Winter Fun Feb 10, 2025

Romanticized Life Feb 03, 2025

Streetlights, Christmas Trees, & The Inn Dec 16, 2024

Our stories today have us deep into holiday excitement in the Village. Quiet Autumn Stories Nov 04, 2024

Spooky Season Oct 14, 2024

Outside in the Autumn Oct 07, 2024

The Big Day & At the Reception Sep 30, 2024

Something New, Borrowed, & Blue Sep 23, 2024

Our stories today pick up where we left last week, as we get closer and closer to a very special event in the Village. We’ll start with Something New, a story about a bicycle ride to a secret spot, a hand-drawn map with an X to mark the spot, and the joy of watching a friend fall in love. Then, in Something Borrowed, we’ll head down into the kitchens at the Inn as the wedding cake is made; we’ll talk about cinnamon and cardamom and a gift made with sugar and flour and love and care. Finally, in Something Blue, we’ll climb up the old treehouse ladder on the sycamore and remember how it all started, with a little orange kitten and paw prints in the snow.

Spectator Stories Sep 09, 2024

Our stories today highlight some lovely spectator experiences in the Village of Nothing Much. We’ll settle into the joy of stepping back and observing. The Beginning of a Love Story Aug 19, 2024

Our stories today are part of a larger arc that started with the most popular residents of the Village, Marmalade the Cat, and her little brother, Crumb the Dog. I’d set out to just tell the next part of their story but found a spark that would eventually lead to love. First comes Raining Cats and Dogs, where we can listen to the thunder, shuffle around the house in the dim stormy light, and contemplate plans for the day. Then we’ll hear Old Friends, a story about a day spent watching movies on the couch, a greyhound in a yellow rain slicker, and a fresh cup of coffee with a bit of sugar stirred in. Finally, we’ll follow the mail carrier through the neighborhood as he delivers special missives with LOVE stamps in RSVP.

Summer at the Inn Jul 29, 2024

Our stories today lean into the romance and sentimental feelings of the summer. We’ll start with In the Kitchen, During a Storm, as the wind picks up and the Pomodoro sauce simmers on the stove. A Summer Day in the Village, Three Ways Jun 24, 2024

Wind, Rain, & Hummingbirds Jun 10, 2024

Our stories today celebrate some of the joys of being outside in the changing weather of the summer. I wrote the first one, Wind and Wildflowers, a couple of years before the second two, which are meant to be heard together as a two-part series, but I realized they feel like they are happening at the same time and since many of our storylines cross over one another, I suggest we think of these two narrators as neighbors, each enjoying the heat and then the cooling air and rain from their porches. They might wave at each other when heading out to their mailboxes, if one has a bumper crop of summer squash, a basketful will appear at the other’s door. In winter, when the days are short, they take comfort from the lighted window of the other.

So let’s visit them, first in Wind and Wildflowers, we’ll hike the trail behind the house, listen for woodpeckers and watch the grasses sway in the wind. Then, in Rain and Shine, we’ll finish up some work in the garden, take a long hot shower, and eat dinner on the porch as the storm rolls in. Finally, in Hummingbird, after a good night’s sleep, we’ll step outside with a glass of iced coffee and meet the morning and any visitors coming to breakfast from the flowers.

Lilacs & the Strawberry Moon May 20, 2024

I should say, if you are new here, that all of our stories take place in the same universe, and sometimes you’ll recognize a narrator from a previous tale or see some overlap of storylines. Old Houses, Walks, & Gardens Apr 15, 2024

Our stories today highlight some of the loveliest simple pleasures of the spring. A walk, a road trip, a day in the garden. We’ll start with one of my all-time favorite stories and one that inspired me to write a whole book (coming soon!). It’s called Old Houses and if you’ve ever walked through a neighborhood and wondered about the stories of the houses you see, the people who have lived there, it is for you. Then we’ll load up the car and head out to The Hideaway for some time at the Cabin. Finally, we’ll gather our trowels and seed packets and pace out the garden in Spring at the Allotment.

Dog Walks & Donkey Treats Apr 08, 2024

We’ll start with Crumb Comes Home, and see how his first few month after being adopted went, spoiler alert: they went great! A Little Romance Feb 12, 2024

Our stories today all hold a seed of love and romance for the villagers of Nothing Much. We’ll start with our title story, on a walk downtown as the not-quite spring sunshine warms hearts and faces. We’ll find a photo hiding in the back of a wallet and initials carved into a bench that has a story to tell. Next, we’ll build up a bit of courage and travel to the flower shop downtown. We’ll pick our a bouquet and have it wrapped up with a satin ribbon in Hearts and Flowers. Last, we’ll reminisce about the potent message that can be sent by compiling the perfect musical message in Mix Tape.
