Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Super Bowl Preview + Professional sports bettor Preston Johnson Feb 10, 2023
    Show notes

On today’s episode, Jason opens the show by previewing the upcoming Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. This is one of those games where the betting leans for both sides have becoming more and more obvious as the days go on. Two weeks ago, we all tried to project certain scenarios and injuries as a way to gain an edge on the rest of the betting public. Now? Things are pretty cut and dry. There doesn’t seem to be much of an edge anywhere for anyone. Later, Professional sports bettor Preston Johnson swings by to discuss why he believes the Eagles defense is being overrated a bit, why it’s so important to shop around for the best price – especially when you’re trying to bet props, why some bettors prefer to bet player props that go against their overall lean on the game itself and much more! Finally, J-Mac closes the show by sharing his Best Bets for the Super Bowl.

Kevin Durant Doesn't Make the Suns the Favorites, What's Next for the Nets & the Lakers are Still a Sinking Ship Feb 09, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) hit us with an instant reaction podcast to the blockbuster trade that saw the Brooklyn Nets send Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns for Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson and a boatload of first round picks. The guys agree the move instantly puts the Suns back into NBA championship contention, but disagree on whether or not it makes Phoenix the favorites in the Western Conference. Devin Booker - like Durant - will be coming off a serious injury and Chris Paul has been looking rather washed recently. On the flip side, after trading away both KD and Kyrie Irving in less than a week, it's hard to figure out what the Nets' plan is moving forward. They have a glut of forwards and a treasure trove of draft picks, but no real franchise cornerstone players to build around. Something tells us Brooklyn will continue to be active on the trade market in the hours leading up to the trade deadline. Finally, J-Mac and Rob G close the show by sharing their thoughts on the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to trade Russell Westbrook for D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. This move makes the Lakers better but not so much where you'd consider them to be legitimate contenders in the West... even less so now that KD is in Phoenix. By trading Westbrook the Lakers essentially just rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic.

**Apologies for the audio quality on today's podcast. The Kevin Durant trade broke in the wee hours of the morning so the guys were unable to record using their normal microphone setup**

LeBron Makes History in Another Lakers Loss + FS1 NBA analyst Ric Bucher Feb 08, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets the party started by sharing his thoughts on LeBron James officially becoming the NBA's all-time scoring leader. LeBron has been McIntyre's GOAT for years and this record-setting performance only cements the fact. The only problem, however, is that LeBron's milestone moment came in yet another loss against a team they have to leapfrog just to make the NBA playoffs. It's getting harder and harder to truly appreciate what James is doing when the team is this bad. As far as the record goes, it's highly unlikely that anyone will ever break it again, so at least they've got that going for them. Later, FS1 NBA analyst Ric Bucher swings by to discuss how Kyrie Irving might fit alongside Luka Doncic in Dallas, why the Toronto Raptors seem to be holding all the cards right now heading into the NBA Trade Deadline, whether or not the Golden State Warriors should consider trading away some of their young assets in a last-ditch effort to keep their championship hopes alive, if we can expect an All-Star level player like Zach LaVine or Pascal Siakam to be moved in the next 24 hours and much more!

Super Bowl Prop Bets, the Dangerous Dallas Mavericks & Debating LeBron's Leadership Style Feb 07, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets Super Week started by revealing a few of his favorite Super Bowl prop bets. You don't have to fire on the Philadelphia Eagles or Kansas City Chiefs this early in the week if you don't love a side; it's totally acceptable to nibble on a few props. Not only are they fun to bet on but you can make a decent amount of money in the process. Then, J-Mac share a quick thought on the Dallas Mavericks' impressive victory over the Utah Jazz. Luka Doncic is still down with injury and Kyrie Irving hasn't joined the squad just yet, but the 'other' guys put on quite a show. If Kyrie can stay on the straight and narrow, Dallas can be very dangerous moving forward. Later, Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) swings by live from Radio Row in Phoenix to debate our fearless leader on LeBron James' leadership style in the wake of the failed Kyrie Irving trade. LeBron spent all weekend posting passive aggressive tweets and then doubled-down on Monday admitting that he was 'disappointed' the deal never got made... only to add :30 later that he thinks this current Los Angeles Lakers team can win an NBA championship as constructed. Wait, what?! One of the guys says he's disappointed that LeBron won't be honest about how he really feels while the other argues that LeBron is doing the best he can to keep locker room morale high in the event they're all stuck together after the deadline. This one got spicy!

