    Superduperstitious

A podcast about the paranormal, the credibility of the creepy, and the science of the spooky: Superduperstitious is a comedy podcast that looks at the mysterious and scary world of the weird and says, “Wait. What?” Hosts Wyatt Shell and Jake Withee use their science backgrounds to tease apart possible explanations for unexplained, supernatural, and otherwise strange phenomena.

It’s always bugs o’clock here at Superduperstitious, because why the hell not?

After some passing yeti news, Wyatt opens with an increasingly uncomfortable tale of giant spiders in Mozambique. Is the j’ba fofi really out there? If so, it may bite your butt and make you die. And if not, you can still learn about all the other unholy arachnid abominations that definitely DO crawl across our world right now AND PROBABLY RIGHT BEHIND YOU OH GOD DID YOU FEEL THAT ON YOUR LEG AHHHHHH.

Jake then takes to the air with rods, also known as sky fish, also known as solar entities, also known as SUPER REAL. Follow these mysterious creatures from their discovery in the mid-nineties all the way to their journey’s end approximately ten years later. It’s a good time. And definitely not a flying squid.

Guys, just because you caught someone eating a bird ONCE doesn’t give you the right to make that name follow them forever. Crank up your shutter speed and tune in for this week’s Superduperstitious!

    Episode 63 – Spontaneous Human Combustion: R.I.P. Lorraine Warren Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

Rainy day doldrums got you down? That’s no reason not to disrespect the dead!

This week’s theme is seemingly paranormal medical phenomena, and Jake opens with a description of near-death experiences. What happens if you go toward the light? IS there really a light to go toward? And is Macho Man Randy Savage really waiting for you at the end of it?

The boys then pay their respects to the late medium/demonologist/book and movie mogul Lorraine Warren (and the even later Ed Warren) in very, very tasteful fashion. It’s a struggle not to cry as they recount their favorite Warren cases, how totally real those cases were, and how much they’ve always seen the Warrens as upstanding members of society.

Wyatt finishes things off with the frightening and mysterious phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion. Can you really just suddenly become on fire? How long has this been happening to you? Is there a history of bursting into flames in your family? I’m going to recommend that you take two lit cigarettes to bed and telegraph me in the morning.

Grab a box of tissues and a fire extinguisher and STAY WITH US — IT’S NOT YOUR TIME YET! Instead, it’s time for another episode of Superduperstitious!

Episode 62 – We Pick Three for Six Betwixt Apr 20, 2019
    Show notes

It’s inexplicably deli time at Superdupersitious!

Wyatt and Jake take turns telling a bunch of random-ass cryptid tales, each one more chilling than the last. Did we say “chilling”? We meant “bonkers banana sandwich kookytown”. Learn all about a killer pancake; the completely logical thing you get when you combine an ape, dog, bear, lion, and rhinoceros; more bat stuff; and of course, the Grunch. Also bugs and a moat monster. And Shadowlands Roulette.

Get the best combo meal value you’ll ever find in a podcast, on this week’s episode of Superduperstitious!

    Episode 61 – The Kangaroo Event Apr 11, 2019
    Show notes

Any strange story is fair game this week, so the boys tackle some slightly more famous freak occurrences.

Jake kicks it off with some obligatory updates on the bat problems of the midwest, followed by a decidedly offbeat creature encounter from that same region in the 1970s. Meet the Enfield Horror, a creature of improbable anatomy and ill temper that terrorized a tiny Illinois town for a few weeks before vanishing forever, unless it’s still lurking there to this day (it’s not), because it was totally real the whole time (it wasn’t). You can shoot it, but it will just come back and loiter in your yard.

Wyatt then takes us to Siberia at the turn of the 20th century, where a massive explosion leveled enormous swathes of forest and baffled scientists for decades to come. Was it a meteor that exploded before landing? Did real scientists actually suggest that it was a miniature black hole magically appearing? And did they really publish that theory in the most respected journal in the world?

Keep an eye out for three-leggèd footprints, and don’t show any fear or surprise in Russia: it’s Superduperstitious time!

Episode 60 – At the Mountains of (March) Madness Apr 06, 2019
    Show notes

A two-year record-iversary, a 60th episode, AND the launch of a Patreon? That’s cause for celebration! Ideally in the form of a single elimination bracket championship tournament between cults (obviously).

That’s right, this ep is devoted entirely to the NCAAA championship showdown between the World and Global Divisions’ top cults, each vying to reign supreme. Join Wyatt and Jake as they explore the backgrounds of these bizarre and fascinating religious movements and determine whether each group has what it takes to win (after being forced into a cursed simulator, to iteratively exist in constant conflict, living and dying again and again over the course of 10,000 years).

