Episode 203: Child and Survivor Advocacy (with Dale Margolin Cecka) Aug 31, 2025
    Show notes

If you’ve listened to this show for any length of time, and most likely even if you haven’t, you know the US legal system all too often fails domestic abuse survivors, especially women, children, and adolescents. My guest, Professor Dale Margolin Cecka, knows it all too well.
Professor Cecka is an advocate for women, children, and teens who have survived domestic abuse. Not only that, but she’s also a law professor, former Superior Court senior staff attorney, former Assistant Attorney General of Georgia, and the Director of Albany Law School’s Family Violence Litigation Clinic.
For this episode, I talked with Professor Cecka about her experience and expertise, and many related topics. I think you’ll enjoy this fascinating conversation as much as I did!

Episode 202: Dennis "Boo" Vaughan Jr. (Part 3) Aug 11, 2025
    Show notes

Over the last two episodes, I’ve told you the story of five-year-old Dennis Vaughan Jr., known affectionately as “Boo,” who died in his grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve, 2019. Boo’s mom, Danielle Vaughan, fought to regain custody of her five kids, all of whom were under the guardianship of Danielle’s mother, Sherry Conner. Despite dozens of reports to DCYF, all alleging that Sherry was abusing her grandkids, they weren’t removed from her care until after Boo died.
Now, you’ll hear my conversation with Danielle, who was candid, raw, and honest as she told me about the abuse and the trauma her kids endured in Sherry’s home. The details she shared had my jaw on the floor, and after you hear what Danielle has to say, I’m positive you’ll be as horrified as I am.
This is part three of the heartbreaking story of Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr.

Episode 201: Dennis "Boo" Vaughan Jr. (Part 2) Jul 26, 2025
    Show notes

Young mother Danielle Vaughan knew her children were being abused in the home of her mother, Sherry Connor. She spent years pleading for someone to intervene before it was too late. No one listened, and Danielle’s worst nightmare became reality when her five-year-old son, Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr., was pronounced dead on Christmas Eve, 2019.
Boo’s body told a story of severe and prolonged suffering, and an autopsy revealed that Boo had been savagely beaten, ultimately dying from blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Even though it was painfully obvious what had happened, nearly five years passed without anyone being held accountable.
This is the story of young siblings who were failed by the system at every turn, and whose mother’s cries for help went ignored.
This is part two of the heartbreaking story of Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr.

In 2016, toddler Dennis “Boo” Vaughan Jr. and his three siblings were removed from their parents’ custody due to concerns of substance abuse and domestic violence. They were ultimately placed in the Laconia, New Hampshire, home of their maternal grandmother, Sherry Connor. Their mother, Danielle Vaughan, had experienced her mother’s abuse firsthand and knew Sherry was mistreating and abusing her children.
Over the next two years, DCYF received at least 27 reports of child abuse and neglect against the Vaughan children. Despite these warnings from Danielle and several others, including mandatory reporters, DCYF continually overlooked the increasingly egregious and shocking ways Sherry treated her grandchildren. Only after Sherry accidentally sent Danielle audio of one abusive incident did DCYF act, and it was nowhere near enough.
This is part one of the heartbreaking story of Dennis “Boo” Vaughan, Jr.

Episode 199: Baby Lawrence Noxon (With Jim Overmyer) Jul 11, 2025
    Show notes

Lawrence Swift Noxon was born in March 1943. At five months old, he was diagnosed with what we now call Down syndrome. Three weeks later, on September 22, 1943, baby Lawrence died from electrocution under highly suspicious circumstances. His father, John Franklin Noxon Jr., was soon charged with murdering his infant son in what many considered a “mercy killing.”
For this episode, I spoke with author Jim Overmyer, who wrote The Electrocution of Baby Lawrence, the definitive story of Lawrence’s murder and the long, complicated legal proceedings that followed. This is the story of a baby boy who deserved to live a lot longer than he did, and a father who some at the time said wasn’t punished harshly enough for his son’s murder, while others believed that what John did was for the best.
This is the tragic story of baby Lawrence Noxon.

Episode 198: The Good Girl (with Morrene Hauser) Jun 22, 2025
    Show notes

My guest in this episode, Morrene Hauser, spent decades repressing traumatic memories from her childhood. When she finally cracked open that vault, her life all but fell apart. Morrene speaks with raw honesty about surviving a childhood marked by relentless abuse at the hands of her mother and stepfathers.
Morrene is driven by a fierce desire to help others by telling her painful but inspiring story. We talk about her upcoming memoir, The Good Girl, and how writing has become both a lifeline and a form of catharsis. Morrene also shares how horses played a powerful role in her healing. This conversation is about survival, reclaiming your own narrative, naming the wounds, and finding a way forward.
    This is Morrene Hauser’s story.

Episode 197: Quortney Kley Updates (with Gretta Morgan) Jun 01, 2025
    Show notes

Back in 2021, both episode 49 and minisode #3 featured the story of 20-month-old Quortney Kley. On February 25, 1997, Quortney was sexually abused and murdered by her mom’s boyfriend, Cayce Williams. It took nine years for the legal case to end with Williams accepting a plea agreement in 2006, and he was released in 2021 after spending only 24 years behind bars for the violent sexual assault and murder of a toddler.
In this episode, you’ll hear my recent conversation with Quortney’s mom, Gretta Morgan, who has some disturbing updates for us about Quortney’s killer and some shocking revelations about Illinois’ sex offender registry. Quortney’s case is already overwhelming in its injustice, but today’s episode will boggle your mind.

On August 24, 2020, 23-year-old Luis Luna ran into the living room of his shared Houston apartment in a panic, holding his unresponsive 8-month-old daughter, Savayah Mason. Despite an immediate 911 call, Savayah didn’t make it. An autopsy found horrific injuries, and Savayah’s death was ruled a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries with suffocation and sexual assault. A week later, her father was arrested and charged with capital murder.
This is the story of an adorable baby girl whose short life ended in the most brutal way possible. It’s also the story of a young father whose possibly drug-fueled impulses led him to commit an unthinkable crime against his own helpless infant daughter.
This is the disturbing story of Savayah Mason.

Episode 194: Dakota Levi Stevens (Part 2) Apr 30, 2025
    Show notes

In the last episode, I told you the story of ten-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens, a smart, creative, charming kid who was dealt a bad hand in life and died at the hands of a foster mother and longtime family friend. Jennifer Wilson is now serving a regrettably short sentence in the Indiana prison system for crushing 91-pound Levi to death with her 341-pound body weight.
In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with three of the people who loved Levi the most: Grandma Melissa Mahler; Aunt Ana Parrish; and Uncle Alex Parrish. Levi’s maternal family members told me about their family's constant attempts to rescue Levi from the foster care system; their heartache at Levi’s bright light being snuffed out by someone they thought they could trust; and their efforts to make changes to help other kids like Levi.
This is part two of the heart-wrenching story of Dakota Levi Stevens.
