Chet Holmgren's Impressive Debut, the Chances that KD Stays in Brooklyn & The Athletic Nets beat writer Alex Schiffer Jul 06, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by heaping major praise on Oklahoma City Thunder rookie big man Chet Holmgren following his Summer League debut. Holmgren looked as good as advertised, and he has to be the first sign of real optimism for Thunder fans since Kevin Durant left town back in 2016. Speaking of KD, with reports coming out now that the Brooklyn Nets are willing to wait things out on any potential Durant trade until they get the massive haul they're looking for, what are the chances that they run it back next season? If KD, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons are healthy and engaged, they have one of the best trios in the Eastern Conference. What's more, Brooklyn queitly boasts one of the deepest rosters in all of basketball when you factor in guys like Seth Curry, Joe Harris, Royce O'Neale and TJ Warren. Chances are this team ultimately gets broken up, but you have to admit it would be wild to see them run it back for one Last Dance. Later, The Athletic Nets beat writer Alex Schiffer swings by to discuss how difficulty it's going to be to put together a Durant trade that makes sense for all parties, Kyrie's general lack of team success since he left Cleveland, how the infamous Nets Big 3 would have fared if they actually stuck together, and much more!

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - The Lakers Can't Trade for Kyrie & What Really Motivates Kevin Durant Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

On today’s episode, Jason and Producer Rob G engage in a spirited debate about whether or not the addition of Kyrie Irving would be enough to vault the Los Angeles Lakers into title contention. On one hand, Kyrie’s career has been in a downward spiral ever since he left LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2017. On the other, is it fair to say that Kyrie, LeBron and Anthony Davis would easily form the talented trio in the NBA? Both guys make salient points here so we’ll let you be the judge to determine who had the winning argument. Plus, J-Mac reacts to the reports that Golden State Warriors are interested in bringing Kevin Durant back to The Bay now that he’s available for trade. As cool as it sounds that the Greatest Team in NBA history (KD, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green) might link up yet again, the fact remains that a reunion is nothing more than pipedream; There is no way Durant returns to Golden State, especially after they won the title without him. Finally, Jason closes the show by sharing the details of a private Instagram conversation he had with Durant in which the pair went back and forth over KD’s motivations moving forward. Get your popcorn ready!

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - T'Wolves are Going for It with Gobert, Why NBA Draft Picks are Overrated + Actor/Singer Leon Jul 04, 2022
    Show notes

On today’s special 4th of July episode, Jason kicks things off with a few thoughts on blockbuster trade that saw the Utah Jazz send big man Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Folks around the NBA insist that the Jazz 'won' the trade since they got 4 first round picks in the deal, but J-Mac argues that Minnesota deserves credit for pushing all in in hopes of cracking the top-4 of the Western Conference; the T'Wolves should be one of the top teams in the West during the regular season, and given the franchise's history of mediocrity, any type of postseason run should be viewed as a home run. Moreover, have you seen what the Jazz roster looks like these days? Gross. They're more likely to trade Donovan Mitchell and start tanking their way to the bottom than they are to make the playoffs next season. Later, actor/singer Leon swings by to discuss why some cast members on the set of the hoops classic ‘Above the Rim’ were jealous of his wardrobe, what it was like playing pickup with Michael Jordan back in college, how Kevin Durant’s trade demand out of Brooklyn could impact the rest of the NBA moving forward, why it was such a big mistake for Durant to leave the Golden State Warriors, how Jordan’s Bulls would have fared against the Durant-Steph Curry Warriors, and much more!

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Chaos in College Football, How Steph Curry Broke Kevin Durant & the Brooklyn Nets' Next Step Jul 01, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason open things up by sharing his thoughts on USC and UCLA bolting from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten conference. College football has been chaotic for years now (NIL, transfer portal, College Football Playoff expansion), but this could be the one that takes the cake. It's one of the rare instances where a clear money grab is actually good for the sport as a whole. Now, the only question is whether or not Notre Dame decides to join up too. Later, J-Mac does a deep dive into Kevin Durant's formal trade request from the Brooklyn Nets. It's clear that seeing Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors win another title without him broke KD's psyche, and now he's looking to latch one with a club that will give a chance to settle the score. Of course none of this would've ever happened had he not hitched his wagon to the mercurial Kyrie Irving, but I digress. The only problem with trading for Durant, however, is that he has a history of injuries and he's clearly in the twilight of his prime years. Jason tries to assemble trade packages that would make both KD and the Nets happy, but it's hard to make something happen that would satisfy all parties involved. Would the Phoenix Suns give up Devin Booker in a deal? Do the Miami Heat have enough to get something done? Would a young stud like Evan Mobley or Scottie Barnes become available? These negotiations could drag on well into the summer. Finally, Jason closes the show by discussing what's next for the Nets now that both KD and Kyrie appear to be on their way out the door. In fact, J-Mac has one radical plan that he thinks could keep Brooklyn afloat for the foreseeable future: build around Ben Simmons.

