#223 How to Use Cognitive Dominance to Out-Think Fear with Neurosurgeon Mark McLaughlin Nov 18, 2019

    How to outthink fear.

Mark McLaughlin, M.D. is a neurosurgeon and the founder of Princeton Brain and Spine Care. The first time he cut open a patient's skull, he found himself confronting a powerful force that his fellow brain surgeons agreed was best never spoken of.
FEAR. But Dr. McLaughlin knew that if he couldn't find a way to cope with fear, all he had striven for as a physician would be lost. So, with a scientist’s analytical precision and philosopher’s worldview, McLaughlin derived and formalized a method by which he could act rationally and confidently under the operating room's lights and in other areas of his life, while under fear's profound influence.

A former NCAA Division I wrestler, McLaughlin was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016. His commentary regularly appears in Business Insider and other national media outlets.

    About Your Host Jim Harshaw

My name is Jim Harshaw. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re in the right place because you can get there from here.

    And I can help.

    Who I Am

I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them.

I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires.

Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

    I’ve been lucky.

I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have.

    I will show you how.

    Why You Are Here

You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track.

You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow.

Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far.

    Breaking “procrastination by perfectionism.”

There’s something you want to do but you’re not ready. The timing isn’t right. You don’t have the skills. The “thing” isn’t yet perfect.

Here’s the problem. Deep down, you know it never will be. You’ve been caught in the loop of procrastination by perfectionism. You don’t do it because it’s not perfect and because it’s not perfect you don’t do it. The cycle leaves you in a perpetual state of feeling that one day you will make it happen but right now isn’t the right timing. Your fear of being embarrassed, losing, failing and hearing that little voice inside you say, “I told you that you should have waited.”

In this episode I address procrastination by perfectionism and give you concrete frameworks for breaking the procrastination by perfectionism cycle so that you can unleash your true potential.

#218 Dissecting Elite Performance: How and Why to Focus on the Process Over the Outcome Oct 13, 2019

    How and Why?

We all want to win. Maybe you want the championship, the new house, the car, the job, the business, the status, or the happiness. There’s something “out there” off in the future that you want. But why is it that some people seem to not only get the thing but they’re also content throughout the journey? What is it about people who focus on the process over the outcome that allows them to be successful and happy regardless of the failures, adversity, and setbacks along the way?

In this episode, I dissect the mindset and tactics of elite performers who seem to shrug off the burdens of pressure, perform at an elite level and focus on the process over outcome. And, as always, I give you tactics on how to do the same in your life.

    The breakthrough.

I’ve had a dream… a desire… a goal. I’ve always dreamed about the day I would again become an entrepreneur-- helping people. Serving people. Serving the world in a way that God designed me to do.

I’d been an entrepreneur before. I’ve experienced both success and failure. But here I am again. Quitting my job. Again. Going all in. This time, things are different. There’s more on the line. I have four kids and two mortgages. There’s also more on the line if I DON’T make the commitment.

There’s something in your life too that you’ve not committed to. While you may not need to quit your job, there’s something. Something you want that is just out of reach. And you’re afraid to take the leap. In this episode, I share how I shortened the leap to a long stride. And how you can too.
