Lori Majewski on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Women in Music and ’80s Pop Culture Oct 20, 2019
    Show notes

Few music journalists have explored the heart of 1980s music culture as deeply as Lori Majewski. As co-author of Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists and Songs That Defined the 1980s and a longtime SiriusXM host, Lori has spent years chronicling the artists, songs and movements that helped shape the MTV generation. This week on the Stuck in the ’80s Podcast, Spearsy and Brad sit down with Lori for a lively conversation about music history, Hall of Fame controversies and the lasting influence of women artists during the 1980s.

During the episode, the gang dives into the latest nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and debates which artists truly deserve recognition for shaping modern music and pop culture. Spearsy, Brad and Lori discuss the long-standing tension between critical acclaim and mainstream popularity, especially when it comes to artists from the MTV and new-wave eras.

The conversation also explores the groundbreaking role women played in shaping 1980s music and visual culture. From trailblazing artists like Madonna and Pat Benatar to influential new-wave performers and behind-the-scenes creatives, Lori reflects on how female artists transformed the music industry during the decade and continue influencing generations today.

Along the way, the discussion naturally expands into broader ’80s nostalgia, music journalism and the emotional connection fans still feel with the songs and artists of the MTV era. Like many great Stuck in the ’80s episodes, the conversation balances humor, deep fandom and thoughtful reflection on why the culture of the 1980s still matters so much decades later.

If you love new wave, music history, MTV nostalgia and smart conversations about the artists who shaped the soundtrack of Gen X life, this episode belongs in your playlist.

The Stuck in the ’80s Podcast has spent nearly 20 years celebrating the music, movies, television and pop culture of the greatest decade ever. Support the show on Patreon for bonus episodes, exclusive livestream hangouts, behind-the-scenes content and merch for longtime listeners.

And don’t forget: Spearsy and Brad will once again be part of The 80s Cruise, the ultimate floating celebration of ’80s music and nostalgia. 524: No. 2 Songs from 1979 | Village People | Donna Summer Oct 13, 2019
    Show notes

Oh, we're so close to the actual '80s, we can almost taste it. Well, you definitely can't hear it because the hit songs from 1979 bear little resemblance to the songs we'd love in our decade. This episode, we honor the songs from 1979 that went to No. 2 on the charts but no further. There are some real gems by Village People, Donna Summer, and more.

Remembering Ric Ocasek and the Music of The Cars Oct 08, 2019
    Show notes

If you were trying to design a band perfectly suited for the transition from the ’70s into the ’80s, you might end up with The Cars.

Rock guitars. New Wave synthesizers. Impossibly catchy songs. And standing at the center of it all was Ric Ocasek.

In this special Stuck in the ’80s memorial episode, we remember Ric Ocasek, who died in 2019 at age 75, and celebrate the music he created as the principal songwriter and one of the unmistakable voices of The Cars.

Ric Ocasek and The Cars Enter the ’80s

The Cars were already stars before our favorite decade arrived. Their 1978 debut gave us “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “Good Times Roll.”

But the band proved to be just as comfortable in the ’80s.

Albums including Panorama and Shake It Up kept The Cars on rock radio, with the latter producing the title track and “Since You’re Gone.”

    Then came 1984’s Heartbeat City.

“You Might Think,” “Magic” and MTV

If The Cars were built for ’80s radio, they were equally well suited for MTV.

“You Might Think” became one of the era’s most memorable videos, with Ocasek appearing as everything from a fly to King Kong while pursuing model Susan Gallagher. The clip won the first-ever Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1984.

Heartbeat City also produced “Magic,” “Hello Again,” “Drive” and the title track.

And while bassist Benjamin Orr sang lead on “Drive,” Ocasek wrote the song — another reminder of how central his songwriting was to The Cars’ identity.

    More Than The Cars

Ocasek’s influence extended well beyond his own band.

He released solo albums and became a respected record producer, working with artists including Weezer, Bad Brains and Guided by Voices.

His production work helped connect the New Wave era he helped define with generations of alternative-rock bands that followed.

In other words, even when you weren't listening to The Cars, there was a decent chance you were listening to a band influenced by them.

In this Ric Ocasek memorial episode, we look back on his life, his songs and the wonderfully strange presence that made him unlike any other rock star of his era.

Tall. Skinny. Sunglasses seemingly attached permanently to his face.

And responsible for a ridiculous number of great songs.

Ric Ocasek was exactly what we needed.