Hawks Have the Best Backcourt in the East, Draymond is Right About KD & NBA Free Agency Primer Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G kick things off by sharing their thoughts on Draymond Green's assertion that the Golden State Warriors never would have won their titles in 2017 and 2018 without Kevin Durant. As crazy as it sounds, Draymond is right! Those Cleveland Cavaliers led by LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were arguably the best team in NBA history not to win a championship. Later, J-Mac explains why he believes the Atlanta Hawks hit a home run with their acquisition of All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray. Trae Young and Murray are easily the top backcourt in the Eastern Conference, and should make the Hawks legitimate title contenders. Finally, the guys preview the start of NBA free agency by discussing which players might change teams over the next few days. Will Jalen Brunson be enough to make the New York Knicks relevant again? Might the Los Angeles Lakers be able to rehabilitate a Mo Bamba's career the same way they did for Malik Monk? Would the addition of PJ Tucker vault the Philadelphia 76ers to the top of the Eastern Conference? We have the answers to all those questions - and much more!

The Knicks' Love Affair with Jalen Brunson + Former NBA veteran Cuttino Mobley Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

On today’s episode, Jason gets the party started by sharing his thoughts on the New York Knicks’ relentless pursuit of free agent point guard Jalen Brunson. Brunson is a good but not great player so the fact that New York is so hell bent on acquiring him does give him a little bit of pause… unless there’s another big move coming after that. Could the Knicks open up even more cap space to add Zach LaVine as well? Could they turn all those extra first round picks they just acquired to make a run at Donovan Mitchell? The next few days should be spicy! Former NBA veteran Cuttino Mobley swings by to discuss why he believes Kyrie Irving is misunderstood, the constant leadership questions surrounding the Brooklyn Nets, why the Nets – and other teams around the league – are so hesitant to offer Kyrie a full max deal despite his prodigious talent, Ben Simmons headspace moving forward following a full season in limbo, how Steph Curry would’ve fared playing in the 1990s and 2000s, why he believes LeBron James is the GOAT, why the parity in today’s NBA is as good as it’s ever been, how analytics has hurt the NBA in some ways, and much more!

Kyrie Back to Brooklyn, the Clippers are Best in the NBA + BasketballNews.com Sr. NBA Draft analyst Matt Babcock Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on Kyrie Irving's decision to opt-in to his contract and return to the Brooklyn Nets for next season. The Nets front office played a game of chicken with Kyrie and won. We all knew that Irving didn't have much leverage coming in so it should come as no surprise then that he caved so quickly. The only question at this point then becomes whether or not Brooklyn will actually keep the mercurial point guard beyond the upcoming season. Later, J-Mac breaks down John Wall's decision to link up with the Los Angeles Clippers following his buy out from the Houston Rockets. The addition of Wall not only makes the Clippers the deepest team in Western Conference but arguably the best overall team in the NBA. Finally, BasketballNews.com Sr. NBA Draft analyst Matt Babcock swings by to discuss why he's so high on Detroit Pistons point guard Jaden Ivey and why he believes the Russell Westbrook comparisons are valid, why teams like the San Antonio Spurs might be willing to tank for Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson, and much more! (DISCLOSURE - The Babcock interview was recording before the Irving news broke so the first half the interview was deleted for clarity).

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - Deshaun Watson's Defense Strategy + Bleacher Report NBA writer Jake Fischer Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on the reports that NFL will push for a minimum one-year suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Some might say one-year seems appropriate given the seriousness of the allegations, but the NFLPA may have other plans. If the NFL went light on Daniel Snyder, Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones for their indiscretions, why should they able to drop the hammer on Watson? That argument alone could ensure that we see Watson on the field this upcoming season. Later, Bleacher Report NBA writer Jake Fischer swings by to discuss his viral exchange with Draymond Green during the NBA Finals, Damian Lillard's Instagram recruitment of Kevin Durant, the rumors swirling around a potential John Collins-Dejounte Murray swap, the odds that Jalen Brunson actually ends up with the New York Knicks, the likelihood that Kyrie Irving ends up replacing Russell Westbrook with the Los Angeles lakers, and much more!

Straight Fire w/ Jason McIntyre - More Kyrie Irving Drama & The Biggest Winners and Losers of the NBA Draft Jun 24, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G kick things off by weighing in on the reports that it's now expected that Kyrie Irving will be playing for a new team next season. It's clear at this point that Irving is using several members of the NBA media to push his agenda in an attempt to gain leverage over the Brooklyn Nets, and yet Jason and Rob are at odds about whether or not his plan will actually work. Would the Nets really kowtow to such a mercurial personality? Are the Los Angeles Lakers really that desperate to land another star player as LeBron James heads into the twilight of his NBA career? Expect both of those questions to be answered in the next few days. Later, the guys share their thoughts on the NBA Draft. The Orlando Magic shocked the world where they selected Paolo Banchero essentially sight-unseen with the first overall pick. Let's hope the risky move pays off for them. On the flip side, the Oklahoma City Thunder scored with Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams in the lottery, and the New York Knicks pulled off a trade that netted them three future first round picks (for someone like Donovan Mitchell) and opened up cap space this summer (for someone like Jalen Brunson). Both fanbases should feel pretty good about themselves this morning.

NBA Draft Preview: Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, Jaden Ivey & More! Jun 23, 2022
    Show notes

On today's episode, Jason brings you a full wall-to-wall preview of Thursday night's NBA Draft. During the conversation, J-Mac discusses the importance of projecting out what guys can become rather than just looking at what they are now, why he believes top-3 in-order will be Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero, why so much of Jaden Ivey's upside is tied to which team ultimately drafts him, how the addition of Jerami Grant will impact the Portland Trail Blazers' draft plans, what makes Shaedon Sharpe and Dyson Daniels so intriguing in the back half of the lottery, how Bradley Beal's free agency plans could force the Washington Wizards' hand, which guys should be viewed as high-upside sleepers near the end of the first round, and much more!