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - All About Kyrie: Mavs Playing with Fire, Lakers Dodged a Bullet & a Murky Future in Brooklyn Feb 06, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason brings you wall-to-wall coverage of the blockbuster trade that saw the Brooklyn Nets send mercurial point guard Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. There are 3 prongs to this story: the Mavs side, the Nets side and the Los Angeles Lakers side. For Dallas, putting Kyrie alongside Luka Doncic is bound to cause fireworks... we just don't know what kind. On the court, the pair should be dynamite offensively and entirely capable of making a run to the NBA Finals. Off the court, however, it's more likely than not that Kyrie will do or say something that causes this whole thing to blow up in their faces. Irving has been a headache for years and has self-sabotaged his way out of three different franchises already. For Brooklyn, all eyes now shift towards Kevin Durant. We can assume that KD was consulted by the Nets front office before they ultimately decided to pull the trigger. However, once Durant realizes that this team is several notches below the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, are we sure he won't demand a trade of his own again? This is definitely something to monitor as the trade deadline approaches later this week. For the Lakers, even though they failed to land the third star that LeBron James so desperately wanted, at least they dodged the bullet that is Kyrie. If Los Angeles is going to mortgage their future on another superstar then it should be on someone who is more reliable than Irving (hello, Zach LaVine!).

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Joe Mixon On the Bubble in Cincinnati, Everybody Hates the Grizzlies & the Lakers Should Trade for Zach LaVine Feb 03, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets things started by sharing his thoughts on Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon being sought by police for pulling a gun on a woman. The Bengals showed in the AFC Championship game that they're ready to phase Mixon out of their offense if needed so it's definitely possible that this incident could lead to them cutting ties from him altogether. Later, J-Mac goes off on the Memphis Grizzlies after Dillon Brooks got ejected for hitting Donovan Mitchell in the crotch during their latest loss. Memphis is quickly becoming the most unlikeable team in the NBA. Brooks is a nuisance and the team talks more trash than anyone in the League. The only problem? They've never actually won anything to justify it. Finally, our fearless leader closes the show by discussing why the first thing he looks for in potential trades is whether or not a guy is a winning player. Alex Caruso? Winning player. James Wiseman? Not so much. Zach LaVine? The jury is still out. However, if you can get LaVine to the Los Angeles Lakers where he would be the third option behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis as opposed to the first option he's been for the last few years, you can expect most of his warts to disappear. We've seen good things happen when good-but-not-great players drop down the pecking order (CJ McCollum and Jrue Holiday); there's no reason to think LaVine can't be the next guy.

Tom Brady Has Retired (Again) + Sirius XM NBA Radio host Mitch Lawrence Feb 02, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets the party started by sharing his thoughts on Tom Brady's second retirement from the NFL and how it impacts the rest of the League. With Brady out of the picture, the price for guys like Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo has suddenly shot through the roof. Lamar Jackson is unlikely to become available and Aaron Rodgers could retire in 2024 himself so we're likely to see a handful of teams try to overpay for any above-average signal caller who may hit the market. Later, longtime NBA writer and Sirius XM NBA Radio host Mitch Lawrence swings by to discuss the general lack of lack of talent around Luka Doncic on this current Dallas Mavericks roster, why he believes the Phoenix Suns' championship window is already closed, whether or not the Memphis Grizzlies are legitimate NBA championship contenders, the NBA's Load Management epidemic, which all-time greats belong on the proverbial Mount Rushmore of the NBA, how LeBron James stacks up against LeBron James in the GOAT conversation and much more!

