June 17th, 1994 is remembered as one of the wildest days in recent American history. Arnold Palmer played his final round of golf at the 1994 U.S. Open. The 1994 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, got underway with opening ceremony appearances from President Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. The New York Rangers celebrated their 1994 Stanley Cup Finals victory with a ticker tape parade. Ken Griffey Jr. tied Babe Ruth for most home runs before June 30th. The New York Knicks and Houston Rockets squared off for a pivotal Game 5 of the 1994 NBA Finals.
And O.J. Simpson, charged with double homicide, ran from police, only to be tracked down by a news helicopter, which broadcast the chase live on TV for over 95 million viewers.

Before hopping into Game 4 of the 1994 NBA Finals, we give the series and NBA some social, historical and political context. We begin today’s episode with a continued discussion about the grizzly murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and the emergence of a primary suspect: former football star, actor and ad pitchman, O.J. Simpson.
And then we dive into the hoops.
The 1993-94 season culminated in a matchup between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, a series widely celebrated as a meeting of two of the game's great centers, Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing. The players had previously met before as collegiate athletes, as Ewing's Georgetown University bested Olajuwon's University of Houston 84-75 in the 1984 NCAA Championship game. The Knicks-Rockets series would ultimately be defined by it's rugged, low-scoring defensive style and unsung performances from key role-players.

As Covid-19 continues to spread at warp speed in the US, the NBA season is set to resume in a bubble from Disney World using a series of locked-down hotels, venues without fans in attendance and elaborate testing protocols for players. Why?

This week we're taking a break from the usual distractions to talk about more important issues: Black Lives Matter, police brutality, racism, the systematic oppression of black people and POC in the United States—a conversation sparked by the May 25th murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, who died in Minneapolis after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, pressed his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes. Floyd's death has led to historic global protests and calls for sweeping, fundamental reform.

To celebrate the big change, Chris and Ben draft early 90s television commercials for the adult fruit juice BoKu. The ads featured comedian Richard Lewis talking about the trials and tribulations of his life while holding a BoKu juice box, insisting the drink was suited more for adults than babies. Below are the pick timestamps.

Following a bitter match in the first round of the 1993 NBA Playoffs, the Knicks and Pacers squared off once again in 1994, this time in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now helmed by head coach Larry Brown, the new-look Pacers added Derrick McKey, rookie forward Antonio Davis, Byron Scott and Haywoode Workman to a core of Reggie Miller, Dale Davis and Rik Smits.
Meanwhile, the Knicks had lofty expectations of winning the NBA title, following the sudden retirement of Michael Jordan in October of 1993. After losing Doc Rivers to a knee injury in December, the team acquired Derek Harper from Dallas on January 6, 1994 to provide a defensive-minded veteran presence at point guard. Behind head coach Pat Riley, the Knicks continued to be led by Patrick Ewing, forwards Charles Smith, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason along with key reserves John Starks, Hubert Davis and Greg Anthony.
This week, Chris and Ben jump down the rabbit hole and revisit an NBA Classic, Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals between the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers.