Fill out your brackets and prepare for Templar relics, diaereses, secret planets, and much, much more on this Very Special Episode™ of Superduperstitious!

    Episode 59 – Crunch... Crunch... Yowie! Mar 28, 2019
    Show notes

Another year of podcasting means Jake and Wyatt are eager to get fully back on their bullshit. And back on their bullshit is exactly where they go this week.

Wyatt feeds his Sasquatch addiction with another trip Down Under, this time to look at the yowie of Australian lore. The eyewitnesses seem credible, the phylogeography has Jake more open minded, and you’d best believe everyone’s looking for that penis.

Next, Jake gets ghoulish once again, with a pair of related sightings posted to Reddit. While you refrain from calling anyone a copper nanotube, ponder this: what the goddamned hell was outside that window every night? And can we all agree to just put trail cameras everywhere at all times?

All this, plus a very important missive by a certain Fire Killer, on this episode of Superduperstitious!

Episode 58 – Beer-zebub, or How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Satan Mar 22, 2019
    Show notes

What’s the point believing in spirits and such if it doesn’t involve those spirits being super scary and wanting to mess with us? Thankfully, that’s what demons are for — and what this ep is all about!

Jake attempts to break the mold a bit with a non-Christian take on these dark forces, paying a visit to an Algonquin reservation and its spooky run-in with a malevolent entity a few years ago. Call it a kokogi, call it a window-tapping jerk — just don’t expect it to wipe that smug grin off its face. And feel free to just lock it in your cabin I guess.

Wyatt then digs into the history, psychology, and prevalence of the positively marvelous phenomenon that is demonic possession. Not “marvelous” in the sense of “wonderful” — unless it’s “wonderful” in the sense of “astounding”. And definitely “astounding” in the sense of “incredible”, but not “incredible” in the sense of “awesome”, except if it's “awesome” in the sense of “marvelous”.

Learn about Native Canadian approaches to dealing with the paranormal, a story you’ve maybe heard before, and hard truths about doughnut franchises, all on this week’s Superduperstitious!

    Episode 57 – Mist Opportunities Mar 16, 2019
    Show notes

It’s a weird world out there, full of rocks and clouds that want to eat you. But you’ll be safe with us here on Superduperstitious!

Wyatt talks up the Bennington Triangle, a decidedly non-triangular region in Vermont known for some creepy disappearances, with likely ties to the Big Bad Wolf and some lethal hugs. Never leave your children unattended while your pigs are unfed.

Jake then reads another overwritten account of a kooky occurrence in Florida, but this time it involves a carnivorous pink mist floating around and eating everything. Nobody knows what really happened back then, but everyone will happily follow that assertion with an explanation of exactly what happened back then.

Venture into the unknown, identify some unidentified bones (they’re human), and perhaps finally solve the show’s longest running mystery (What is That Fog?), all on today’s episode!

Episode 56 – Spaces, Strange: Space Is Strange Mar 09, 2019
    Show notes

Space! There’s an awful lot of it, and yet we practically never talk about it on this friggin’ show. But this episode aims to remedy that!

Did you know that you can get a degree in intergalactic politics? Incidentally, did you also know that you can go on long weekend retreats to one of Jupiter’s moons? And did you know that humans are descended from 12 or more different extraterrestrial races? Jake didn’t know any of that, but if you believe it, he’s got a xendra to sell you!

Wyatt then cranks up the excitement by talking about a really neat rock. It’s great, this rock. ’S from a couple years ago. We barely saw it at all, but it’s fast and small and OH SNAP IT MIGHT BE A SPACESHIP WHAAAAT.

Learn all about how to start your career as an exopolitician and how to tell different space debris apart while Jake takes the Lawd’s name in vain entirely too many times, all on today’s episode of Superduperstitious!

Episode 55 – sOfT kItTy, WaRm KiTtY Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise. If you go down to the woods today, you’ll hear from two nerdy guys — it’s another forest-centered episode of Superduperstitous!

Wyatt leads the way with some alarming encounters had by various survivalists in the great outdoors, and learns that Jake has terrible survival instincts. What would YOU do if your flashlight revealed the reflection of a pair of eyes in the darkness? Freeze in your tracks? Try to get closer? Poop?

Next, Jake recounts some currently ongoing terror in the taiga with one teenage Redditor’s tale of SOMETHING chasing her through the woods near her house. Tall, grey, humanoid, and accompanied by the sound of rattling chains, Glitter Sprinkles is not likely be her new best friend anytime soon. That said, if you absolutely have to get murdered by a monster, it’s best to at least keep the internet apprised.

Hear all this, plus an unexpected return from a hopping horror, some useful tangents about proverbs and idioms, and a listener-submitted story about an abomination near Maryland, all on this brand new episode!
