fran Brown wants College GameDay to come to town!) and more.

Brent and Chris also reacted to opinions and questions from Syracuse Sports Insiders.

Syracuse basketball leaves Brooklyn empty-handed after loss to Texas Tech Nov 23, 2024
    Show notes

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 79-74 loss to Texas Tech on Friday night in Brooklyn.

The Orange leave the Legends Classic without a win and now fall to 3-2 on the season. Axe discusses how that is going to put undo pressure on the Orange to pickup a quality non-conference win against Tennessee or Maryland if it wants to pretend its still an NCAA Tournament contender.

Brent also discusses the key stats that lifted Texas Tech to the win, including assists and an unbelieveable low-rate of turnovers.

Brent also reacted to opinions and questions from Syracuse Sports Insiders.

#FreeThrowsMatter: Syracuse drops close game to Texas in Brooklyn Nov 22, 2024
    Show notes

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 70-66 loss to Texas in Brooklyn.

As Brent says often, #FreeThrowsMatter and SU's 9-of-18 performance at the charity stripe cost the Orange in a close loss to the Longhorns. That noted, SU looked as good in the 2nd half of this game as it has in any half this season and maybe gave SU fans hope it can run with some better teams on the schedule.

Axe also discussed some lineup changes Adrian Autry made in the 2nd half, how key Eddie Lampkin's energy has been to the Orange and what's holding back Chris Bell from contributing the way SU needs him to.

Brent also reacted to opinions and questions from Syracuse Sports Insiders.

Behind the scenes of Kiyan Anthony's commitment to Syracuse; Who will be SU's QB in 2025? Nov 21, 2024
    Show notes

On the latest episode of Syracuse Sports presented by Crouse Health, Brent Axe chats with syracuse.com basketball beat reporter Mike Waters on covering Kiyan Anthony's commitment to Syracuse.

Mike tells Brent what Kiyan's commitment party was like in Brooklyn's Red Hook District and his takeaways from speaking with Carmelo and LaLa Anthony. Mike and Brent also discuss what kind of impact Anthony can make on SU basketball when he arrives to Syracuse in 2025.

You can find videos shot by syracuse.com's Scott Trimble of Kiyan Anthony's commitment here https://www.youtube.com/@syracuseorangesports

Brent also starts to examine the question of who will be Syracuse football's quarterback in 2025. Is that quarterback currently on the roster (Michael Johnson Jr.? Jahkari Williams?), an incoming freshman (Luke Carney? Henry Belin?) or will Syracuse hit the transfer portal again to find its guy?

Syracuse Sports 2-for-1 postgame: Orange Football wins at Cal, SU Hoops has major defensive issues Nov 17, 2024
    Show notes

In a 2-for-1 postgame podcast special, Brent Axe recaps SU football's 33-25 win over Cal and SU basketball's 104-95 win over Youngstown State in 2OT.

Chris Carlson joins Brent from Berkeley for a postgame report on the football team's win. Brent then recaps what he thought was SUs most complete game of the season and what it means to get to a 7-3 record with two games to go.

On the basketball side, Brent was bewildered that Youngstown State became the third straight team to push Syracuse to the bringk and says that SU's defensive issues are an emergency for Adrian Autry and he has to make a lineup change (or two) to fix it with SU's schedule getting more competitive, starting with Texas on Thursday.

Syracuse struggled mightily on the defensive end again against the Raiders, just as it did against Le Moyne in the season opener. You'll also hear from Chris Bell, Elijah Moore and Eddie Lampkin on the win.