A Special Seahawks Haircut, Sean Payton is a Home Run Hire for Denver & Why You Can't Count Out the Lakers Feb 01, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets the party started by quickly discussing that infamous Seattle Seahawks haircut we saw him sporting Tuesday morning on The Herd. It seemed like a good bet before the season that the Seahawks would be one of the worst teams in the NFL, but thanks in large part to former New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, Seattle surprised a lot of people and ultimately caused our fearless to go viral. Later, J-Mac dives deep into the Denver Broncos decision to name Sean Payton as their next head coach. The price was steep but Payton still looks like a home run hire for Denver; If anyone can fix whatever ailed Russell Wilson last season, it's Payton. People forget that before last season Denver was projected to be a double-digit win team because their roster was so loaded with talent. With Payton running the show, the Broncos should absolutely be a playoff team in 2023. Finally, Jason closes the show with a few thoughts on the Los Angeles Lakers' overtime victory over the New York Knicks. LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura looked pretty formidable along the front line, but more importantly, the Lakers showed that they have enough talent up and down the roster to make a deep playoff run. Don't let the sub-.500 record fool you!

The 49ers Should Stay the Course, Keep Aaron Rodgers Away from The Jets & What Kellen More Can Learn From J-Mac Jan 31, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason gets things started by hitting us with a deep dive into Brock Purdy and the UCL injury that is expected to sideline him for at least 6 months. While some are using the injury as an excuse to float Tom Brady to the San Francisco 49ers as a potential free agent, J-Mac argues that the Niners should stay the course and let Purdy and Trey Lance battle it out for the starting gig. Why spend money on a stopgap signal caller like Tom Brady when you can fill out the rest of the roster with stars to help ease the burden on whichever quarterback is coming off of injury? Later, Jason explains once again why he's vehemently against the idea of his beloved New York Jets bringing in Aaron Rodgers to be their next starting quarterback. Not only is Rodgers aged and expensive but his ornery personality just doesn't seem like a good fit in a city like New York with a roster of young, impressionable stars. Finally, our fearless leader shares a personal story about his own rollercoaster ride from The Big Lead to FS1 to explain why Kellen Moore should view getting dumped by the Dallas Cowboys and eventually scooped up by the Los Angeles Chargers as a good thing. This is going to be a blessing in disguise that could ultimately lead to him getting that coveted head coaching gig in the near future.

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Refs Ruined Championship Weekend, Mahomes' Toughness on Full Display & the Eagles Cakewalk to the Super Bowl Jan 30, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason and Super Producer Rob G (Robert Guerra) bring you wall-to-wall reaction to the AFC and NFC Championship games. Unfortunately, bad officiating seemed to be the story of the weekend as the zebras absolutely botched several key plays in both games. Expect we'll see an officiating overhaul of some sort before next season. As far as the games themselves, Patrick Mahomes' toughness was on full display as he led to the Kansas City Chiefs to a win over the Cincinnati Bengals. What Mahomes was able to do on a bum ankle and down 3 of his best wide receivers is precisely why he's worth every penny of that $500 million contract. Not to be outdone, the Chiefs defense harassed Joe Burrow all night and came up with two huge turnovers to seal the win. The NFC Championship game, on the other hand, was a snoozefest as the San Francisco 49ers were forced to play their 4th string quarterback due to injury. So while the Philadelphia Eagles have been downright dominant during their postseason run, a case can be made that they've had the easiest path to the Super Bowl in NFL history. Later, the guys share their thoughts on a few other NFL stories that hit the newswire on Sunday. First, the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore wasn't great in Dallas but he definitely wasn't the biggest problem either. This one definitely feels like Mike McCarthy is trying to save his own skin. Finally, the guys close the show with a wild Kyler Murray conspiracy theory that is guaranteed to have you re-thinking everything you thought we knew about the Arizona Cardinals.
