Nick Heyward on Haircut 100, Solo Success and Finding a New Home in Florida Dec 09, 2018
    Show notes

Few artists from the early MTV era combined sophistication, melody and emotional warmth quite like Nick Heyward. First rising to fame as the frontman of Haircut 100, Heyward helped define a stylish and energetic corner of early 1980s pop music before launching a solo career that revealed an even deeper and more reflective artistic voice. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy sits down with Nick for a wide-ranging conversation about music, creativity and life decades after the explosion of new wave and MTV.

During the interview, Nick reflects on the rise of Haircut 100 and the whirlwind success of songs like Love Plus One and Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl). Spearsy and Nick discuss the excitement of the early 1980s British pop scene, when colorful fashion, adventurous production and catchy songwriting collided with the rise of MTV to create an entirely new kind of global stardom.

The conversation also explores Nick’s solo career and how his songwriting evolved over the years into something more introspective and personal while still retaining the melodic richness fans loved from the beginning. Along the way, Nick reflects on the artists and influences that shaped his musical identity and why he continues feeling creatively inspired decades into his career.

Spearsy and Nick also discuss his newer life in Florida and the experience of building a creative life far removed from the chaotic music-business environment of early ’80s London. The interview becomes especially thoughtful as Nick reflects on aging, artistic longevity and the desire to continue making meaningful music rather than simply reliving the past.

If you love new wave, sophisticated pop songwriting, MTV nostalgia and thoughtful conversations with artists who continue evolving creatively long after their first success, this episode belongs in your playlist.

The Stuck in the ’80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes, exclusive livestream hangouts, behind-the-scenes content and merch for longtime listeners.

And don’t forget: Spearsy and Brad will once again be part of The 80s Cruise, the ultimate floating celebration of ’80s music and nostalgia. Use promo code STUCK when booking your cabin to receive up to $250 in onboard cabin credit while sailing with fellow Gen X fans and enjoying performances and appearances from many of the decade’s biggest artists.

    485: Turkeys of the '80s | Movie Busts | Music Flubs | Product Snafus Nov 17, 2018
    Show notes

Jen with One N, B-Rad and Spearsy had to reach a compromise on this week's Thanksgiving-themed podcast: We decided to honor both the biggest "turkeys" of the '80s - movies, songs and more that were huge busts - but also agreed to hand holds and say what we were thankful for. (Spearsy was thankful that part of the show only lasted 5 minutes.)

    484: Two More Great Albums Turning 30 | Albums from 1988 Nov 10, 2018
    Show notes

Oh yes, 1988 seemed like the dark ages for some music fans in our beloved decade. The magic of the early '80s was gone, and FM waves had been invaded by hair metal and teen pop queens. But there were some albums still worth discovering, including Tracy Chapman's self-titled album and a really fun (if not also dark) disc by Siouxsie and the Banshees. This week we again honor the year 1988.
