Voting: making absentee voting harder, preventing 24-hour voting in Harris County, demanding driver licenses for mail-in votes, etc.
School Curricula: Laws creating an "1836 Project," outlaw discussing current events and systemic racism, and prohibit credit for civic engagement.

The conclusion: Texas is trying to go back to the 1850s (the Antebellum period) and be the vanguard of the New Antebellum period (the time before the 2nd civil war).

They conclude by discussing Kevin McCarthy's and Marjorie Taylor Greene's threats against telecom companies regarding handing over records related to 1/6.

White Christian Supremacy vs. Multi-Racial Democracy Aug 30, 2021

Dr. Liliana Mason is faculty at Johns Hopkins University and author of Uncivil Agreement: How Politics Became Our Identity.

In a new article, Activating Animus: The Uniquely Social Roots of Trump Support, she and her co-authors show that "Trump’s support is thus uniquely tied to animus toward minority groups."

She provides key takeaways fro this study:

"First, the people who really like Trump in 2018 are the same ones who really disliked Blacks, Muslims, LGBT+, and Hispanics in 2011. It's NOT THE SAME for the GOP in general, or even for Ryan or McConnell. Trump is drawing on this particular group of people to a unique degree.The new MAGA/anti-MAGA conflict is not an entirely partisan one. It's about white Christian supremacy versus a fully multi-racial democracy. And it's not happening for anyone on the Democratic side. Hating Christians and White people doesn't predict favorability toward any Democratic figures or the Democratic Party. So it isn't "anti-White racism" (whatever that means) motivating the left. It's not "both sides." This means that there is a faction in American politics that has moved from party to party, can be recruited from either party, and responds especially well to hatred of marginalized groups. They're not just Republicans or Democrats, they're a third faction that targets parties.

They then discuss Madison Cawthorn's suggestion that masks for children = abuse. This is rich in a country where kids practice active shooter drills regularly.

They also discuss Tucker Carlson's framing of Ashil Babbitt as an unarmed protester who was executed.

The episode finishes with criticism of Joe Biden's American Empire discourse and Christian nationalism.

Ex-Evangelical Apologetics: Christianity and Capitalism Aug 25, 2021

Brad discusses the idea that capitalism and Christianity go together from two angles. First, he outlines how in the mid-twentieth century big business actors infiltrated church spaces with the ideas that free market capitalism, individualism, and libertarianism were God ordained from the Bible. Like abortion in the 1970s, the idea that capitalism and Christianity are natural partners is the result of an external operation that used faith to gain cultural traction.

Brad then discusses the case of Denmark, one of the happiest countries on earth. Its social welfare system is extensive--and largely a result of Lutheran ideals inherited from the Reformation. It's a counter-example to the idea that Christianity is incompatible with socialism or any system other than capitalism.

Dartmouth professor and pre-eminent scholar of Evangelicalism Dr. Randall Balmer returns to talk about his new book, Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right. He and Brad discuss how over the course of the 20th century, race and xenophobia have been the drivers of Evangelical theology and politics. Balmer explains how Evangelicals once invested in social reform, but over the last century have undergone a transformation at the hands of conservative political operatives and fear of ethnic and racial others.

They then discuss the dangers and implications of the alliance between anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers with the Proud Boys and how cultural melding leads to strange--and in this case, scary--bedfellows.

This leads to a reflection on the Christian nationalism of the Capitol Bomber. He blames immigrants for his family's ills. He spout conspiracies. He says he is acting for God and Country. He repeats lies about the election. He was radicalized.

The episode finishes with reflection on the dynamic between blue cities and red state governments and what this portends for the future of the country.
