Louisville shuts down JJ Starling and crushes Syracuse at the JMA Dome Jan 15, 2025

Brent Axe breaks down Syracuse basketball's 85-61 loss to Louisville at the JMA Dome.

Louisville completely shut down SU guard JJ Starling, who was held to four points on 1-of-7 shooting. The Orange really didn't have a Plan B on offense with Starling out of the mix and Donnie Freeman still absent from the lineup with a leg injury.

SU's defense wasn't much better as the Cardinals hit 12 3-pointers on the Orange with most of those coming from Chucky Hepburn, who had 24 points.

Brent also discussed the vibe (or lack there of) in the Dome with a listed crowd of 19,750 certainly being inflated.

Syracuse basketball uses late run to earn first road win of season over BC Jan 12, 2025

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 79-71 win over Boston College.

The Orange used a late 22-6 run and were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to earn its first road win of the season.

JJ Starling was one of first Syracuse players in double figures with 26 points. Eddie Lampkin added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kyle Cuffe gave SU a major lift off the bench in the second half, including two clutch 3-pointers.

Kyle McCord moves on: Who replaces him as Syracuse QB and the massive impact he made in one season Jan 10, 2025

Brent Axe reacts to the news that Syracuse Kyle McCord is moving on to the NFL and will no longer pursue a NCAA waiver for another season of college football.

McCord made a massive impact in one season at Syracuse, leading the nation with 4,779 passing yards. That set a Syracuse and ACC single-season passing mark. McCord also set a Syracuse record with 34 touchdowns in a single season.

With McCord's place on the Mt. Rushmore of Syracuse quarterbacks, Brent has early thoughts on the quarterback competition to replace him. Will Fran Brown look for another quarterback in the transfer portal or will the competition focus on LSU transfer Rickie Collins Jr., sophomore Jakhari Williams and senior Michael Johnson Jr. with freshman Luke Carney and Rich Belin also in the mix.

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-63 win over Bucknell as SU gets ready to begin its full-time ACC slate.

Brent discussed how SU continued to struggle from the 3-point line, shooting 1-of-11 distance in the 2nd half.

Encouraging signs from the win included Eddie Lampkin (18 pts, 11 rebs) and Donnie Freeman (15 pts, 11 rebs) both scoring double-doubles and SU's switch to using more zone press seemed to light a fuse on the defensive end.

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse football's 52-35 win over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.

The Orange offense gained over 600 yards against the Cougars, led by Kyle McCord's 453 passing yards with five touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Syracuse basketball suffers worst loss of season to Maryland in Brooklyn Dec 21, 2024

The 27-point loss was the worst of the season for the Orange, topping a 26-point loss to No.1 Tennessee. SU scored 17 points at halftime, its lowest total for a half of basketball all season.

Georgetown zones out Syracuse to win 100th-all-time meeting between old rivals Dec 15, 2024

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 75-71 loss to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the JMA Dome.

The listed attendance for Saturday's game was 17,18. While the fans that did go to the game were loud and created a great atmosphere for the 100th meeting of SU-Georgetown, that's a concerning number for SU's main rival in a series that routinely used to get 30,000+ into the Dome.

Georgetown ironically used a zone defense, the signature weapon of Jim Boeheim's tenure it had to face for so many years, to flummox the Orange on Saturday afternoon. Eddie Lampkin (18 points) and Jyare Davis (15 points) both had good offensive games inside, but the Orange defense struggled in the paint, get out-scored in that area 48-34.

Brent also discusses the continued struggles of Chris Bell in big games, who had just 3 points for Syracuse, and growing fan concerns about Adrian Autry's coaching methods.

Syracuse basketball's offense overcomes poor defense in win over Albany Dec 11, 2024

Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 102-85 over UAlbany at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night.

Tuesday's win was a matter of perspective. SU's offense scored over 100 points in regulation for the first time since 2016. Donnie Freeman had 24 points despite not starting the game. Jaquan Carlos continued to overcome his struggles with 12 points and 12 assists.

On the other hand, the Orange defense gave up 51 points in the second half and continued to have sustained defensive breakdowns.

Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 69-64 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.

The Orange failed to hit a 3-pointer in a game (0-9) for the first time since 2014 in South Bend which was a big factor in the loss along with SU's 16-of-24 mark at the #FreeThrowsMatter line.

Brent also discusses how SU head coach Adrian Autry is changing SU's lineup around like they were hockey lines and that is leading to a growing frustration with the SU fan base. Donnie Freeman (20 points 11 rebounds) and Jyare Davis (20 points) played well as did SU point guard Jaquan Carlos (8 points, 7 assists) to overcome some recent struggles.

There was one positive from SU's lackluster showing in Knoxville during a 96-70 loss to Tennessee and that was Elijah Moore scoring 24 points and continuing to develop as an exciting freshman on the roster.

Oh wait. There was one more thing. Chance Westry played for three minutes! He's a real guy!

As Brent discussed on the show, it was yet another embarrassing showing for SU in a prime national television spot. SU is 6-15 on ESPN or a broadcast network in the last seasons.

What is the #orangestandard that Autry professes to? Even he was saying in postgame that SU didn't play hard enough on defense and "fell apart." Syracuse football knocks off Miami in biggest comeback in program history Dec 01, 2024

Young guns lead the way for Syracuse in win over Cornell Nov 28, 2024

SU quarterback Kyle McCord continues to chase down records. McCord broke the record for passing yards in a single season on Saturday (3,946). He is 54 yards away from becoming the program's first 4000-yard passer. He also tied the single-season record for passing TDs (26) and passed for 470 yards against UConn. That mark was just 13 aways from breaking SU's single-game passing mark (482).

As Brent says often, #FreeThrowsMatter and SU's 9-of-18 performance at the charity stripe cost the Orange in a close loss to the Longhorns.
