    Show notes

The sun will come out tomorrow? Well, tomorrow has finally come. It is officially today and we are ready to break into song and dance with guest Laurel Koepf-Taylor, assistant professor of Old Testament at Eden Theological Seminary, as we examine John Huston's 1982 movie, Annie. In this episode, Laurel leads us through discussions of children in scripture, child-labor laws, and the power of a little girl to interrupt capitalism. We also explore what Annie has to do with the lectionary week of Year C, Ordinary 16, July 17th. It's a hard knock life, people, but we've got Annie. So before you preach this Sunday, come and get a dose of optimism from your friends at Technicolor Jesus. Finally, Matt and Adam will be taking a short hiatus before returning with new guests and movies in September. If you have any suggestions send us an email at technicolorjesuspodcast@gmail.com. In honor of our nation's independence day, we got needs. Speed needs. Wait... that's not right, we have a need for speed? I think that's right. Today, we are pleased to welcome minister and writer Becca Messman to the podcast to school us in all things Top Gun. What does a move so quotable like Top Gun have to say about catechesis? How does our own ego get in the way of our work as Christians? In what way is the road to Jericho truly a highway to the Danger Zone. This week we explore what Top Gun has to do with the lectionary week of Year C, Ordinary 15, July 10. Becca leads us in a rousing discussion about why Top Gun is a helpful starting place for our ministry questions. So break out the volleyball, make up your own call sign (mine is Wombat), and get ready to have your breath taken away. It's time for Technicolor Jesus. This week we explore what The Babadook has to do with the lectionary week of Year C, Ordinary 14, July 3rd. Jessica leads us in a penetrating discussion about how Jennifer Kent's movie, The Babadook, prepares us to better understand our grief and our pastoral ministry. So dim the lights, hide beneath your blanket and prepare to meet your ghosts, it's time for Technicolor Jesus. In this episode, Adam and Matt discuss Akira Kurosawa's film Yojimbo in relationship with the lectionary texts for this coming Sunday, May 22, 2016: Trinity Sunday, Year C. What happens when one with no honor tries to do the honorable thing? What can one person do in a town hell bent on destruction? How can our stories be made new in different settings and cultures? This week Matt and Adam tackle the questions of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, Yojimbo. Adam again falls into the embrace of nihilism as Matt shudders and tells him that God has a plan. Matt then tries to make sense of the ways in which God subverts our narratives of redemptive violence. Later on, Matt professes his deep love for minor league baseball, and Adam talks about the curious evocative landscapes of Cy Twombley.
