Straight A Nursing: Study for nursing school exams & NCLEX

In this show, Maureen Osuna, MSN, RN (Nurse Mo) breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress.
While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX.
Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside.

#154: Why Immobility Is Your #1 Enemy May 20, 2021
    Show notes

A key concept you will start hearing about from almost the first day of nursing school is immobility. If your vision of being a nurse had to do with getting the sick people tucked in and snug in their beds, then you are in for a surprise. As great as it sounds to tuck our patients in and let them rest, it’s actually one of the worst things we can do.

Immobility is actually enemy #1 in nursing, and for so many reasons. After you listen to this episode, you’ll be getting everyone you can up and out of bed!

    #147: Let’s Talk SBAR in Nursing Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

If there’s one thing that gets nursing students and new nurses REALLY nervous (like voice shaking, sweat-on-the-forehead nervous), it’s calling the MD with a concern about your patient. You might be thinking, “What if I don’t know what to say?” or “What if they ask me a question I don't know the answer to?” or even “What if they yell at me, tell me to stop wasting their time, and hang up on me?”

Don’t worry, my friends! As usual, I have got your back :-) In this episode, we’ll be talking all about SBAR, a concise communication format used extensively in the clinical setting.

    • First, we’ll go over SBAR...what do all those letters represent?
    • I’ll give you my best tips for what to do BEFORE you use SBAR
    • And, we’ll see how it works in action with some SBAR scenarios

    #146: Low-Risk Labor and Delivery Mar 25, 2021
    Show notes

One of the first things you’ll learn in your OB class is what’s expected in a normal, uncomplicated, low-risk labor and delivery. Once you’ve got that down, it’s much easier to conceptualize the high-risk complex L&D issues (and yes, they do get complicated!)

    Today we’re talking about:

    • The signs an individual is in labor
    • Differentiating between true labor and false labor
    • Physiological changes during labor (both parent and baby)
    • The 6 Ps of labor
    • The stages of labor

SHOW UPDATE: Please note that since recording this podcast I have learned that not all pregnant individuals are women and that by using terms like "mom" or "mother" I have left many of you out of the conversation, and for that I apologize. I have realized I have a knowledge gap in this area and am actively seeking to learn more so my language can be inclusive to all pregnant individuals. If this episode left you feeling like I don't see you, I want you to know that I do value you and your experience very much. I am deeply grateful to those who kindly suggested I seek more understanding in this area. As healthcare professionals, we can make such a huge impact when we seek to understand our patients, value their unique experiences and get to know them for who they are...not who we assume them to be. Again, my apologies for making assumptions and I look forward to using more inclusive language in future episodes. Warmly, Nurse Mo.
